Background of the expertise mission The Regional Artemisinin Initiative (RAI) was identified as an early applicant grant under the Global Fund New Funding Model. The initiative s goal is to eliminate falciparum malaria from the areas with proven artemisinin resistance and the surrounding areas at risk in the following five countries of the Greater Mekong sub-region: Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos. A regional body (Regional Steering Committee RSC) has been formed to act as a regional coordinating mechanism for this Global Fund grant. The RSC includes members of the following constituencies: Asian Development Bank, ASEAN, development partners, WHO, five RAI countries, academia, civil society, private sector, China and Gates Foundation. The program consists of a country component and a regional component, also called the intercountry component (ICC). Both components have recently been approved by the GFATM, and preparations are now being made for fast implementation of the program to counter the emergency of emerging artemisinin resistance in falciparum malaria in the region.
