This information is intended for those interested in becoming associate degree nurses through the CF program. We hope you find this information clear and helpful. At the end of this online program you will have an opportunity to give us input or ask questions about this session. Please let us know how we can improve the information to make it more beneficial to our future students! We provide a lot of information in this presentation. Some applicants find it helpful to complete one section at a time and take a break between sections. This makes the information easier to digest! The College of Central Florida (CF) is located at 3001 SW College Road, Ocala, FL 34474; the phone number is 352-873- 5800. (See campus map.) CF maintains an open door admission policy (this means that individuals who have a high school diploma or GED certificate will be admitted to the college) and consistently strives to provide programs beneficial to all students. The CF website includes information about the college, admission requirements, an application to the college, and information on financial aid opportunities. For general college admission questions go to the Enrollment Service Center, Bryant Student Union, Room 102. Students should explore financial aid options and apply for financial aid well before beginning the nursing program. The ADN program is a "limited access" program. Students must submit a separate application for Nursing. See subsequent section. In the U.S., Florida and this area there is a nursing shortage. CF's service district is Marion, Citrus, and Levy counties. Indistrict residents will be accepted into the ADN program first before any consideration can be given to out-of-district applicants. Falsification of residency information on the ADN application will result in withdrawal from the application pool. The ADN program is 72 credit hours and leads to an Associate in Science Degree in Nursing 1. The program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing and is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN, formerly NLNAC), 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, GA (866) 747-9965. In order to graduate and be eligible to apply for licensure by the Florida Board of Nursing, including taking the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), students must attain a grade of C or better in all courses, non-nursing and nursing, that are a part of the program. Note: in nursing courses (those with NUR prefix) a C grade is 75%. When referring to a GPA of 2.75 for nursing this GPA only includes general education courses specific to the nursing program and the courses with NUR prefix. 2 ADN PROGRAM OPTIONS Nursing education has three components 1. Theory instruction, this may be in-class or online. Academic credit for this is one 50-minute hour per week per credit. 2. Skills laboratory (lab) where students learn psychomotor hands-on skills and the decision-making surrounding these skills. 3. Clinical experience in extended care, acute care, and community agencies where students learn the wholistic practice of nursing. Academic credits for lab and clinical are three hours per week per one credit. Note that nursing courses require more in-class hours-per-week than most academic courses due to the 3:1 clock hour to credit ratio for lab and clinical. Generally in nursing classes, clinicals, and skill labs are offered over three to four days a week, with periodic testing on another day. Schedules vary each semester. As examples nursing course calendars (http://www.cf.edu/departments/instruction/health/adn/calendars.htm) are included on the website. The ADN program qualifies for Financial Aid. An individual student s award is based on credits per semester. We recommend that students look at the credit allocations for nursing by semester for full-time nursing (with and without the corequisite general education courses) and for the part-time option and consider the related financial aid allocations. Also, if full-time students choose the option to take Socialization into Nursing, I and/or Introduction to Pharmacology the semester before beginning Introduction to Nursing, they will need to consider the effect on aid allocations. To meet the needs of our students, CF offers a number of options for completing the ADN program: Full-Time Ocala Campus students may be admitted to the full-time option in both January (spring term) and August (fall term). The nursing courses are offered over four semesters (two years). There are no full time NUR- courses during summer semester. The nursing courses during each of the four semesters total 10 11 credit hours. Students may also take an additional co-requisite general education course (see next section Corequisite Courses for Full-time Program Option ). Students should plan for about 19 hours Monday through Friday in class, lab, clinical, and taking tests. Students should allow at least 20 hours a week for studying and clinical preparation. This is close to 40 hours a week for the nursing program! To be successful in the full-time option we recommend that students are not employed while in the program. Full-Time Citrus Campus students are admitted to the full-time option on the Citrus Campus in August (fall term) each year. This option is primarily for applicants who reside in Citrus County. Some clinical experiences occur in Ocala in Marion County. The courses, days and times are the same as noted in the full-time Ocala Campus option. To be successful in the full-time program we recommend that students are not employed while in the program. Part-Time Ocala Campus Students admitted to the part-time option take Pharmacology (2 credits) and Socialization into Nursing (1 credit) in the fall term and begin nursing clinical courses in January (spring term). (Note: Students beginning this option will complete the option at the same time as students beginning the spring full-time option). The option was designed to assist students by offering a lighter class load so students have some time to meet family and financial responsibilities. The option is limited to three days per week and 5 7 credit hours. Hours per week of class, lab, and clinical average from 11-15 (actual hours per week vary). Students should allow 15 18 hours per week for studying and clinical preparation. The option consists of seven consecutive semesters (including the fall semester of Pharmacology and Socialization). Students will also attend classes during two summer terms. While the academic load is lighter and the number of days per week is limited to three, the program is still intense and to successfully complete the program it is recommended that employment be limited to 15-20 hours per week after the January semester. To enhance successful completion of the first semester of clinical courses (January) we recommend that students are not employed. NOTE: Class and clinical hours may be between 7 am and 10 pm Monday Friday, and clinical hours may occur on Saturday. See ADN Curriculum for more details about the program options.

4 COREQUISITE COURSES FOR FULL-TIME PROGRAM OPTION Academic corequisite courses may be taken prior to admission to the nursing program. Students are urged to complete academic corequisites prior to program admission because of the intense nature of the nursing curriculum. However, some financial aid awards may be limited to students taking 12 credit hours per term. Students should check with the Financial Aid Office to determine what choice may be in an individual student s best interest. If a corequisite is not completed prior to entrance into the ADN program, it must be completed with a "C" or higher during the term indicated below to progress to the next level of nursing. If a student needs a general education class, it is the student s responsibility to register for the class. If student cannot get into the class needed, he/she will be unable to begin nursing or continue ADN classes. The nursing program is very rigorous! Students are strongly encouraged to complete general education courses BEFORE beginning the nursing courses. A student taking a corequisite course during the program must receive a grade of C or higher to advance sequentially in the program. Financial aid for the entire semester will not be awarded to ADN students during Introduction to Nursing. It will be awarded upon beginning Nursing I in the second eight weeks. 8 MINIMUM CRITERIA FOR ADN APPLICATION CF has an open door policy; however, the nursing program is limited access. This means you must apply separately to the ADN program. The college and ADN program applications are different. 1. College Application All applicants to the ADN program must submit the College of Central Florida application and be accepted to CF as a student in good standing. This process is totally online; see requirements at the following link: Starting and Succeeding at CF. Use major code 2137 to designate CF program of study (applicants with an AA or higher degree use major code 9250). CF students who have not been enrolled for more than one year must submit a college Readmission Application before enrollment in any courses can be done. There is no fee for a Readmission Application. Acceptance to the college does not guarantee acceptance to the nursing program. After applying to CF, the following are required for admission to the ADN program: 2. Information Session All applicants to the ADN program MUST complete this online information session prior to submitting an application to the program. Ideally, complete this information session before beginning academic prerequisite courses for the nursing program; review it periodically to keep abreast of any potential revisions. Upon completion of this online information session, follow the instruction to submit an email verifying completion. 3. Academic Requirements for ADN Application Submission Applicants must have a minimum 2.75 GPA for nursing general education courses and an all-college-level GPA must be 2.00 or higher. Prerequisite and Corequisite Course Requirements (a) All full-time program applicants, at the time of application, must have completed or be currently enrolled in at least 10 of the 21 nursing prerequisite credits the semester of application. By the first week of the next semester (summer semester if applying for August, and fall semester if applying for January) applicants must be enrolled in the remaining 11 credit hours of nursing prerequisite courses. Admission will be rescinded for those not enrolled. Full-time applicants who meet all other criteria, but who are currently enrolled in the last of the prerequisite courses will have their admission status verified after the end of the semester when the nursing office can verify passing grades and that the minimum 2.75 GPA has been maintained. A grade of less than a C received in any pre or corequisite course must be corrected with a C or higher and posted on the transcript before an applicant can qualify to apply or reapply to the program. Nursing program corequisite courses not completed at the time of entry into the program may be taken as shown above. Pre or corequisite courses may be completed at any CF Ocala, Citrus, or Levy campus, if offered. Clinical experiences are in Citrus, Marion, and Levy counties. Applicants currently enrolled in a pre or corequisite course at an institution other than CF must submit a copy of the fee bill (attached to the ADN application.) Applicants are responsible for requesting that up-todate transcripts be sent to CF when the course is completed. (b) All part-time program applicants, at the time of application, must have completed or be currently enrolled in at least 21 of the 30 nursing pre- and corequisite credits the semester of application. By the start of fall semester applicants must be enrolled in the remaining nine credits hours of nursing prerequisites. Admission will be rescinded for those not enrolled. For the fall term, students will also be enrolled (by nursing department) in Pharmacology (two credits) and Socialization into Nursing, I (one credit.) Note: A grade of less than "C" received in
9 any prerequisite courses must be corrected with a "C" or higher and posted on the transcript before an applicant can apply or reapply to the program. (c) Applicants for the January acceptance cycle checking the First Available option on the application must meet the course requirements for both the full-time and the part-time option and should indicate which option is their first choice. (d) Criteria for General Education Courses: The program will accept English, General Psychology and Humanities courses completed with a C or higher according to State of Florida guidelines (no limitation on when course was taken). The three sciences (Human Anatomy & Physiology I, Human Anatomy & Physiology II, and Microbiology), College Algebra or Statistics, Human Growth and Development, and Human Nutrition must be fewer than seven years old at the time of beginning Introduction to Nursing or by course sequencing (see below). For courses older than seven years applicants have a number of options. The following courses are prerequisites and an applicant may choose one of the options prior to beginning Introduction to Nursing. Sciences: choose to (1) retake the course(s); or (2) pass an appropriate exam administered by the Science Department. If the applicant chooses to take an exam, the applicant must make arrangements for the exam in the Science Department. (NOTE: For science courses retaken because of age limitation, grade received will be used for GPA calculation, but will not be used toward Points for Science Course Grades. ) College Algebra or Statistics: choose to (1) retake the course; (2) take the course not already taken; (3) pass the CLEP exam (College Algebra); or (4) Achieve at least 124 on the PERT Math section within one year prior to application date. (Note: If PERT Math section taken prior to 10/22/13, score of at least 113 is acceptable.) The following courses are corequisites and if not taken prior to beginning Introduction to Nursing, they must be taken as designated. Student must pass a retaken course with a C or higher OR meet minimum scores on an exam to retain a seat in the program. Human Nutrition: must be taken with Introduction to Nursing and Nursing I, applicant may choose to (1) retake the course; or (2) pass an exam administered by the Health Sciences Division. If the applicant chooses to take the exam, the applicant must make arrangements in the Health Sciences Division Office in Building 19, Room 111A. Human Growth & Development: must be taken before entering Nursing II; applicant may choose to (1) retake the course; or (2) pass the CLEP exam. Note: If choosing to retake a course, the applicant must see a Health Sciences advisor for registration.
10 5. Testing College Placement Testing All applicants to the nursing program must have achieved minimum scores in the Reading, Language, and Math sections on a CF college placement test. (See CF catalog for placement tests and scores and complete developmental classes) See http://www.cf.edu/catalog/index.htm Nursing Admission Testing ADN program applicants are required to take an admission test specifically designed to assess academic and personal readiness for higher education in health care. We strongly encourage students to study and prepare for this test to achieve the highest possible scores. Study guides are available in the LRC (Ocala and Citrus) or may be purchased. Various websites also offer study hints and tools. The admission test is the HESI Admission Assessment or HESI A2 (see http://evolve.elsevier.com/staticpages/i_reach_exams_assessment.html for more information). The test includes Math, Reading Comprehension, Grammar, and Vocabulary. To qualify for seating in the ADN program applicants must score a minimum of 80 percent on Math, Reading Comprehension and Grammar, and minimum of 74% on Vocabulary (NO EXCEPTIONS). Applicants who do not achieve minimum percent must remediate according to the table below. After required remediation, the applicant may retake the test (must retake the entire test). NOTE: Schedule the first HESI test to allow sufficient time for remediation and retesting before application deadline should this be required. The test isusually available on Wednesdays at 12:00 noon. Applicants must contact the Testing Center in Building 5, ext. 1564, to schedule a date to take the test. If desired test dates are full, ask to be scheduled as a stand by tester in case any of the scheduled testers do not show. For consideration for admission, applicants must attach a copy of the most recent test taken with test scores reflecting minimum percent or higher in the areas of Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary, and Math to the ADN application. Applicants are limited to taking the test twice per year. NO EXCEPTIONS. (The year begins with the date the first test is taken.) For validation purposes, the test must be taken at the CF Testing Center. No calculator may be used. When an applicant achieves minimum percent or higher on all required sections of HESI A2, the scores are valid from the date printed on the test results for the next two upcoming Admissions (January, August OR August, January.)
11 6. Applicant Residency The College of Central Florida s service district is Marion, Citrus and Levy counties. In-district residents will be accepted into the ADN program first before any consideration can be given to out-of-district applicants. Falsification of residency information on the ADN application will result in withdrawal from the applicant pool or program. EXCEPTION: Applicants living in a neighboring county, but having completed their general education at CF may petition the Admission Committee for an exception to the residency criterion. Submit a letter of petition with your application. 7. Academic Advisement After completing the online information session if you have further questions you may schedule an appointment with a Health Sciences advisor. All transcripts of previous courses must be on file in CF s Office of Admissions and Records and transcript evaluation should be completed by the Admission Office before making an appointment with the advisor. Applicants must meet with a Health Sciences academic advisor (by appointment only; call extension 1274) within 60 days prior to submitting program application to make sure applicant meets the academic requirements for the ADN program. 12 CRITERIA FOR POINTS TOWARD ADN ADMISSION Prior to awarding of points, Minimum Criteria for ADN Application [as explained in detail starting on page 8 in this information session] must be met. Points will be awarded based on the criteria listed below. A worksheet follows on page 16. Points for HESIA2 Scores For scores on HESIA2, 0.5 points will be added for each percentage point over 84% for each of the following sections: reading, grammar, vocabulary, and math. (Example: for a score of 90% on grammar 90% 84% = 6 points; therefore 6 X 0.5 = 3 points 86% on math 86% 84% = 2 points; therefore 2 X 0.5 = 1 point Total = 4 points for HESIA2. Documentation: Attach HESIA2 scores to application. We will verify with HESI, Inc. Possible points: Up to 8 points per test Total possible: 32 points Points for Science Course Grades For grades in required science courses, BSC2085 A&P I, BSC2086 A&P II, and MCB2010C Microbiology, for the first time taken: Grade Points A 9 B+ 6 B 3 Grades for courses completed at another college must be submitted to and accepted by CF and on the CF degree audit. If science class and lab are separate courses the two will be added and the average grade for both will be used. Points for Previous Qualified Applicants With No Program Space Available Any applicant who was qualified for admission, but was not admitted because space was not available, will receive 5 points. In order to receive the points, the applicant must reapply within two years of the original application. Maximum limit of 5 points. Documentation: Attach the letter from CF nursing advising that applicant is qualified, but no space is available. Save this letter; copies will NOT be available. 14 Total Possible: 5 pts Highest Total Points Possible 74 Applicants are encouraged to submit complete documentation for points. Applications must be complete with all attachments at the time of submission. Attachments will not be accepted after submission of the application. 15 APPLICATION SUBMISSION PERIODS In 2015, applications for the ADN program will be accepted in the Nursing Office, Ocala Campus Building 19 room 111, during the following periods: August 2015 Full-Time Ocala and Citrus programs: Apply from February 23 th at 8:00 am thru March 6 th at 4:30 pm. Applications will close at 4:30 pm March 6 th. Regular CF hours are Monday through Friday 8 am to 4:30 pm. January 2016 Full-Time and Part-Time Ocala programs Apply from May 25 th at 7:30 am June 10 th at 5:30 pm Applications will close at 5:30 pm on June 10 th. CF summer hours are 7:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday, closed on Friday. All applications submitted during these time periods will be given equal consideration. Date and time of application submission are NOT criteria for acceptance in the program. Selection of Candidates The selection process will be completed by an admission committee. Each application will be reviewed to ensure that the applicant meets minimum admission criteria and again to calculate points for admission. Applicants who meet minimum criteria will have points calculated and be placed in order by points (highest to lowest). Applicants with the most points will be selected for the class until the class is full. If there is a tie for the last place(s) in the class (two or more students with the same number of points) the applicant(s) will be selected based on the highest GPA for nursing. If applicants have the same GPA the candidate will be randomly selected. The next 12 applicants (by highest points) not selected for the class will remain on an alternate list. If any selected candidates withdraw from the original class the next applicant on the alternate list will be offered the seat. Applicants/alternates not admitted will need to reapply during next application period to be considered for future admission. Notification of Applicants Applicants will be notified by mail of acceptance status within six weeks of the close of applications. Notify the Health Science Office, Building 19, Room 111 of any change of address! Those accepted will be required to complete both an online orientation and face-to-face program orientation. Information about this and other program requirements will be communicated by mail.

17 ACTIVITIES UPON ACCEPTANCE INTO THE ADN PROGRAM THE FOLLOWING REQUIRED STEPS MUST BE TAKEN BY STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE A LETTER OF MATRICULATION INTO THE NURSING PROGRAM: 1. Return the form indicating whether you accept or decline admission to the program to the CF Nursing Office, Ocala Campus, Building 19, room 111, by the date specified in the acceptance letter. 2. Complete an ADN online orientation component. (This is not the orientation you attended when first admitted to the college.) Instructions will be included in the letter. This is required. 3. Attend a Nursing Orientation Meeting The admitted applicant will receive information regarding the date, time, and exact location of the meeting. This is required. 4. Complete a Criminal Background Check CF Health Sciences Division must initiate background checks on its students. This check should be conducted after receiving a conditional acceptance letter. The fingerprinting must be completed at CF and instructions for initiating the check will be included in the applicant's acceptance letter. The receipt given by CF after the fingerprinting is completed must be submitted to the nursing office no later than two weeks prior to classes beginning. Any person wishing to apply to the ADN program that has been arrested or convicted of any offense other than a minor traffic violation should refer to the Florida Statutes, Chapter 456 and Chapter 464 regarding licensure as a registered nurse. Individuals with a criminal history may not be eligible for admission to Health Sciences programs. If a negative indicator is shown, the student will receive written communication and will be given the opportunity to appeal the issues in the background check. The appeal will go before a committee that will determine eligibility for acceptance to the program. However, even if the appeal is granted, there is no guarantee that the Florida Board of Nursing will approve a student to sit for the NCLEX-TRN examination that allows an academically successful nursing student to be licensed as an RN. 5. Submit a Physical Examination Form, Immunization Records Form and Personal History Students must be physically and emotionally healthy to administer safe nursing care. Forms are available in Room 111, Building, 19. Physical examination forms are valid for ONE YEAR from the date of the health care provider's signature. Physical examination forms may be completed by an advanced registered nurse practitioner, physician's assistant or licensed physician (MD or DO). Note: certificates may not be signed by a chiropractic physician. Students enrolled in the first semester of the nursing program must submit all the forms by the designated time indicated in their letter (this includes immunizations and TB testing). Students enrolled in all other nursing courses must submit a new, completed physical examination form and a new immunizations and TB testing) prior to expiration of the current form on file. A completed physical examination form and negative TB immunization (within 1 year of clinicals) or clear chest X- Ray is required for attendance in all agency clinical sessions. Other immunizations or declination form must be on file in the nursing office. Students are responsible for submitting their forms annually so that they do not miss
18 clinical sessions. Any missed clinical session is considered a clinical absence.
19 REQUIREMENTS FOR HEALTH SCIENCES STUDENTS Participants in Health Sciences programs are required to: walk the equivalent of five miles per day withstand varied environmental conditions (heat, cold, moisture) grip, reach above shoulder level, bend at the knee, squat, stoop and crawl sit or stand for prolonged periods of time perform CPR lift a minimum of 50 lbs. (125 lbs. for EMS programs) manipulate small objects dexterously tolerate exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, detergents, body fluids, latex, and infectious materials distinguish colors see objects as small as 1mm hear subtle sounds (Korotkoff s sounds, heart sounds) communicate clearly and correctly in writing and verbally accept constructive criticism cope with a high level of stress concentrate, prioritize, and make fast decisions under pressure cope with anger, fear, hostility, or confrontation in a calm manner be flexible and self directed problem solve follow directions demonstrate a high degree of patience 6. Submit a Basic Life Support (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation [CPR]) Certification Students must have a current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers Certification. The program accepts only the American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider card, the American Red Cross Professional Rescuer (two-person rescue, adult, infant/child) or the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) CPR Pro card. The CPR course is available through the CF Institute (352-854-2322, ext. 1204), the Hitchcock Agency in Ocala (352-732-9955), and ABC CPR in Ocala (352-585-2211). Provide the Nursing Office with a copy of the certificate by the date specified in the acceptance letter. Certification must remain current throughout the program.. Note: Liability Insurance All nursing students are required to carry professional liability insurance. The insurance carrier is retained by the college. A payment will be included in a student s tuition and fees. This insurance is ONLY in effect for persons while in class or clinical as part of a CF Health Sciences program and does NOT cover any outside employment activities.
