National Centre for Injury Prevention and control division of Injury Response CDC Atlanta GA planned workshop on Bomb Blast Injuries Pattern & Care and they found Dubai best place for that as they were having travel restrictions for Pakistan. We took this opportunity to hold one & half day PTC before CDC team take over, for 20 Doctors from Pakistan and 8 Doctors from Afghanistan. Who Pakistan and WHO EMRO was involved and this course was partially funded by WHO. page 2 Unfortunately Afghan Doctors could not get the visa and they were not able to attend the workshop Contents and venue of the Course Course content was similar to what is advised in the PTC manual. The instructors used different styles of lecturing and different audiovisual aids like PowerPoint/ flip chart, interactive and group discussions. The venue was the OASIS lounge & bar, which was the only big hall in Arabian Park Hotel, basically a popular place to stay for western tourist. The lounge was closed for all others from 6am to 6 pm. It was a comfortable, colourful with fancy lights and camouflaged bar shelves, with air-conditioning facility, multimedia projector and sound system. The area was large enough to accommodate 50 or more people. Besides, we could make use of several spaces in the same hall for scenarios and group discussions. Working Lunch, tea and coffee was also served in the same area. It was a good change and well adapted to the situation. Practically we spent three days morning to evening in bar (drinking coffee-tea). In breaks just saw people relaxing and swimming in adjacent pool During and after the course The participants showed great enthusiasm and were very eager in the scenario and at skills. As participants were experienced and were dealing with trauma directly, they made the sessions very much interactive. All the participants appreciated the systemic approach and adoptability of the course. At the end of the course, certificates were distributed to all by Dr Douglas Wilkinson to the participants. WHO Pakistan representative Dr Khalif Bile assured of all possible support to the PTC team if and when required to train health professional with this trauma course at District level. After Lunch a visit / briefing was arranged for all the participants of the course for state of the art Emergency & Trauma Center of Rashid Hospital Dubai. BOMB BLAST INJURIES A session on Bomb Blast injuries pattern and care was taken by Dr Henry Falk Director coordinating center for Environmental Health and injury

prevention CDC Atlanta GA. After this session all went to Dubai Creek and took cruise for a fabulous dinner in a beautiful environment and cruise ride. Dr. Saeed Minhas Course Director & Chairman PTC SIND PTC on the BBC! PTC has been chosen by the BBC to present an appeal for funds on UK national radio. Our patron, Sir Terrence English, former president of the Royal College of Surgeons, will make the broadcast, which will go out on SEPTEMBER 27th at 8.55 on BBC radio 4 (repeated on Thursday October 1st at 15.27) From the time of the broadcast you will also be able to listen online (type bbc radio 4 appeal into Google). This is a unique opportunity for us to raise the funds we so desperately need for PTC activities worldwide. Please listen yourself, and pass the message on to all your friends and colleagues. You can give by post or via the website. A poster is attached for you to put up in your hospital, or give to your friends and possible donors - please add your own name and contact details for maximum impact. Dr. Mike Dobson

PRIMARY TRAUMA CARE PRIMARY TRAUMA CARE Listen to the BBC Radio 4 appeal which features Primary Trauma Care, to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on: Sunday September 27 th at 08.55 & 21.26 (repeated Thursday October 1 st at 15.27) You can also listen on the BBC website ( radio 4 appeal ) Every year 1,400,000 people die as a result of trauma; most of these deaths happen in the developing world. Our courses help health professionals make the best use of the resources they have, and do not depend on imported, expensive, and often-unreliable equipment. Our philosophy is to pass on our knowledge and skills to local people as quickly as possible. We train local people to become effective teachers so that our courses can rapidly become selfreplicating. As an example, four PTC instructors visited Iran in January and trained 30 people in PTC, and ten instructors. By August the same year our ten Iranian instructors had trained 300 more health workers in PTC, without further outside help. Our courses are of proven effectiveness and are endorsed by leading professional bodies such as the Royal Colleges of Surgeons and Anaesthetists, and by the World Health Organization which has endorsed PTC by publishing our manual as part of its surgical training materials (Surgical Care at the District Hospital). PTC is a registered charity (UK Charity No 1116071). In addition to working as unpaid volunteers overseas, all our trustees are themselves financial supporters of the work, and our medical and training teams undertake overseas assignments on a no-fee basis.
