SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES FOR APPLICANTS Please read each of the following descriptions to determine which scholarships you are eligible for. On the application, check only those for which you are eligible. In addition to SISD Foundation scholarships, The SISD Foundation administers a number special scholarships provided by individuals and or other independent organizations. SISD Foundation Scholarship The Socorro ISD Foundation for Excellence in Education will award seventeen $3,000 Foundation scholarships; three for each of the five high schools and one each for Options High School and Mission ECHS. It is funded by contributions from employees of the SISD, through SISD Foundation fundraising projects and by contributions from organizations and from individuals. Recipients may attend a community college, a 4-year university or a trade/technical school. W. G. Barber Scholarship This scholarship is awarded in the name of W. G. Barber, father of former SISD Superintendent, Jerry Barber. It is funded by contributions from the employees of the SISD. Scholarships are granted to graduates of the Socorro ISD with a demonstrated interest in a career in Education, who will attend UTEP or El Paso Community College. Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each will be awarded to a senior from each of the five high schools, Options High School and Mission ECHS. Marian McQuiddy Scholarship This scholarship is awarded in memory of the late Marian McQuiddy, former Journalism teacher at Socorro High School. It is funded by contributions from the family and friends of Marian McQuiddy. One $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior at Socorro High School. Candidates must show demonstrated interest in photography or creative writing. It is preferred, but not required, that the candidate has served on the yearbook staff. Al Cardenas Scholarship One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded in the name of Al Cardenas, to a graduate of Socorro HS. This scholarship is funded by the family and friends of Al Cardenas, who served in multiple administrative positions during his long career in SISD. These scholarships are available to students planning to attend any community college, 4-year university or a trade/technical school. Dr. Sue Shook Scholarship One $500 scholarship will be awarded in the name of the late Dr. Sue Shook, former Assistant Superintendent for SISD. It is funded by contributions from the family and friends of Dr. Sue Shook. It will be awarded to a graduating SISD senior pursuing a career in the field of education. James Butler Scholarship The James Butler Scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $500 to a senior graduating from each of the five high schools, Options High School and Mission ECHS for a total of seven scholarships. These scholarships are awarded in the memory of James Butler, former member of the SISD Special Education Department, and an advocate of a better life for children with disabilities. This scholarship is funded by contributions from the family and friends of James Butler and the SISD Department of Special Education. These scholarships are available to students planning to attend a
community college, a 4-year university, or a trade/technical school. Applicants must be currently receiving services from the SISD Department of Special Education. Hank Green Scholarship One $500 scholarship will be awarded annually in the name of Hank Green, beloved former Social Studies teacher, to an Americas High School graduate. The student must attend the University of Texas at El Paso, and plan to major in Education. Preference will be given to students who will major in Social Studies Education. Cordova Broadcast Media Scholarship One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior in SISD who is currently enrolled in or has completed a high school Media Technology course, with a grade of 85 or higher, and be pursuing a degree in a Media Technology field after graduation. The student must have 90% or higher school attendance and a strong Community Service background. The teacher recommendation form must be from the Media Technology teacher. The top three finalists will be required to submit an electronic portfolio of video production and editing work. Walgreens Way to Well Scholarship Two $1000 scholarships will be awarded to graduates in SISD. Graduates must demonstrate an interest in a career in the medical or health fields. Student must have a GPA of 3.8 or higher and be involved in student activities or a campus student organization. Good attendance is a must. Your letter should include information regarding your interest in a medical/health career and how you plan to give back to the community. Recipients may attend a community college, a 4-year university or a trade/technical school. SHS Alumni Legacy Scholarship One $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior at Socorro High School. This scholarship is awarded by alumni of Socorro High School, who believe and have a passion for supporting students pursuing a college education. It is funded by contributions of alumni and friends of SHS who through their contributions add to their own legacy and to that of the recipient and our community. Candidates must be planning to attend a community college or 4-year university. This committee will be giving special consideration to those candidates who demonstrate a strong Community Service and/or involvement in extracurricular activities. This scholarship is open to all majors. 19th Rifle Co., USMCR Foundation Two $4,000 scholarships will be awarded to a graduating senior in SISD who is currently an active member in good standing of the NJROTC. Include in your essay some details of your participation in your unit and how you plan to use this scholarship. Your ROTC instructor should complete your community leader recommendation form. Completed applications must be returned to your counselor by March 5, 2014. Applicants will be notified of the scholarship selections on or before May 1, 2014. Scholarship awards will be sent directly to the post-secondary institution listed by the student. If the student fails to enroll and begin classes, unused scholarship funds will be recovered from the educational institution and deposited into the appropriate Foundation account. Community Service/Sponsor rating form *This form must be from a community leader or an extracurricular sponsor verifying your participation in community service and or volunteer hours * Students applying for the NJROTC must have ROTC instructor fill out #3 3. Tell us about yourself in a letter. Limit letter to one page, single space, size 12 font and your name must be included in this letter. Why do you want to receive and why are you deserving of this scholarship. Include future goals. You should include some personal, economic and family considerations in this letter. *Please note that this letter could serve as one of the largest factors of your final judges ratings.
4. Attendance record Senior year. More than 5 full days of unexcused absences will disqualify you. 5. Transcripts: Officially sealed high school academic transcript. Foundation members will be considering all factors of your application. We hope to get to know you as an individual. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicant must submit the original and 3 copies of the application inside a manila envelope with student name, ID number, and high school name printed on the ourside. Only one sealed transcript is required. Do not open and copy your transcript. Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or legal resident.
