MEET SPECIFICS -The 2014 MW Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Fresno State, Oct. 31, at Woodward Park. The women s 6-kilometer race begins at 11 a.m. MT, followed by the men s 8-kilometer race at 11:45 a.m. MT. The course is 70% grass/dirt trails and 30% asphalt, while the forecast calls for sun and a high of 76 degrees. The Women s Award Ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. MT, followed by the s Award Ceremony at 1:15 p.m, where the conference will announce the All-Conference teams. Individual awards include s Coach of the Year, Women s Coach of the Year, Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year. The first-place finishers will receive Athlete of the Year honors, while the first-place true freshmen finishers will earn Freshman of the Year honors. SIZING UP THE COMPETITION - Boise State s women have been selected by the MW coaches to finish second at the championships, while the men were picked to place third, according to the MW Pre-Championship Coaches polls released Wednesday, Oct. 29. New Mexico comes in as the favorites to win both the men s and women s titles. On the men s side, the conference features three teams in the national polls: No. 18 New Mexico, No. 25 Colorado State and receiving votes Boise State. The women s side features two nationally-ranked squads: No. 10 New Mexico and No. 23 Boise State. RACING BRONCOS Reigning conference champion Emma Bates and Marisa Howard look to lead the Broncos. Bates captured the 2013 title in a course-record time of 20:48.15. Howard looks to improve upon her third-place finishes in 2012 and 2013 in her final cross country season. Also competing for the Bronco women this Friday are: Anne Brinegar, Charlotte Corless, Sarah Hastings, Anna Holdiman, Emma Hyyppä, Kelsi Lasota, Tessa Murray and Gracie Tostenson. Competing for the men on Friday include: Aaron Back, Jack Curran, David Elliott, Melika Ghali, Louis McAfee, Keegan McCormick, Dan Oekerman, Rhys Park, Andrew Rafla and Michael Vennard. The Bronco men bumped up one spot to third from the Midseason Coaches poll released Oct. 8, and the Bronco women remain second. The men were chosen to tie for third in the preseason conference rankings, and the women were picked to finish second. LAST CHAMPIONSHIP - The MW Championships will be the fourth for Boise State. New Mexico has claimed the men s and women s team titles in each of the previous three championships. Bates earned Boise State s first conference cross country title in six years in 2013 and nabbed Female Athlete of the Year honors. The Bronco women raced to a second-place finish with 60 points, while the men came in fourth place with 101 points. Bates set a course record at the Air Force Academy s Eisenhower Blue Golf Course (20:48.15). Bates and Marisa Howard earned All-MW First Team accolades with their top-seven finishes.
