Commander, Cruiser- Destroyer Group FIVE, Commander, Destroyer Squadron SEVENTEEN, and carrier Air Wing FIFTEEN are embarked on board for the deployment. 28 Jun USS KITTY HAWK onloads ammunition - 185 pallets -from USS ROANOKE and USS FLINT. Ammo received included missiles, laser-guided bombs, 20mm' bullets, small arms ammunition and ordnance accessories. 11 Jul F-14A Tomcat from VF-51 strikes the flight deck ramp during a nighttime approach, breaks in two and explodes into a fireball. Pilot and Radar Intercept Officer safely eject, landing on the flight deck. The pilot, however, lands in the inferno. His life is saved, though, due to the quick reactions of the flight deck crew. The pilot suffered severe burns. 14 Jul USS KITTY HAWK commences PASSEX operations with Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (14-16 July). Four Japanese destroyers and a diesel submarine work with the Battle Group in an effort to enhance the interoperability of the U.S. Navy and JMSDF. 16 Jul USS KITTY HAWK visits Sasebo, Japan, 16-18 July, for the first port visit of the deployment. 19 Jul USS KITTY HAWK underway.

20 Jul USS KITTY HAWK participates in RAIDEX 94 20-23 July. The carrier embarked several hundred Marines with their CH-53 and AH-1W and UH-1N helicopters and was used as a launching platform for the exercise. RAIDEX was designed to demonstrate the capability of Marines on board carriers.
