Page 1 of 15 Alumni E-Newsletter October 2014 LIVING AND LEARNING CENTER UPDATE Produced by University Relations The Virginia Union University Board of Trustees announced a gift of $2.1 million, the largest one-time cash gift from a single living donor in the university's history. The Board also approve the anonymous donor's wishes that the bulk of the money be used to pay the remaining debt o the Learning Center, the conference and seminar facility that anchors the university's new Livi and Learning Center. According to the donor's wishes, the Living and Learning Center will be named for Virginia Union President Dr. Claude G. Perkins. "The naming of the Center after Dr. Perkins is appropriate because of his transformative
Page 2 of 15 leadership," said Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, Chairman of the Virginia Union University Board of Trustees. "It's the work of Dr. Perkins these past five years that makes it possible for someone to visit this campus and be inspired to give a gift of this magnitude." "We cannot express enough our gratitude to this very generous donor," Dr. Perkins added. The $100,000 that will remain after the Learning Center $2 million debt is paid will be used to establish an endowment to support the Virginia Union Art Museum Galleries. HOMECOMING 2014 Rebuilding the Dream October 6-11, 2014 VUU alumni and friends traveled to the university campus to attend Homecoming 2014. Many events were planned including the Classes in Reunion Dinner and Jazz Soiree, the VUUNAA Awards Luncheon, and Celebrate Good Times Party. The VUU football team also captured the win against Lincoln University with a 78 to 13 win.

VIRGINIA UNION PROFESSOR PUBLISHES NEW UNIVERSITY HISTORY BOOK: First History Publication for General Circulation in Nearly 90 Years Published by: University Relations Virginia Union University Professor Dr. Raymond Pierre Hylton has published a history of the university, highlighting significant events since the university's founding in 1865. The book entitled Virginia Union University is a part of The Campus History Series published by Arcadia Press. The book is only the third history of the university ever published and is the first available for general circulation since 1925. It includes 180 illustrations depicting personalities places, and events of the past and present, including priceless photos from the Virginia Union University archives. Dr. Hylton has been a full-time faculty member at Virginia Union University for more than 20 years, serving as chairperson of the Department of History/Political Science for the last five
Page 4 of 15 years. He has also served as dean of Virginia Union's School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He earned master's and doctoral degrees in history from University College, Dublin The publication of Virginia Union University: The Campus History Series coincides with the university's 150th anniversary celebration and is available at the VUU Campus Bookstore, as well as Barnes & Noble, at a cost of $21.99. Albany State's 34-12 win over Clark Atlanta Saturday apparently was enough to give the Ram (5-2) the No.1 spot in the Division II poll over Winston-Salem State (7-1), who fell to the No.3 spot with 11 first-place votes after beating Livingston 34-17. Tuskegee (7-2) held steady at the No. 2 spot. Virginia State (6-2) was fourth, followed by Virginia Union (6-2), Fort Valley State (6-2), Miles (5-3), Livingstone (5-3), Fayetteville State (4-4) and Bowie State (3-5).
