OCTOBER 21-24, 2018 Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown, Pittsburgh, PA #railvolution #rvpgh railvolution.org

October 21-24, 2018 PITTSBURGH Be Inclined to Join Us! A robust transportation system. A diversity of modes. An incredible talent for collaboration. A strong commitment to community and climate justice. A wave of new technology energizing a legacy city. Pittsburgh has a fascinating story to tell. While western cities were just beginning to embrace livability through transit, Pittsburgh was completing its 40-mile fixed-guideway network. Operated by the Port Authority of Allegheny County, the network boasts some of the earliest BRT and light rail systems in North America. Rail~Volution is the nation s preeminent livability and transit conference, attended by over 1,200 professionals who drive land use, transportation and community development decisions around the country. In this vibrant region of renewal, dozens of communities have rediscovered their waterfronts and built new economies, anchored by assets including world-class educational institutions, iconic architecture, and the internationally acclaimed Great Allegheny Passage, a multiple-use rail-trail system. Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh are canvasses of opportunity. Pittsburgh is at the epicenter of the autonomous vehicle revolution, setting the stage for livability in this new mobility frontier. Community-driven, civic partnerships continue to build TOD; preserve and adapt Pittsburgh s vast historic urban fabric for future generations; foster technological innovation; create one of the nation s most extensive trail networks and develop one of the densest, most transit-enabled downtowns in America. Mobility. Possibility. Livability. Explore how communities are leveraging transit investments buses, BRT and rail with bicycles, walking, sharing and other emerging options to connect people with employers and neighborhoods. Meet us in Pittsburgh and discover the future! Port Authority of Alleghany County

Rail~Volution 2018 in Pittsburgh The Rail~Volution conference brings together the best practices and most innovative approaches to livability from national, international and local perspectives. This year, the conference host community will bring their unique strengths and experience to define the local Pittsburgh story through 20 Mobile, the Opening Reception and a half-day regional session. Visit Pittsburgh Paul G Wiegman The Pittsburgh Local Host Committee is: Allegheny County Ann Ogoreuc Port Authority of Allegheny County Breen Masciotra City of Pittsburgh Justin Miller Allegheny Conference on Community Development Carly Dobbins-Bucklad Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group (PCRG) Chris Sandvig Things to explore in Pittsburgh Innovation and legacy infrastructure Connectivity at all scales Transit delivery in challenging topography (steps, inclines and bridges!) BRT perspectives over time Dedicated busways and optimized stops ALLEGHENY COUNTY ALWAYS INSPIRING Autonomous vehicles and new mobility testing Transit- and trail-oriented development Strong community development Fascinating, intact neighborhoods IT S TRUE! More than 55% of downtown Pittsburgh workers commute by modes other than driving alone. The region has low housing costs but high transportation costs, as a percentage of household income. 2 3 Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership

Port Authority of Alleghany County What is Rail~Volution? A movement. A resource. A network of people. A MOVEMENT Our roots are in transit, but our movement encompasses a wide range of livability, equity and emerging mobility issues. A NETWORK We work across fields, at the cutting edge of land use, housing, community development and transportation. Each year, more than 1,200 people from 300 communities come together to share ideas, breakthroughs, frustrations and inspiration. A RESOURCE The four days of the Rail~Volution conference provide a diversity of ideas and approaches that boost your capacity to collaborate, innovate, communicate and lead. The world is changing around us or because of us. But this remains true: We believe major transit investments are transformative, with the potential to make communities stronger economically, socially and environmentally. Our name is Rail~Volution, but our network supports communities as they integrate transportation in all forms including buses, rail, bicycles, walking, sharing and emerging options to connect people with employers and neighborhoods. Build your network, expand your skill set, think differently about your work. Check www.railvolution.org for complete conference and registration information. Also check out the Rail~Volution podcast, resources and news. 92% OF Going to Rail~Volution gave us networking opportunities and hands-on experiences with transit, etc. that we ll use to improve our own transit system and city as a whole. I was really energized by the creative approaches to TOD and financing. Examples and discussions of BRT will help with planning and design of three lines in my area. ATTENDEES SAY THE RAIL~VOLUTION CONFERENCE WAS EXCELLENT OR GOOD. Here s what else they say: I will adjust how I speak about issues to more clearly communicate the underlying issues. I loved all the information regarding partnerships across different sectors. I work in the community and gentrification is an important issue. The conference provided great information for addressing and learning more from other communities. 4 5

Open to Rail~Volution attendees and the general public. There has been a lot of buzz recently about changes in transportation in greater Pittsburgh. The downtown to Oakland BRT project is advancing; the autonomous vehicle industry is rapidly expanding; new multimodal connections and bike trails have received funding; and innovative technologies are being deployed to reduce congestion on our roadways. Meanwhile, we ve seen community leaders across the region seeking more mobility connections for their communities, and PennDOT, the Port Authority of Allegheny County, and the City of Pittsburgh all have new leadership focused on delivering new ideas and new partnerships. Our region is aspiring to something more, and we can feel the potential. Despite this progress, there is a growing sense of urgency to advance a vision for our transportation future. So what s holding us back? And what can we, collectively, do about it? Be part of what comes next. Join local and national thought leaders as we dive into what we as a region must do to capture the opportunities of new technologies, proactively coordinate our transit and multimodal assets, and pursue the funding needed to make investments that can help us be a competitive and attractive region for years to come.
