Program Overview: Pirates Charities has offered the Action Math Baseball (formerly Fantasy Baseball Math) program to organizations in our region since 2011. This integrated math curriculum is used to teach math to students in grades four through eight, and is also adaptable for older students. It is used in both inschool and after-school settings. Action Math Baseball is aligned with Pennsylvania State Exams in the areas of mathematics, reading and physical education, and promotes higher order science, technology, engineering and math skills (STEM), in preparation for math-based careers. With the support of Pirates General Manager Neal Huntington and his wife Becca, Pirates Charities is pleased to offer the opportunity to apply for this program for the 2017 season to eligible nonprofit organizations and schools in the Pittsburgh region. If your organization is selected as a Action Math Baseball participant, Pirates Charities will provide the following benefits: Participation, free of charge, in a teacher training workshop for all teachers and supervisors involved in the program Action Math Baseball Classroom Kits, which include teacher and student manuals and all necessary program materials (enough for 36 students per kit) Pittsburgh Pirates branded player wheel cards Participation in the Pittsburgh Regional Action Math Baseball World Series, a tournament among local participating organizations Action Math Baseball teams that determines a regional champion The opportunity to benefit from Pirates incentives for students as available throughout the year Eligibility: In order to participate in the Pirates Charities Action Math Baseball program, organizations must meet the following requirements: Registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or public or private school within the Pittsburgh Pirates market area Non-profit or school must have been in operation for one full year prior to date of application Student population served should range from grades four to ten Each participating organization must elect a Program Coordinator to maintain data for his or her site s participating classrooms. Coordinator is required to serve as point of contact for the World Series in May Must have an adequate number of certified teachers or experts in the field of education/tutoring, to serve the number of students participating in the program Organization must submit a follow-up report no later than three months following the completion of the program, including anecdotal outcomes and final participation numbers by school, site and total number of student participants. Program timeline: January 7, 2017 Instructor training held at PNC Park February 2017 Instructors introduce curriculum and begin to teach students the Action Math Baseball program April 2017 May 2017 June 2017 Action Math Baseball Opening Day at all sites students begin to play against each other at sites Representatives from participating sites come to PNC Park to take part in the Pittsburgh Regional Action Math Baseball Playoffs and World Series Students participating in World Series will be invited to PNC Park to watch a Pirates game as guests of the Pirates.
