Narrative. The 56th Logistics Readiness Squadron s lineage makes it one of the oldest wing units. On 28 July 1947, it was designated the Supply Squadron, 56th Maintenance and Supply Group. It was organized on 15 August 1947, along with the wing, at Selfridge Field (later, Air Force Base), Michigan, and assigned to the 56th Maintenance and Supply Group. On 1 August 1948, the unit was discontinued. It was replaced with the 56th Supply Squadron, Fighter, Jet, which was constituted on 14 June 1948. On 8 February 1988, the two were consolidated. Activated on 1 August 1948, it was assigned to the 56th Maintenance and Supply Group. On 20 January 1950, it was redesignated as the 56th Supply Squadron. It was inactivated on 6 February 1952. On 28 December 1960, the squadron was reactivated and organized on 1 February 1961 at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, Michigan, and assigned to the 56th Air Base (later, 56th Combat Support) Group. On 1 April 1963, the unit was reassigned to the 56th Fighter Wing (Air Defense). The squadron was discontinued, and inactivated, on 1 January 1964. The squadron was activated 16 March 1967 and organized on 8 April 1967, at Nakhon Phanon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. It was assigned to the 56th Air Commando (later, 56th Special Operations,) Wing. While in Thailand, the squadron earned 12 Campaign Streamers, 3 Presidential Unit Citations, 4 Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards with Combat "V" Device, and a Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm. At an unknown date, the unit was reassigned to Tactical Air Command, but rejoined the 56th Tactical Fighter (later, 56th Tactical Training; later, 56th Fighter) Wing on 30 June 1975 at MacDill AFB, Florida. On 1 November 1991, the squadron was reassigned to the 56th Logistics Group. While at MacDill AFB, the squadron supported F-4 and F-16 training operations. On 4 January 1994, the squadron inactivated. The unit reactivated on 1 April 1994 at Luke AFB, Arizona, reporting again to the 56th Logistics Group. On 1 August 2002, the unit absorbed the personnel and equipment of the 56th Transportation Squadron and was redesignated 56th Logistics Readiness Squadron. That same day, the squadron was reassigned to the 56th Support (later, 56th Mission Support Group). Today, the squadron provides responsive logistics support to train the world's finest F-16 pilots and crew chiefs and rapidly move combat ready forces in support of expeditionary operations worldwide.
