When and why did you decide to be an entrepreneur? As a teacher and mother, my goal was to create a family business that would teach my teen how to successfully run his own business. Polar Snoballs allows me to leave a legacy that demonstrates money management, customer service and how to become the face of a company. Polar Snoballs allows my family to give back to the community, to our schools, churches, museums and other non-profit organizations. It allows us the unique opportunity to put smiles on faces near and far. How has the Small Business Center assisted you? I received expert guidance on how to refine my goals and create a detailed plan. The center provided information about how to get started, including all the necessary forms and online resources, plus cautionary pitfalls to avoid to stay on target with my goal. The Small Business Center staff was not only extremely knowledgeable, but also helped me pinpoint my dream to make it become my reality. What is the most challenging aspect of owning your own business? Remembering to have work-life balance. I leave time for life outside of the business, especially with friends and family. Kelly Fields, owner Polar Snoballs by Kelly The Pitch A Polar Snoball is the softest, fluffiest shaved ice you ve ever tasted, infused with our high-quality, handmade classic New Orleans flavorings. We believe you ll agree; it s the coolest, most refreshing treat around! When you launched your venture, how did you get your seed funding? I worked in the financial industry for more than 10 years. During that time, I learned how to maximize my retirement and 401k contributions. This allowed me to purchase my business without financing. What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs? I would tell aspiring entrepreneurs that it s okay to not have all the answers when you first start. You will learn the answers and figure out everything you need to know in time.
