JULY NEWSLETTER Page 1

Commander s Corner Summer has begun, and with it, our 2017/2018 fiscal year. We accomplished a lot during our last year. Highlights included several awesome community involvement events, closer integration with Warriors Ascent and continuation of long-standing programs like our breakfast, Patriots Pen / Voice of Democracy and Buddy Poppy distribution. We experienced a net decrease in our membership, but the members we have today are more actively involved than in the past couple years. We had more volunteer hours than any year in the last three years in 2016/2017. In short, we did a lot well last year, and we have a chance to increase our community involvement during the upcoming campaign. Congratulations and thank you to Ron Thiewes and his committee for planning our Vietnam Commemoration on June 25. Your team envisioned and created an amazing event that recognizes the sacrifices of a generation of warriors who received the Welcome Home or gratitude that they earned. Thanks also to Rick Butler for serving as the emcee for the event and speaking on behalf of a grateful nation in honor of these men and women and their service. Rick also played a huge role in the success of our Independence Day efforts in collaboration with Jodi Kersten from the Auxiliary. Thanks also to John Bugg for the use of his trailer and garage this year in support of our parade operations. We gathered at the post at 8:00 and had the honor of following Mayor Nan Johnston in the #2 slot in the parade. Our contribution was a parade unto itself; our veterans, a really cool World War I Centennial display envisioned by Bob Eckerle, our recoilless rifle, and representatives from our youth organizations. Good stuff! On July 9, we will host the District 3 School of Instruction at our post at 1:00 pm. The event will include a joint VFW / Auxiliary meeting followed by the standard district meeting and the SoI. The Department of Missouri Junior Vice Commander, Lance Kellogg, will represent the department. Robert Kirtley was installed as the District 3 Commander at the State Convention in June and will also be present. All VFW Post 7356 members are welcome to attend this meeting and speak their mind in this forum. This is one of the opportunities we have to shape state and national level discussions. Late in July, VFW will host its national convention. Several amendments to our organization will be discussed and implemented, including a transition from paper to electronic record keeping, using the post, district and department websites as the official record of the organization and change in Paragraph 3 of our charter to reflect the care of the dependents of our comrades instead of their widows and orphans. This is another step to acknowledge that today s force better reflects the population we once defended and that many of those left behind are actually widowers. We will begin using the new text in our July meeting. Our next priority will be the execution of our Golf Tournament on August 21. This is the same day as the solar eclipse what a great place to see history! Among the goodies provided in the goody bag this year will be the special glasses that allow participants to look at the sun during the event. We need members to continue to bring in golfers, donated items for the auction / raffles and sponsorships. Use your networks! South Platte Memorial Post 7356 Auxiliary Auxiliary Members, First, I want to join our auxiliary members in thanking outgoing president, Cheryl Hainkel, for serving as Post 7356 Auxiliary President for the past four years. We appreciate her dedication and leadership while putting in countless hours for the auxiliary to reach many goals during her term of office. Cheryl will now serve as President of Missouri Department District 3 VFW Auxiliary. Our Post will host the District 3 meeting this upcoming Sunday, July 9 and 1 pm. There will be a School of Instruction where officers and those who have been appointed can learn all the job functions for all. If you're new or even if this isn't your first time, stop by! If anything you will learn what is happening in next year's membership program. You will be sure to come away with some great knowledge from our District leaders. Information will be given about MALTA and a new National Outreach Campaign. All members are welcome to attend. All Committee Chairs and Officers should attend. Auxiliary Awards will be given out at the meeting. It is a new year and a new term. I am honored to now be our auxiliary President. I joined in March and was installed as President at the April meeting; talk about fast tracking a new member. I do believe in stepping up where there is a need, so I was glad to volunteer for the office. I am pleased to serve alongside Senior Vice -president Mary Helbock, Junior Vice-president Jodi Kersten, Treasurer Judith Green, Secretary Lorie Green, Chaplain Rosemary Karp, Guard Mary Lou Wilkinson, and Conductor Randy Green. Trustees are Cheryl Hainkel, Linda Eckerle and Ricki Butler. Committee chairs are: Veterans and Family Support Cheryl Hainkel, Hospital Linda Eckerle, Membership Mary Helbock, Youth Activities Julianna Eckerle, Event Coordinator Jodi Kersten, Americanism Stephanie Skinner, Standing Rules Lori Green. Scholarship, Legislative and Historian remain to be filled. If you are interested in serving as chair for these three committees, please contact me at 816.550.1049. Anita Crowell, President Page 5

Auxiliary Information Auxiliary Dues are Now Payable for 2017-2018 Continuous members of the auxiliary may now remit their dues of $25 for the Auxiliary Year, 2017-2018. Dues may be submitted to Judith Green by cash, check or money order. A receipt will be given to you. You may also submit your dues electronically through the National VFW Auxiliary after July 1 st. This is a change this year. There is also a change in how membership cards are issued. They will now be sent by National VFW Auxiliary. This change allows you to request a replacement card online if you should misplace it. If you have questions about this process, please let Judith Green know. She may not have the answers right away, but will get them for you. She is waiting for her training to be scheduled on the new MALTA system. Child Care During Meetings! The Auxiliary wants all Veterans and Auxiliary Members with small children to know that we are offering child care during meetings. If you are interested in bringing your child, please email the Auxiliary at southplattevfwla@gmail.com. Please give your name, the first name of your child, age of your child, any special needs and a contact phone number.
