The candidates appreciated being given the opportunity to introduce themselves and request our support. Connection Committee Coordinator: Dawn Dubose Randle Census 2010 Rally at Cuney Homes The Connection Committee will hold a Census Rally at Cuney Homes on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The rally will feature a speaker from the U. S. Census who will provide pertinent information about the upcoming census count. The Connection Committee will also provide refreshments and door prizes to encourage participation by the Cuney Homes residents. Sorors are asked to wear our new chapter (black) t-shirts or any AKA/pink & green attire. Connection Committee Coordinator: Nikita Harmon Census 2010 Essay Contest The Connection Committee is sponsoring an essay contest for local fifth grade students. Students have been asked to write an essay on the importance of the 2010 Census. The deadline for the essay contest has been extended to March 26, 2010. COMMITTEE MEETING REPORT Name of Committee: Health & Human Services Date: March 3, 2010 Chairman: Soror Camilla Jackson Time: 6:00 PM Co-Chairman: Soror Ardyth Guyer Place: Power Center Number of Committee Members Present: 17 Purpose of the Committee: To review current programs, introduce new ideas and formulate a plan of action to start organizing activities throughout the year that will fulfill all aspects of Platform V. Objective of the meeting: To review upcoming activities pertaining of health and human services. Recommendations: HAIR STYLE & HEALTH PROFILE This barbershop outreach event is scheduled for Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm at the 32 Degrees Barbershop which is located at 14800 Westheimer, Suite #1. Test to be offered include Diabetes screening, Blood pressure screening and body mass index. Soror Felicia will also provide Gold cards applications for the uninsured. The committee has developed a flyer for this event and members were encouraged to bring water and snacks. Soror Felicia Austin-Toliver is the coordinator of this event. AIDS WALK 2010- The walk is March 14, 2010 at Sam Houston Park (downtown). To register for team Alpha Kappa Omega, go to the AIDS Walk Houston 2010 website at http://www.aidswalkhouston.org and search for team Alpha Kappa Omega and click the Join to the right of the Company name (Alpha Kappa Alpha). Walkers should meet on the corner of Bagby & Lamar at 8:30 am. Soror Angela Price is the coordinator for this walk. MARCH OF DIMES March for Babies- This walk is April 25, 2010 at Roberson Stadium (UH Central Campus). To register for team Alpha Kappa Omega, go to the AIDS Walk Houston 2010 website at http://www.marchforbabies.org and search for team Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter, AKA Sorority, Inc. and click the Join to the right of the Company name (Alpha Kappa Alpha). We will have a table for walker sign-up in March and use the buckets for the April meeting. WE will not participate in the picnic since this is the same day as the fashion show. Soror Y. Nicole Montgomery is the coordinator for this walk. ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SOLIDARITY WALK- This walk is June 26, 2010 at Mac Gregor Park. We discussed looking at alternative sites because of the Al Edwards Juneteenth Tennis Classic also scheduled for that date. We will have problems parking. The walk will occur simultaneously around the world wherever there is a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha culminating with a symbolic walk at the 2010 Boule in St. Louis, MO. Soror Demetria Williams is the coordinator for this walk. ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC ALPHA KAPPA OMEGA CHAPTER HOUSTON, TEXAS COMMITTEE REPORT NAME OF COMMITTEE: First Responder Date: Feb. 13, 2010 CHAIR: Soror Beverly Marlin Time: 8:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. CO-CHAIRS: Soror Angela Wright; Soror Una Topps Place: Teen Enterprise Center NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 28 NUMBER OF SORORS PARTICIPATING: 17 PURPOSE OF COMMITTE: To fulfill the requirements of Platform 111, preparing young Black males to become first responders, certifying them in CPR/AED. The sorors and participants met on Sat. Feb 13, 2010 at the Teen Enterprise Center. After serving the participants, a continental breakfast of juice and doughnuts, class began, with Soror Angela Wright and Soror Beverly Marlin as instructors. Upon completion of the workshop, participants were given a written test on cardipulmonary resuscitation and the automated external defibrillator. Upon completing and passing the exams successfully, each participant was given their American Red Cross card and a certificate from the committee. There were 19 participants certified. Sorors assisted with registration, serving and providing breakfast and lunch, testing and checking papers and clean-up. The committee would like to thank the sorors, for your Extra Special Participation. It was a wonderful day of service by our sorors, and teen sponsors, Sharon Howard and Dena Gray. We have been invited to return for future projects with the young men enrolled in the program. Upon completion of the entire workshop, all participants enjoyed a short lunch of pizza and juice. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Walk 2010 Committee Report Name of the Committee: Walk 2010 Date: February 9, 2010 Chairperson: Soror Demetria Williams Time: 7:30 p.m. Number of Committee Members Present: 10 Place: The Power Center Purpose of the Committee: The committee shall plan the Alpha Kappa Alpha Solidarity Walk. The Solidarity Walk will occur simultaneously around the world on Saturday, June 26, 2010, wherever there is a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The Solidarity Walk for Central Daylight (CDT) is schedule for 10:00 a.m. We are walking for emotional, spiritual, & physical healing and wellness. Goal: To organize and assign members to the various committees for the Walk 2010. Each committee will consist of three members from the Alpha Kappa Omega chapter. Many of the members serve on their respective committees in the chapter (i.e.) health, membership, public relations and/or have a talent in that area. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Committee Meeting Report Name of Committee: Houston National Pan Hellenic Council Date: March 17, 2010 Chairperson: Soror Darlene D. Johnson The National Pan Hellenic Council - Houston Chapter is updating the history of the Houston chapter. The Council is requesting that each chapter that is a member of the Houston council to submit information on the history of their chapter with the National Pan Hellenic Council - Houston chapter. Anyone how has any pictures or information on the History of and the Houston council, please submit that information to Darlene D. Johnson. NPHC-Houston will be participating in the Houston Be Counted Exp on Saturday, March 27 which will be held at two locations (HEB @ Gulfgate Mall) and Plaza Americas (formerly Sharpstown Mall) from Noon 5 p.m. Several organizations will be present to help answer census questions. There will be 3 webinar training sessions on Thursday, March 11 at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 18 at 1 p.m. & Wednesday, March 24 at 1 p.m. Information will be posted on the NPHCH web site with the links. We would like 10 volunteers at each site. NPHC-H has asked to focus on the Gulfgate location at HEB. Please contact Frater Ferrel C. Objective of the meeting: To discuss and plan the Chapter Retreat Recommendations: Several dates and places were mentioned with the final decision TBA. Sorors will be reminded in the Jewel to contact their Heart to Heart Soror That before a Soror invites a visiting Soror to our meeting, to first check their membership status (i.e. when were they initiated and in what chapter). Mention also that some form of AKA identification, such as a membership card, their certificate, or an Ivy Leaf magazine addressed to them, as well as their Driver s License will be required in order to be admitted to the meeting. Rationale: has over 500 members and we must implement a method to assure that outsiders are not infiltrating our meetings. It was 50 years ago, that a handful of TSU students segregated the lunch counter of the Weingarten s grocery store. At a series of ceremonies nine of the pioneers, who led the sit in, were honored. The chapter completed a successful Undergraduate Activity Week for the students at Texas Southern University, entitled FM 1908. Each event was well attended and filled with platform inspired workshops that allow participants to work one on one with the members of the Gamma Psi Chapter. GRADUATE ADVISOR S Keeping Track Extra Special Purpose Hello Sorors, THE OG EXPRESS Omicron Gamma Chapter University of Houston Downtown Vol. 1 Issue 3 March 2010 The Omicron Gamma Chapter held its two (2) week 2010 Spring Membership Intake Process event that started on February 28th thru March 14th on the campus of University of Houston-Downtown and Sheraton Suites-Galleria. The ceremonial luncheon theme was Moving Forward...Through Pearlfection and a special thanks to Soror Gwendolyn Brinkley who delivered the keynote speech that was uplifting and inspirational. Sisterly thanks to Soror Tamara Cubit who delivered words of expressions to the 11initiated sorors at the luncheon. A very special thanks to extraordinary sorors of the Graduate Advisor s Council - Sorors Tamara Cubit, Nkenge Berry, Helen Houston, Edwina Johnson, Patricia Roberts, Margie Taylor, Yavaunda White and Angela Williams. A sisterly thanks to Sorors Lillian and Renee Bourgeois for adding value to the ceremonial luncheon. As a new Graduate Advisor, it was an honor to work with Soror Ashauna Lindo, MIP Chairman. She exemplifies the values and compassion of an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman.
