CME At a Glance Fall 2016 Volume 3, Issue 4 In This Issue Sharp HealthCare Approved for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) HRO at Sharp HealthCare What s New in CME: Welcome John and Adriana Physician Spotlight: Sharp Rees-Stealy Spine Case Conference Pharmacy Spotlight: Diabetes Conference in November Activity Spotlight: Emerging Trends in Hip Arthroscopy Advances and Controversies in Melanoma and Other Skin Cancers Kidney Transplant Conference: Advances in Transplantation for Community Nephrologist 2017 Cardiovascular Service Line Conference Access the CME Portal Sharp Approved for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Loretta Thompson & John Rodriquez We are pleased to announce that Sharp HealthCare has been approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Multi-Specialty Portfolio Approval Program as a Portfolio Sponsor. Sharp HealthCare physicians who are Board Certified by one of 21 of the 24 ABMS Member Boards participating in the Portfolio Program may now receive Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Improvement in Medical Practice (Part IV) credit for their engagement in quality improvement (QI) work. As a Portfolio Sponsor, Sharp HealthCare is granted authority to develop, monitor, and approve quality improvement projects for ABMS MOC Part IV credit. Sharp is the first health care delivery system in San Diego, and one of very few non-academic institutions in the nation to receive this recognition. Committed to supporting our physicians involvement in both QI activities and the ABMS MOC program, participation in the Portfolio program will allow our physicians to obtain MOC credit for participating in organizational QI and practice improvement activities part of Sharp HealthCare s overarching mission to transform the health care experience by improving patient care as well as the clinical and experiential outcomes for its three million patients and families located throughout San Diego County. The Sharp HealthCare Continuing Medical Education Department has oversight of the new program. says Loretta M. Thompson, MBA, CHCP, Director of Continuing Medical Education. We are proud to say that our Safe Surgical and Procedural Experiences and Reducing Hospital Acquired DVT/VTE initiatives have recently been completed and participants will soon receive MOC credit for their participation. The results of those projects have been outstanding to say the least. The DVT/VTE initiative implemented tools and procedures utilizing the EMR to be able to monitor use of VTE prophylaxis. There were also revisions made to the VTE prophylaxis guidelines with the intent to increase the use of appropriate pharmacologic VTE prophylaxis. The Safe Surgical and Procedural Experience project has decreased the number of wrong site person/procedural surgery to zero. The Sharp CME department would like to extend its sincerest gratitude to all those involved in launching, leading, and participating in Sharp HealthCare s MOC Approval Program. If you are interested in launching a MOC initiative or being part of

existing initiative, please feel free to visit our website, www.sharp.com/moc. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at (858) 499-4560 or email us at moc@sharp.com. HRO at Sharp HealthCare As part of Sharp HealthCare s commitment to high reliability, we have been training all our leaders on the skills that will help us move forward. Beginning in November, we will be offering classes to all our staff, physicians and board members as we continue our HRO commitment. The good news is we are going to be delivering training ourselves: we will be the teachers who are connecting with all of our colleagues within Sharp HealthCare. Training is recommended, not required for physicians, and involves a combination of on-line modules and an in-person workshop. If you are interested in completing the training, contact the following people at the hospital where you practice and they will give you more information: Sharp Coronado: Sharon Amero Sharp Chula Vista: Dolly de la Rosa-Kania Sharp Grossmont: Deborah McDonald Sharp Mary Birch: Stacy Robinson Sharp Memorial: Lorrie Brower Sharp Mesa Vista/McDonald Center: Melody White What s New in CME Welcome John Rodriquez and Adriana Rice Sharp HealthCare CME welcomes Jeonathan Rodriguez, BA, new CME Associate. Prior to coming to Sharp HealthCare, John was the coordination assistant at the College of Medicine at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) in Los Angeles. His duties included overseeing project management across all CDU CME sponsored programs, and participating in the CME Faulty Advisory Committee as an ex-officio member. In addition, he was a member of the CDU College of Medicine Faculty Executive Board where he provided assistance to all of the subsequent faculty subcommittees. John earned his BA in history from Whittier College, and is currently enrolled in USC s MPH program. During his free time, John follows his beloved Dodgers, although he did admit that the Padres might grow on me if they start winning. Please join us in welcoming John to Sharp. You can reach John at (858) 499-4069 or at Jeonathan.Rodriguez@sharp.com. Sharp HealthCare CME also welcomes Adriana Rice, BS, new CME Associate. Adriana got a little taste of CME by working in the CME Department via the Sharp employee pool earlier this year. Born in Bogota, Colombia, Adriana has been in the United States for almost 10 years. Settling in San Diego with her husband, she has been with Sharp via Sodexo at Sharp Memorial Hospital and Sharp Grossmont Hospital since 2007. She enjoys sampling the variety of food offered in California, as well as the many cultures that call the Golden State home. In addition, Adriana is tri-lingual Spanish, French, and English a huge plus in our ever changing world. Bienvenue Adriana! You can reach Adriana at (858) 499-4035, or at Adriana.riceolaya@sharp.com.

Pharmacy Spotlight: Diabetes Conference in November Sharp HealthCare s 2016 Diabetes Conference will be held on Friday, November 11, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The conference is designed for nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, clinical and managerial leaders and others interested in optimizing in-patient diabetes care. Conference highlights will include new and emerging treatment therapies for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, treatment strategies for managing special situations affecting glucose control, and recognizing barriers and developing solutions to glycemic control in the hospital setting. Physician Spotlight: Sharp Rees-Stealy Spine Case Conference If you d like additional information please contact Marisa Holley at (858) 499-3112 or marisa.holley@sharp.com. On the second Tuesday of each month, a group of orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, neurosurgeons, internal medicine, pain anesthesiologists, fellowship-trained sports medicine physicians, and pain medicine specialists gather for the Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group (SRS) Spine Case Conference. This lively group of physicians gathers to Mary DuQuette, MD review new and a few long-standing cases and discusses treatment options for each patient. The group is always mindful of what treatment will work for each specific patient, making recommendations on a case-by-case basis. The chair of this conference is Mary DuQuette, MD, a SRS Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician for than 20 years, and former medical director of the Sharp Memorial Hospital Pain Program. We discuss cases that may be surgical, said Dr. DuQuette, but we are happy to discuss pain management as there is a full array of specialty depth to share ideas. Any physician can present a case if they can tell us ahead of time, especially if the patient is contemplating surgery. Doing so gives the radiologist time to review the images. For more information on the SRS Spine Case Conference, please contact, Chris Mattson at (619) 740-4153 or chris.mattson@sharp.com.
