Its purpose is to provide a platform for the expression, development and theory of art, and study and research in the field, strengthening communication among different sensitivities, cultures and geographical origins, raising awareness of contemporary art and, at the same time, invigorating the surrounding area in partnership with the resident artist, thereby providing support for all those who love art. DESCRIPTION OF THE RESIDENCY The residency will last three months at the Casa Forestal (Forest Service Building) of Sant Martí d Empúries, a mediaeval town within the municipality of l Escala, located beside the sea in an incomparable setting. The accommodation and studio provide excellent facilities for the residency. The studio where the practical part

will take place is the Casa del Gavià (Herring House), located beside the sea and next to the beach of l Escala, and equipped with all the essentials and which, at the end of the residency, will be transformed into an exhibition space. WHO IT IS AIMED AT Any professional or practitioner of artistic creation with a well-established artistic career who can commit to continuous attendance throughout the residency can apply for the grant. The disciplines in which applicants can take part will be PAINTING, SCULPTURE and any other VISUAL ART. Artists can also apply in groups of up to three persons. Artists of any nationality can take part. DURATION It is a three-month residency in Sant Martí d Empúries (l Escala) from 1 April to 30 Jun 2017. At the end of the stay, each participant undertakes to exhibit the resulting work in order to present and share it with the general public. Without any obligation for the resident artist to attend, the work will be exhibited at first week of july at the Casa del Gavià in l Escala, the same location as the studio. CONDITIONS The theme of each participant s project can be freely chosen within the competition s terms and conditions and a single project can be proposed. SUPPORT FOR CREATION The grant winner is awarded financial support for creation totalling 2,000 (tax free). He or she will also be awarded a commemorative plaque. The second and third place candidates will be regarded as finalists. They will also receive a commemorative plaque for their participation. The return journey travel costs of people and materials will be covered by the participant(s). However, the Town Council will provide a van for material on the arrival and departure dates, which will make the journey from a particular address, railway station or airport to l Escala, provided the distance does not exceed 200 km. The winner may apply for other public or private aid. The Town Council will cover all the costs related with the use of the accommodation and studio. The second and third-place participants will receive recognition as finalists. GRANT AND SCHOOL The Town Council of l Escala intends to propose greater interaction between the grant winner and local schools. This involves using the three months of the artist s residency in the municipality to awaken the curiosity of the young, raising their awareness of the world of contemporary art and addressing fundamental issues of education, such as multiculturalism and the promotion of critical thought, two essential values of the twenty-first century. In this sense, the artist will be asked to make visits to schools throughout the period of research, make presentations of his or her work and work in three schools in the municipality. ACTIVITIES, COMMUNICATION AND PUBLICATION

Throughout the three months of the residency a program of activities will be established to relate the resident artist to the surrounding area and the people, and vice versa. The goal is to bring contemporary art research closer to the general public and bring about unlikely encounters for the artist. A meeting will be organized with the members of the competition jury and the press halfway through the residency, followed by an open day for the general public. The winning artist will benefit from a promotional campaign for the exhibitions on social networks and on the radio and television. The winner will sign a letter authorizing the publication of his or her work. DEADLINES The deadline for submitting candidatures is 28 February 2017. The application must be sent by e-mail to the Town Council of l Escala at: joventut@lescala.cat. The jury will meet on 18 March 2017. Submitted projects will NOT be accepted if they are received after the deadline, if they are not the artist s original work or if they do not comply with the terms and conditions. By applying for the grant the artist recognizes that he or she accepts and understands the terms and conditions of the competition. If a maximum of two projects are submitted, they must be sent separately. JURY AND VERDICT The jury will be made up professionals from the world of contemporary artistic creation and the world of culture. The jury will take into account the artist s professionalism, the clarity of the artistic project and the artist s desire to complete it. The jury reserves the right to declare the competition null and void if the proposals do not meet the standards of artistic professionalism and the project demanded.

ACCOMMODATION The Town Council will provide the resident with a flat of about 90 m² in size, located on the ground floor of the Casa Forestal of Empúries, beside the Gothic church and facing the sea. Description: two double bedrooms with sheets and blankets, a full bathroom, a kitchen and a living room with TV and Wi-Fi. Maintenance: basic fortnightly cleaning of the flat will be provided. However, it must also be kept tidy by the resident, who undertakes to leave it in the same state as he or she found it, under his or her full responsibility. The grant winner may be accompanied by his or her family unit (up to a maximum of try people).

STUDIOS The grant winner will be able to use two studios. The creative area is on the ground floor, separated and located right in front of the Casa Forestal of Empúries and the old Carolingian Castle. The Carolingian castle studio consists of a single space about 75 m² in size, with electricity and water. The studio has the basic material for artistic creation. The bursary winner undertakes to leave it in the same good condition. The studio for practical creation of the project will be located in the Casa del Gavià, facing the beach of l Escala. The ground floor will be used, consisting of three individual rooms, a bathroom, water and special lighting; a total of about 65 m²will be available for use. The studio contains all the elements required for artistic activity. The practical creation areas will be transformed into exhibition halls at the end of the residency. EXHIBITIONS The exhibitions will be held in the three separate rooms on the ground floor of the Casa del Gavià, transformed into exhibition halls with all the necessary elements, and will be open to the public at specific times..the resident artist will be able to recover the exhibited material at the end of the exhibitions. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION AND ACCESS L Escala, located in the heart of the Costa Brava and equidistant from Barcelona, Ceret and Collioure, lies very close to Figueres and Girona, where it is linked to European motorways, the rail/high speed train network and the airport. Situated beside the waters of the Mediterranean, the old Casa Forestal in the mediaeval town of Sant Martí d Empúries stands beside the Greco-Roman ruins of Empúries and the beaches of the Costa Brava. It is an ideal spot facing the sea, from where you can look out onto the whole Bay of Roses and understand why the landscapes of the Empordà and its coastline have always been sources of inspiration for artists from the past and present. On the beach of the town of l Escala stands the Casa del Gavià, a building raised in 1951 and perched on top of the coastal rocks, with stone walls in the shape of a boat. Here you will find a viewpoint looking out to sea in one of the finest settings in Catalonia.
