Federal Survivors Benefits and Allowances 36 The following benefits require an application which can be completed by us on behalf of the veteran s survivors. Honorable discharge is one qualification for the benefits listed below. The full qualifications for the benefits listed below are beyond the scope of this compendium. Some of the benefits listed below are available for a veteran s spouse and their dependents. As these benefits change from time to time, it is encouraged that you consult us for current availability. Burial benefits in a VA cemetery may include: 1. Free space for veteran and spouse 2. Free outer burial container for veteran and spouse 3. Free marker for veteran and spouse 4. Free opening and closing for veteran and spouse 5. Free perpetual care 6. Designated area for committal service Burial benefits in Venice Memorial Gardens may include: 1. Free space for veteran, discounted space for spouse 2. Free marker for veteran 3. Free perpetual care 4. Availability of presence and witness of graveside services Garden of Honor at Venice Memorial Gardens Many veterans have selected the serene beauty of Venice Memorial Gardens as their final resting place. Some of the reasons for this include: 1. Its convenient location is easier for family and friends to visit. 2. Freedom of choice in property selections as the veteran can be buried in the Garden of Honor or other areas. 3. Other family members can be buried near the veteran. 4. Flexibility in the choice of memorials. 5. Ability to apply the value of the free ground burial space, depending on availability, towards mausoleum crypts, cremation options or other property selections. 6. Flexible, custom graveside services. Military Funeral Honors Upon the family s request, Public Law 106-65 states that every eligible veteran may receive a military funeral honors ceremony, to include folding and presenting the United States burial flag and the playing of Taps. The law defines a military funeral honors detail as consisting of two or more uniformed military persons, with at least one being a member of the veteran s parent service of the armed forces. The program calls for funeral directors to request military funeral honors on behalf of the veteran s family. When military funeral honors at a national cemetery are desired, they are arranged prior to the committal service by the funeral home. These are available in a VA cemetery, private cemetery, funeral home, church or other place of service. Burial Flags A United States flag is provided, at no cost, to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran who served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces. It is furnished to honor the memory of a veteran s military service to their country. Presidential Memorial Certificate A Presidential Memorial Certificate is an embossed paper certificate, signed by the current president, to honor the memory of an honorably discharged deceased veteran. This program was initiated in March 1962 by President John F. Kennedy and has been continued by all subsequent presidents.
