2012 ONS National Election Tracy Gosselin, RN, MSN, AOCN TONS Member Slated for the 2012 ONS Treasurer Office Tracy currently works as the Associate Chief Nursing Officer & Assistant Vice President at Duke Medicine. This is an excerpt from her letter to ONS chapters to provide insight on her candidacy. From my role as a frontline nurse through today, I ve learned that we, as nurses, are the glue that connects the sometimes fragmented components of the healthcare system into a cohesive plan of care for the patient... Patients and families today share their frustrations and fears, but also talk about the hope, symptom management, and compassion nurses bring to their lives. Nurses also discuss the challenges they face, from the added demands of sicker patients, to the stresses of working in a busy environment, and just dealing with the sheer volume of patients that sometimes seems overwhelming. I am often reminded during these times how much our presence impacts others. my family members taught me about the value of service to one s community. In particular, the need for advocacy, always standing up for what I believe in, and that I must persevere even when the going gets tough. I remember my first ONS local chapter meeting Wow! Now this is a great group to be a part of. To this day I still think Wow when I look around the room at the community that has been created in our local chapter. I am excited about the possibility of serving the ONS members on the Board as its Treasurer. Having served on and led many ONS Project Teams, this role presents a natural progression for how I can continue to serve the Society and its members. I am enthusiastic about the learning opportunities that lie ahead I look forward to the opportunity and privilege of being able to help contribute to building that future. DEADLINE to vote is February 15, 2012 http://www.ons.org/membership/election. See all candidate letters, bios, and podcasts on the TONS Virtual Community. Member Spotlight Caryl Fulcher MSN, APRN-BC & Tracy Gosselin MSN, RN, AOCN The end of 2011 brings to a close the ONS Year of Psychosocial Care emphasizing education and practice integrating psychosocial aspects of oncology nursing. For several years we have seen increased focus on the importance of psychosocial care for patients with cancer. The 2008 Institute of Medicine Report, Cancer Care for the Whole Patient, was most influential. For facilities accredited by the American College of Surgeons, standards requiring distress screening must be phased into cancer care by 2015. Awareness of the importance of practical, emotional, and spiritual concerns to patients and families is not new to oncology nurses, however, integrating screening and interventions for these concerns may be challenging. In 2009, ONS surveyed members on psychosocial care and subsequently created a work team to address identified needs. TONS member Tracy Gosselin was a leader on the survey team and Caryl Fulcher joined her on the team that created educational opportunities to enhance psychosocial care. The blurbs in ONS publications will likely end with 2011, but the online course in psychosocial care will again be offered four times in 2012. If your professional development plan includes a need for education in psychosocial care, here is one opportunity to consider. Though the Year of Psychosocial Care is coming to a close, as nurses we know the psychosocial care pervades all aspects of the care we provide to patients every second of every day. Cheers to Caryl and Tracy for drawing particular attention to this paramount aspect of nursing care. May we all continue to hold the psychosocial care of our patients in high esteem.
