The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012) apply to any activity which may involve the exposure of employees and/or others to asbestos. This includes manufacturing processes, work with materials containing asbestos (ACMs), asbestos removal, asbestos sampling, Laboratory analysis and Air Testing.

CAR Regulation 10 Information, Instruction and Training This regulation requires employers to make sure that anyone liable to disturb asbestos during their work, or who supervises such employees, receives the correct level of information, instruction and training to enable them to carry out their work safely and competently and without risk to themselves or others.

Competence 226 Any reference to competence, competent persons or competent employees in relation to working with asbestos is a reference to a person or employee who has received adequate information, instruction and training for the task being done and can demonstrate an adequate and up-to-date understanding of the work, required control measures and appropriate law. They must also have enough experience to apply this knowledge effectively.

Competence of those providing training 258 All training should be given by people who are competent to do so and who have personal practical experience and a theoretical knowledge of all relevant aspects of the work being carried out by the employer.

Duty to Manage - Appointed person The duty to manage requires the main dutyholder to make sure that competent persons: assess whether the premises are liable to contain asbestos and identify its location and condition (or, alternatively, assume asbestos is present and manage the premises accordingly); assess the risk from any located (or assumed) ACMs and to identify vulnerable or damaged ACMs and arrange for their repair and/or protection or, where necessary, arrange removal by somebody competent to do this.

What we do UKATA members are both large and small, commercial, industrial and other non-commercial training providers. The Associations objectives going forward are to continue to grow while servicing the diverse needs of its members and their aspirations for the future of asbestos training. Membership Asbestos Awareness Member means a member that delivers asbestos awareness training, but not any form of training for work with asbestos Non-Licensable Member means a member that delivers training for notifiable non-licensable work (NNLW) and non-licensable asbestos work and may also deliver asbestos awareness training, but not training for licensable work with asbestos Licensable Member means a member that delivers training for licensable work with asbestos and may also deliver training for non-licensable asbestos work and asbestos awareness training.

How UKATA ensures quality Materials - All UKATA member s training materials are verified at all category levels prior to audit. Trainers - Tutor criteria established to exceed the minimum standards required by the Approved Code of Practice (L143). Delivery and Facilities - Compulsory independent annual or biennial audit as part of the UKATA membership requirements. Asbestos Awareness Standards In the absence of a clear standard for the provision of Asbestos Awareness courses, UKATA developed a Cat A Course Syllabus back in early 2009 to set core outcomes that a candidate must be able to achieve: Outline the properties, risks and its effects on health of asbestos exposure: Have a general knowledge of the types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos and ACMs in buildings and plant How to avoid the risks from asbestos e.g. Demonstrate an awareness of how they would find information about the presence of asbestos before starting work; and Explain the general emergency arrangements to be used
