46th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS ICES 2016 JULY 10-14TH HILTON VIENNA - VIENNA, AUSTRIA ICES 2016 EVENT PREVIEW REGISTRATION OPENS: 1 MARCH 2016
2 CHAIR S INVITATION This year s ICES is the key international conference for all professionals involved on topics related to humans living and working in extreme environments with applications inside or outside of terrestrial or outer space habitats or vehicles, human factors, environmental control and life-support systems, EVA system technology and thermal control systems. This pre-event booklet provides some preliminary information regarding the rich programme we foresee, with around 350 expected presentations in 40 technical sessions! There will also be plenty of time for networking with the welcome reception on Sunday, keynotes with distinguished speakers, the Poster Competition, daily lunch for participants, and the Awards Banquet on Wednesday evening followed by the world-famous dessert reception. We are proud to see the International Conference on Environmental Systems back in Europe this year and are very much inspired to host this unique event in the vibrant city of Vienna. Its artistic and intellectual legacy was shaped by residents including Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. The city is also known for its Imperial palaces, including Schönbrunn, the Habsburgs summer residence. In the Museums Quartier district, historic and contemporary buildings display works by Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and other artists. The ICES conference is managed and organized by the ICES Steering Committee. The Committee is a team of volunteers representing our five constituent committees which, themselves, rely on numerous volunteers taking an active part in organising technical sessions and events. Nothing would be possible without these volunteers and I want to acknowledge and express my gratitude for their contribution. Our special thanks also go to Cindy Smith of CS Event Planning, who has organized the event on a day-to-day basis with coordination with the Hilton Vienna. Along with Vice Chair Amy Ross, who is organizing this year s technical program, I also want to recognize our event sponsors who help make the conference an enjoyable experience. Thanks to UTC Aerospace Systems, Paragon Space Development Corporation, Thales Alenia Space, Airbus Defence and Space, OHB, and ILC Dover. IMPORTANT DATES 9 Student Poster Competition The ICES student poster competition is a program targeted to stimulate the participation of students and provide an excellent forum for students to present their work in an informal and interactive setting. Posters are ideal for presenting speculative or late-breaking results, or for giving an introduction to interesting, innovative work. Posters are intended to provide students and ICES participants with the ability to connect with one another and discuss the work presented. Each poster will be judged on the format of the poster, technical rigor, and the student s ability to convey the poster content to the judges through an oral presentation. University/college students are invited to submit abstracts on their proposed poster by Sunday, 1 May, 2016 per the abstract submittal procedures described below. The student s abstract and poster should be pertinent to ICES; that is, they should follow the same theme of the general conference, focusing on thermal topics and humans living and working in extreme hostile environments with applications inside or outside of terrestrial or outer space habitats or vehicles. Entries must include an abstract, poster title, author name(s), mailing and e-mail addresses of each author, work phone and cell numbers, and university or college. The first author and the presenting author of the poster must be students. The text of the abstract shall be no greater than 350 words and double spaced. Submittals shall be in MS Word or pdf formats. Adherence to this format is required. Abstracts that do not adhere to this format will be rejected. Poster abstracts should be emailed as an attachment to Grant Anderson by Sunday, 1 May, 2016. Authors will be notified of poster presentation acceptance NO LATER THAN Friday, 13 May, 2016. Each participating student will receive a ticket to Wednesday night s banquet. For questions on the student poster competition, please contact:
