Celebrating Motherhood Motherhood has been celebrated since ancient times when ancient Greeks paid homage to the Mother of Gods. The more modern way of honoring mothers began in England in the 1600 s when Mothering Sunday was observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This day is also known as Refreshment Sunday and is the only day when you are allowed to eat or do whatever you have given up for Lent. Not surprisingly, families came together and took the opportunity to celebrate with a big meal at which the mother of the family was treated as the guest of honor. In the United States, several attempts were made to introduce Mother s Day as a way to foster peace and heal the scars of the Civil War. Julia Ward, who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested the idea in 1872. Unfortunately, the idea didn t really take off until Anna Jarvis campaigned for the establishment of a Mother s Day to commemorate her own mother who died in 1905 and to honor the sacrifices mothers make for their children every day. After gaining financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner in May 1908, Jarvis organized the first official Mother s Day celebration. Her version of the day involved wearing a white carnation as a badge and visiting one s mother or attending church services. She then successfully campaigned for a formal holiday to honor all mothers and by 1911 most states had taken up the idea. This was followed by a declaration in 1914 from President Woodrow Wilson that Mother s Day should be celebrated as a national holiday on the second Sunday in May. The idea quickly spread to countries across the world. The commercialization of Mother s Day soon followed, much to the disgust of Anna Jarvis who was arrested at a Mother s Day festival for trying to stop women from selling flowers and profiting from the special day. Ironically Anna Jarvis campaigned for many years against the commercialization of Mother s Day, the day she had worked so hard to establish. Health Corner The sun emits harmful UV rays year-round and it is important to make protecting your skin part of your routine before heading outdoors. According to the National Cancer Institute, the deadliest form of skin cancer, Melanoma, is on the rise among boomers affecting men in particular and occurrences of skin cancer increased almost eight times between 1970 and 2009 among adults ages 40 to 60. If these stats aren t enough to convince you to slather on the sunscreen we hope these common myths will do the trick: I don t need sunscreen because I m going for a tanned look and don t burn easily. UV rays from the sun are responsible for premature aging of the skin, skin darkening, wrinkles, pigmentation and fine lines on your face and don t just tan the skin. Moreover, prolonged and unprotected exposure to sun rays damage your immune system and can make your skin increasingly susceptible to bruising. Sunscreens are for summer. UV rays are strongest in the summer. However, that is not reason enough to skip using sunscreen during the rest of the year. UVA and UVB rays of the sun affect your skin all through the year. Applying sunscreen in the morning is adequate for the entire day. Sun rays are the strongest from 10 AM to 4 PM. At this is the time your skin is at the highest risk for sun damage. Relying on the sunscreen that you applied in the morning is not sufficient. This is why you need to re-apply sunscreen every couple of hours throughout the day.

Jean Malamud Jean Malamud was born in San Diego, CA to parents Sydney and Zelma. Her father was a printer, and print shop owner, who created, among other things, business cards and wedding announcements. Her mother was a bookkeeper, who in fact had to pretend she was older in order to get the job! Jean s parents were also survivors of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fires that leveled the city. Jean has one sister, Ellen, who currently lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She recalls fondly that during the period in time of her high school education, she was lousy at sports, and it was unusual for women to become involved in them, but the athletic coach realized the potential they had, and offered gymnastic tumbling. Jean partook in this, and it eventually led to the formation of a school team! Although she has lived in Davis since 1993, Jean has traveled extensively, and lived in a wide variety of places, including Berkeley CA, Ithaca NY, Lausanne Switzerland, Feigères France, Tucson AZ, outside of Chicago IL, Irvine CA, Pullman WA, and Atlanta GA. During her freshman year at UC Berkeley, Jean was quite impressed by a physicist she met who had built a blinking-light circuit, and the two formed a relationship, which included rock climbing together, with trust given to Jean to be on belay (holding the rope, making sure he didn t fall!). The two married, and subsequently moved to Ithaca, New York, where he worked as a post-doc. Jean enrolled at Cornell University, and earned her Bachelor Degree in Zoology. His work and her education took them to various corners of the world, including their time spent in Switzerland and France. They had three children together Carl, Yvette, and Bruce. She also has two grandchildren, Becka, who lives in Oakland, and Nate, currently living in Oregon. In 1993, when Jean moved to Davis, she worked as a comparative physiologist at UC Davis, studying, evaluating, and experimenting with the mechanisms and physiology of animals, generally using non-vertebrates in her laboratory. She also has a keen interest and passion for insects, which continues today, and wants to remind us that all bugs are insects, but not all insects are bugs! Some of Jean s most passionate hobbies included rock climbing and camping, especially in the gorgeous Sierra Nevada Mountains and near Aspen, Colorado, in the Rocky Mountains. These treks also allowed her to focus her lens on another hobby, photography. Living within reach of an ocean for many years, Jean loves fresh sushi, and a slice of lemon meringue pie for dessert! Jean says three words that describe her best are small, yet determined! People have been very nice to me, and I try to return the favor.

Arthritis & Exercise 43 million Americans have arthritis and it can limit the ability to perform many activities, especially in seniors. The good news is exercise can help decrease joint pain, improve function and delay disability as a result of arthritis. Participating in programs like Live 2 Be Healthy can help manage and even decrease your risk of arthritis. Live 2 Be Healthy represents the definition of active aging, challenging the stereotypes associated with elder capabilities, and are enhancing the lives of seniors, families and communities through our adaptive programs. A person has an increased risk of arthritis based on the following factors: Age: Your risk increases as you age. Gender: Women are more likely to develop arthritis than men. Genetics: Having a close relative with rheumatoid arthritis increases the risk of developing the condition. Joint Damage: Joints that have been damaged through infection, injury or repetitive motion can develop arthritis. Obesity: More body weight can equal more joint pain and decreased joint function. If you have arthritis, the CDC recommends the following strategies to help you manage it to improve or maintain your quality of life: Be Active: Getting at least 30 minutes per day of exercise can decrease pain, improve function and delay disability. Watch Your Weight: Reducing weight may help to reduce pain and slow the progression of the disease. See Your Doctor: There are many different types of arthritis and your doctor can help you manage the type of arthritis you have. Protect Your Joints: Joint injury can lead to osteoarthritis. Live 2 Be Healthy programs are proven to improve balance, strength and mobility. But the more than that, our services offer seniors the freedom, independence and dignity that accompany reclaimed health. u www.live2bhealthy.com u
