VFW Messenger Queensbury Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6196 and Auxiliary QVFWP6196.org Commander s Message Volume 23. Issue 4 October 2016 Gary Kaiser, Commander Bill McGarr, Editor Loyalty, Honor, Service Hello Sister and Brothers: Fall is here, leaves are starting to change and pumpkins are ripe for pies. I had the pleasure to set up a table at the Adirondack Balloon Festival in joint partnership with Dan Saville and the Queensbury Masonic Lodge 121. We passed out flyers for our Tents for Homeless Vets and had some donations for our Poppy s. I would like to send a Thank You to all their volunteers for helping us set up and the friendships we made. We hope to work again with them on future Veteran activities. ASAP.a suggestion was made to change the meeting time from 7pm to 6pm with the winter months approaching and darkness ascending earlier, please contact me or leave a message at the post if you like this suggestion and we can meet 1 hour earlier on Oct 17th. We have started to get fundraiser checks from It s Your Nickel for our Tent drive. Our Bingo players are also dropping off bottles. The Masonic Lodge 121 also set up a donation bottle for us over the weekend. PLEASE pass the word to friend and family so we can hopefully purchase more tents than we may need. This fundraiser is going until May 2017. An Emergency decision was made to make repairs and cover the parking lot after a few accidents by guests and members. The approximate cost will be $9,500. Thank you to Cherry Robinson for the fall flowers she planted out front. Our 50th Anniversary has been set for February 25th, it s not too early to send in your RSVP. This will help in purchasing food and setting up. Thank you. As always if you have free time help on Bingo Tuesday is always welcome. Please check your older neighbors and fellow homebound vets with these colder nights and winter preparations. If you need help please let us know. God Bless our Troops Commander Gary Kaiser

Page 2 VFW MESSENGER Auxiliary President s Message Anchored to Serve Our Veterans And Their Families Hello Everyone, ****IMPORTANT**** Meeting time has changed to 6PM on the Third Monday of the Month starting October 17, 2016. This past month was a busy month. We are up to 93% in membership almost to my goal of 100% by October 31!!! So if you haven't paid your dues yet, please do! Remember to be eligible for the Auxiliary, members must be citizens of the United States or a United States National, and at least 16 years old. Those eligible are: Husband/Wife, Widower/Widow, Father/Mother, Grandfathers/Grandmothers, Sons/Daughters, Grandsons/Granddaughters and Brothers/Sisters of persons who were or are eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, so see if you have other eligible family members! We have purchased coloring books and crayons for the kiddie cart at the VA Hospital. Due to the VFW needing to use the post and lack of interest in the Community Safety day, we have given up the October 22nd date and can reschedule later on in the year. I would like to congratulate our newly elected officers Patti Daley, Jr. Vice President, Stephanie Franck, Chaplain and Trustee #2, and Clyde Sherman for Trustee #3. As always I would love to see more attendance at our meetings, or maybe you have a great idea to better our organization and do something for the community and want to be apart of it. We are always looking for volunteers to do Bingo Kitchen and various projects out in the community. Many Hands make Light work! As I write this, the Presidential Debate is on television, remember that Election Day is around the corner and to make plans to get out and vote for this very important election. At the end of the month I will be attending Fall Conference, and will share my experience at the November meeting. See you at 6:00 on October 17th. Loyally, Kelli Anne Kennedy, President

ALBANY, NY (September 14, 2016) This week, the American Red Cross unveiled the new Hero Care mobile application. This free app is designed to help members of the military, veterans and their families identify and access both emergency and non-emergency Red Cross services from anywhere in the world. Presumptive Disability Compensation for Camp Lejeune Veterans: Today, VA issued a proposed final rule to establish presumptive disability compensation eligibility for veterans who were exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune during the period beginning August 1, 1953, and ending on December 31, 1987. To be eligible, veterans must have served in Camp Lejeune for a minimum of 30 cumulative days during the specified dates and have a diagnosis of kidney cancer, non-hodgkin's lymphoma, adult leukemia, liver cancer, bladder cancer, multiple myeloma, Parkinson's disease, or aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes. This proposed rule would apply to claims received by VA on or after the date of publication, pending review of the comments received and publication of the final rule in the Federal Register. The rule would not apply retroactively. A veteran whose claim was denied before the final rule is published must file a new claim to obtain a new determination of entitlement under the final regulation. Direct Scheduling for Audiology and Optometry Appointments: On Thursday, VA announced it would eliminate a primary care referral requirement for veterans seeking appointments with audiologists or optometrists. The Audiology and Optometry Direct Scheduling Initiative is being piloted throughout the country and is expected to be fully operational within all VA Medical Centers by the end of 2016.
