4-H PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST Objectives: The 4-H public speaking contest is designed to promote a greater interest in public speaking and to allow all 4-H members the opportunity to develop and polish their public speaking skills. To learn the different types of presentations - regular talk, illustrated talk and demonstration. To properly plan, develop and deliver a presentation. To learn to score and judge a presentation. Who can participate: Entries: Boys and girls, Age 9-19, enrolled and actively involved in 4-H projects. All participants must complete an entry form and return it to the OSU Extension office by the designated due date. Specific categories will be determined by the number of entries. Awards: Blue and red ribbons will be given to all participants. Plaques will be awarded to Champions and Reserve Champions in each division at the Acheivement Banquet. Special awards will be presented provided sponsorship is available. Special Categories: Some special awards are provided by State and National Donors. Local Sponsors also provide awards. Specific requirements are outlined on the following pages. 1. BREAD - Cornmeal and Wheat Flour Award: Bracelet or Tray Jr. Division: 1 Team (2) 1 Individual (1) STATE AND NATIONAL SPONSORS SPECIAL CATEGORIES 4-H SPEECH & DEMONSTRATION CONTEST Sr. Division: 1 Team (2) 1 Individual (1) Demonstration Yeast bread or quick bread, muffins, biscuits, cornbread, griddle cakes, waffles. Can receive once in Jr. Division and once in Sr. Division. 2. DAIRY PRODUCTS/Can receive only once Per Division 3 per County Jr. and Sr. Division 1 Team (2) Demonstration 1 Individual (1) Demonstration or Milk, cheese, butter, cream, ice cream, yogurt, cultured products 3. PEANUT - Peanut Production or Peanut Food Nutrition 2 per County Jr. and Sr. Division 1 Team (2) Demonstration Individual (1) or Demonstration Presentations must relate to peanut production, processing, or marketing, or food recipes, using peanuts or peanut products. 4. SWINE - Pork Production/1 plaque/can receive only once Age 13 as of January, current year Pork - related illustrated talk or demonstration which promotes pork as a food and not merely pork production. Must present to a group other than 4-H and complete an Oklahoma Pork Council Award form and bring it to the county contest. (Forms are available in the Extension Office.) 5. BEEF - Selecting, Preparing and Serving/$25.00 Can recieve only once. 1 per county Individual Talk or Demonstration

Juniors: Make one presentation on Beef Selecting, Preparing and Serving to a group other than 4-H or Cattlewomen. Write a one page essay on Importance of Beef In the Diet and attach to this form. Prepare Beef 12 times, using 4 different cooking methods (2 moist; 2 dry heat). Seniors: Same as Junior requirements, except prepareing Beef 20 times not 12. These awards will be presented at the annual Achievement Banquet.

CLOTHING Be Sew In, Muskogee Award - Trophy 2 per County 1 Jr. (Age 12 and under) 1 Sr. (Age 13 and over) or Receive only once as a Junior. Receive only once as a Senior. LOCAL SPONSORS SPECIAL CATEGORIES PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST Participants must be enrolled and actively involved in the 4-H Fabrics and Fashions project. Presentation topics may relate to CONSTRUCTION, PERSONAL IMAGE, TEXTILE SCIENCE AND CARE, OR CONSUMER EDUCATION. CONSERVATION - Adair County Conservation District Award - $50 Savings Bond 1 per County Junior (Age 9-12) Individual Presentation Receive only once Participants must be enrolled and actively involved in Natural Resources and/or Plant Science 4-H projects. The purpose of this award is to promote Soil and Water Conservation and to prepare young boys and girls for advanced competition sponsored by the Soil Conservation Districts. ELECTRIC - Ozarks Electric Co-Op Charles Crozier Award - Electrical Appliance 1 per County Senior (Age 13-19) Individual presentation (Not to exceed 7 minutes). Receive only once Participants must be enrolled and actively involved in Mechanical Sciences and/or Safety projects. The purpose of this award is to increase awareness of the important effects electric energy has on man and his environment. COMMERCIAL BANKING - Personal Money Management Bank of Commerce -

Award - $100 Savings Bond 1 per County Senior (Age 13-19) Individual (Not to exceed 12 minutes) Receive once The purpose of this activity is (1) to learn about the functions and services of banks in Oklahoma, (2) to learn the fundamentals of the various aspects of personal money management, (3) to further stress the importance of illustrated talks as a tool in teaching subject matter. COMMERCIAL CONVENIENCE FOODS - Jr and Sr Divisions- Zion School Award - $50 Savings Bond 2 per County 1 Junior (Age 12 and under) 1 Senior (Age 13 and over), (Not to exceed 8 minutes) Receive only once as Junior Receive only once as Senior Participants must be enrolled and actively participating in the Revised 4-H Food Science Projects. The purpose of this awards program is to promote the use of commercial convenience foods in meal preparation. The presentation should focus on the use of one of the following: commercial frozen foods, commercial freeze dried foods, commercial dried foods and/or commercial canned foods. The presentation should include nutrition and consumer information COOPERATIVE - Robert Crozier Crozier Auction Service Award- Plaque 1 per County Individual only- must be 16 years of age and not over 18; must have completed sophomore year. - Not to exceed 12 minutes The purpose of this presentation is to explain the cooperative business with the use of visuals. A comparison may be made with the following types of business: Individual Business Business Partnerships General or Ordinary Business Corporations For more information refer to the 4-H Cooperative Talk These awards will be presented at the annual Achievement Banquet. NE DISTRICT PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST

The NE District Contest is designed to give county youth an opportunity to develop and polish their public speaking skills. Objectives: Refer to 4-H Communication Project - Speaking, Talking, and Expressing Yourself. Who Can Participate: This is not an advancement contest - It is open to any 4-H members ages 9-19 who wish to participate. Club/School/Parent Responsibility: Provide or arrange for transportation and supervising adults. Complete entry forms and forward to the Adair County Extension office by designated date. Include insurance and award fee. County Responsibility: Provide 1 Judge Inform Organizational Leaders of guidelines and encourage participation. District Responsibility: Awards and Arrangements
