About USNA As the undergraduate college of our country s naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers of competence, character, and compassion in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the Academy for four years, graduating with Bachelor of Science degrees and then commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps. Around The Yard The scenic Naval Academy campus, known as the Yard, is located in historic Annapolis, Md., where the Severn River flows into the Chesapeake Bay. With its combination of early 20th-century and modern buildings, the Naval Academy is a blend of tradition and state-of-the-art technology that exemplifies today s Navy and Marine Corps. Throughout the Yard, tree-shaded monuments commemorate the bravery and heroism that are an inherent part of the academy s heritage. Buildings and walkways are named for Naval Academy graduates who have contributed to naval history and their nation. The Naval Academy also is the final resting place of Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones, whose words, I have not yet begun to fight, have inspired generations of naval officers. His crypt is located beneath the Academy Chapel. A National Historic Site, the Naval Academy hosts more than one million tourists every year from all over the United States and around the world. They come to enjoy the natural beauty of the Yard, to recall some of this country s naval history and to marvel at the traditions carried on in midshipmen parades and military formations. Tourists and midshipmen also appreciate downtown Annapolis, which lies just outside the gates of the Academy. With its colonial charm and busy waterfront, Maryland s state capital provides a pleasant, diverse setting for one of America s premier colleges, the United States Naval Academy. 3
History of Navy Lacrosse Of the 33 varsity sports which thrive at the Naval Academy, none surpasses lacrosse s winning tradition that includes eight-consecutive National Championships among a total of 17 to date. Navy s rich and storied heritage owes its origin to former Johns Hopkins players Frank Breyer and Bill Hudgins who volunteered to help organize and coach Navy s first collegiate team in 1908. Navy lacrosse owes its Glory Years largely to a Rutgers University graduate named Willis Bildy Bilderback whose record of nine National Championships in 14 years as head lacrosse coach is likely never to be matched. In addition to winning outright or sharing the collegiate national championship eight years in a row (1960-67), Bildy s 1965 team was the first college team in 42 years to win both the National Collegiate Championship and the National Open Championship. More than 400 donors from the extended Navy lacrosse family composed of current and former players, coaches, trainers, equipment managers, team managers, and of course Navy lacrosse friends and parents around the globe made possible the Bilderback-Moore Navy Lacrosse Hall of Fame that opened in the summer of 2007. It honors heroes and champions who carried a lacrosse stick while they were Midshipmen, but it also signifies both the Naval Academy s and the alumni s commitment to support and extend Navy s winning lacrosse tradition. Fittingly named after two superb gentlemen who left their indelible legacy in both the sport and Navy s winning tradition, hundreds of heroes, champions, coaches and exceptional friends of Navy lacrosse have been enshrined. Included are two Medal of Honor recipients, 31 Navy Cross honorees, and 50 Silver Star winners among more than 400 former All-Americans in whose ranks are 13 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductees, 10 state Lacrosse Halls of Fame members, and 21 National Individual Award winners. Many more Navy Lacrosse alumni are recipients of Distinguished Flying Crosses, Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts. James Carrington, has special recognition in the Bilderback-Moore Lacrosse Hall of Fame as both a player and coach as he remains the only Midshipman since 1850 to receive All-America honors in three sports (lacrosse, football, and swimming). Of course, among the four National Coaches of The Year recognized in the Bilderback-Moore Hall of Fame are National Lacrosse Hall of Fame members William H. Dinty Moore for whom Jim Carrington played, and Bildy, for whom Jim coached. 4
KingHall (Meals) Optimum efficiency is the only thing that can prevent utter chaos when more than 4,000 people sit down at one time for dinner at 372 tables spread over a 55,000- square-foot area. Hot meals are served to all within five minutes, reflecting the efficiency that exists in King Hall, the midshipman dining hall at the United States Naval Academy. Statistics of the operation are impressive, from the capacity of automated food preparation equipment in the galley to the washing room which handles more than 40,000 pieces of silver, dishes and glassware for an average meal. The staff in the academy s Midshipmen Food Service Division plan, prepare and serve more than 12,000 meals per day. To accomplish their tasks, they use automated food preparation equipment that handles large quantities of food. Food preparation equipment includes two conveyor beltfed, deep-fat fryers, that, together, can cook a ton of fried shrimp in an hour; two gas-flame broilers, also operated by a conveyor belt, that churn out 3,000 hamburgers per hour; two rotary ovens that can hold 80 roasting pans and cook 320 12- to 16-pound turkeys at a time; and six steam-jacketed kettles that can heat 750 gallons of soup. Twenty mobile serving carts, one for every 20 tables, maintain the trays of prepared food at 140 degrees until serving time. The academy s food service program may be operated on a large scale, but it does so with remarkable efficiency and high standards. There is a concerted effort to keep the food NAVY NAVY LACROSSE from becoming institutional. Nutrition, the attractiveness of presentation, the variety of menu items and the quality of food preparation and service are paramount concerns. The nutritionally balanced, daily diet approximates 3,500-4,000 calories per midshipman at a government-authorized individual ration allowance. All meat is U.S. Choice; vegetables are Grade A Fancy; and dairy products, including 4,000 quarts of fresh milk, arrive each day. In a typical day, the midshipmen menu might include more than 1,000 gallons of milk, two tons of meat, a ton of green vegetables, two tons of potatoes, 1,200 loaves of bread, 720 pies, and perhaps 300 gallons of homemade Naval Academy ice cream. 5
KingHall (Cont) A daily menu might look something like this: Breakfast - The morning meal features cheese omelets, broiled bacon and home-fried potatoes, hot cereal during the winter months, fresh fruit, more than eight varieties of ready-to-eat cereal, and freshly baked donuts, pastries or bagels. Steaming hot coffee and hot chocolate are also available. Each table is preset with milk, orange juice and all the necessary condiments. Lunch - Lunch usually consists of sandwich-type entrees. The freshly made dessert is usually preset on the table along with milk, salad, bread, crackers and condiments. A hot soup is also preset in winter months. Just in case a midshipman dislikes the main entree, creamy and crunchy peanut butter and jelly are always available on each table. Buffet Dinner - The evening meal is similar to lunch, but the main entree of chicken, beef or fish will be accompanied by a vegetable and potato or rice dish. The midshipmen s favorite menu items include chicken tenderloins, chili con carne, individual pan pizza and hamburgers. Each year, King Hall continues to provide quality food and superior service to the Brigade of Midshipmen. King Hall Camp Rules 1. Remove your cover (hat) before entering the ward room. 2. Socks and shoes must be worn (sandals are appropriate). 3. You shirt must be completely tucked in. 4. Food will be served once all the campers are seated at the table. No one may begin to eat until everyone at the table is ready. 5. Food is served family style. Once everyone has one helping then you may have seconds. 6. When leaving the dining hall you must push in your seat and arrange your silverware so the handles are at 3 o clock. 7. You may not bring lacrosse equipment into King Hall 8. No lacrosse balls are allowed in King Hall 6
Bancroft Hall (Dorms) Bancroft Hall at the United States Naval Academy is the largest single dormitory in the world. Bancroft Hall, named after former Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, is home for the entire brigade of 4,400 midshipmen, and contains some 1,700 rooms, 4.8 miles of corridors and 33 acres of floor space. All the basic facilities that midshipmen need for daily living are found in the hall. It is affectionately referred to as Mother B by Midshipmen. The Hall has been air conditioned since 2003. Room capacity ranges from double occupancy to quads. 7
Bancroft Hall Camp Rules 1. Never wear a cover (hat) inside the hall. 2. Do not wear cleated shoes in the hall. 3. You must wear your reversible at all times. 4. Appropriate shoes or flip flops are required at all times. 5. The door to your room must remain propped open until lights out. 6. No lacrosse can be played in the hall 7. No lacrosse balls are allowed in Bancroft Hall- any ball found will become the property of the United States Naval Academy. 8. When entering into another persons room you must first stand at the door way and ask permission to enter. You may enter only when permission is granted. 9. Windows are to remain secured (closed) at all times. 10. All campers are required to keep their rooms in a neat and orderly fashion. There is a uniformed military roving patrol that continuously walks through all of Bancroft Hall s eight wings that may inspect any room at anytime. 11. At lights out, place your trash can in the hall outside your door. In the morning return the empty trash can to your room. 3 8
Athletic Fields The Naval Academy has 18 grass lacrosse fields and 3 artifical outdoor turf fields. Each field has high intensity lighting to ensure we can get a full days worth of work in. All our athletic fields have the unique characteristic of being located directly on the water. Each field offers an incredible view of the Chesapeake Bay or the Sceninc Severn River. There are two indoor fields located on the Yard. Halsey Field house and Wesely Brown Fieldhouse. Each field offers us the opportunity to continue the camp during inclement weather Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium is the primary playing field for the Navy Lacrosse team. It is considered to be one of the finest stadiums in the world of lacrosse. 9
Athletic Fields Rules - Wear your issued tank top to all sessions (you will receive the tank top at check in). - All NCAA mandated equipment (helmet, mouthpiece, shoulder pads, elbow pads and gloves) must be worn for every session. - You must bring your issued water bottle to every session (we will issue you a water bottle at check in). - You are required to attend every session of camp. If you are injured the athletic trainers will treat your injury. Only an athletic trainer may excuse you from a session. - As per NCAA rules, there will be no body checks in all drills and games. - Foul and inappropriate language will not be tolerated. - You are expected to give 100% of your effort for every session. - Treat everyone on the field (including your opponent) with dignity and respect. - Clean up after yourself. Do not leave trash or equipment on the fields 10
Pools The Naval Academy has some of the best pools on the East Coast. Depending on the pools availability, Campers will have the opportunity to swim in at least one of the Naval Academy s five pools. NOTE: Every camper who wants to swim in our pools will be required to take a swim test on the first day of camp. The test consists of swimming one length of the pool and treading water for one minute. You must pass to swim. 11
Campus Tours The Naval Academy visitor center runs daily tours every hour during the week. To sign up for a tour, the camper will need to go to the command center to sign up. The command center will be located in a convenient location in Bancroft Hall and is manned 24 hours a day. NOTE: due to the security requirements of the Naval Academy, campers cannot explore the campus by themselves. All campers wishing to see more of the campus must go to the command center to sign up for a tour. From time to time, weather, security or other unforeseen conditions may warrant that a campus tours be modified or cancelled. 12
Religious Services The Naval Academy has four chapels on the Yard that can accomadate any religious denomination. If the camp runs through a Sunday there will be an opportunity to attend church services. These services are offered in the morning and are completely optional. Typically the protestant services are at 11:00AM and the Catholic mass is at 9:00AM (times are subject to change). If you plan on attending, you will need to bring a collared shirt and slacks. Since the church services are held at the same time as a camp session, all those that attend church will miss that morning s camp session. To schedule a service, the camper needs to sign up at the camp command post. 13
Leadership & Teamwork Training Reliable leadership and solid teamwork is a quality that Navy lacrosse embraces in all aspects. Campers have the option to attend lectures and seminars on a broad range of topics that center on the ideals of leadership and teamwork. Teams have the opportunity to attend team building workouts known as LZ drills. These drills are designed to make teams work together to achieve common goals and overcome individual barriers. Guest speakers will include members from a vast array of military communities (SEALs, Aviators, Naval & Marine Corps Officers). 14
Admissions Campers will have the option to attend a general admissions brief about Service Academies. All aspects of applying to the Academies are covered. This is followed up with an invaluable question and answer period with the admissions officer. This is applicable to overnight campers only. On an individual basis, you may arrange to meet with your regions academic officer while you are at camp. NOTE: You should reach out to your regions admission officer before you arrive at camp. Camp Rules and Regulations Below you will find a general set of rules for all our camps. Certain segments of the rules may not be directly applicable to every camp. Please be sure to read the rules and regulations of the United States Naval Academy s Lacrosse Camp thoroughly. RESPECT - Your Shipmates - Your Coaches - Other People on the Yard - The Plebes, Midshipmen and Their Detailers In the future, they will defend this country and will be sent into harm s way to protect your freedom. USE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE AND TONE - Listen to your coaches; look them in the face when they are talking to you. - Do what you are instructed to do. WE WILL TELL YOU ONLY ONCE. We expect you to listen. - Respond when you are spoken to. - Foul and inappropriate language will not be tolerated. DRESS - You will be issued a camp jersey. You will be expected to wear it whenever you are at camp. - Wear your hat the right way. Take it off indoors. - You must wear socks to King Hall (dining facility) (Sandals are appropriate with socks) - Shirts must be tucked in when in King Hall. - If you plan on attending church services a collared shirt and slacks are necessary. Camp Rules and Regulations (Cont) OFF THE FIELD - It is important to follow directions at all times. - Stay in the camp area. You are not permitted to leave the camp area without proper escort. - Do not engage in an activity that is not sponsored or supervised by the Navy Lacrosse Staff. - Be courteous to the Plebes, their Detailers, and all Midshipmen at all times. - Remember that Plebes marching in formation or engaged in Physical Training have the right of way at all time. Please clear a path for them to get through. - Your conduct is a direct reflection of your parents and our camp. - DO NOT BRING A LACROSSE BALL TO CAMP. DO NOT BRING ANY LACROSSE BALLS INTO BANCROFT HALL. Any lacrosse ball found in Bancroft Hall is considered to be the property of the US Naval Academy. - KEEP AWAY FROM SEAWALL AND ROCKS. - Be respectful and courteous to Academy Staff if they speak to you. 17
Parents at Camp Parents and relatives are always welcome to watch any session of our camp. The best way to find your son is to ask anyone of our staff members wearing a gold shirt. Please keep in mind that due to security concerns we will not be able to issue any parking passes. You will need to park off of the yard and walk onto the Academy. You and all members of your family above the age of 16 will be required to show a valid government picture ID to the gate guards in order to walk onto the yard. If you come to watch a camper on the field, we ask that you stay to the periphery of the athletic field and be mindful that there can be lacrosse balls flying at high velocity from several points on the field. Please keep the younger members of your family under a careful watch to ensure their safety. Our staff members may occasionally ask you to adjust your seating. Always be courteous to the people around you and respectful of your surroundings. All our athletic fields (except the football stadium) are on the water so enjoy the view and don t forget the sun screen. If you wish to check your son out of camp early or on a temporary basis (dinner with the family, etc.), you will need to make prior arrangements with the staff director (410.293.5548) and sign him out at the camp command post. We will only check out a camper to an adult member of his immediate family unless prior arrangements have been made with the camp director. Once you return your son to camp, you will need to sign him back in at the camp command post. Anyone checking out a camper must have a valid picture ID. 18
AIRPORT SERVICES Many of our overnight camps offer free curb-side pick up and drop off service to Baltimore Washington Airport (BWI) airport. BWI is the closest airport to the Naval Academy and is roughly 30 minutes away by bus or car. To utilize this service, all you need to do is fill out the travel page section of your online registration. You can log back in and update your travel information if it changes up until one week before camps starts. WHERE TO MEET CAMP STAFF WHEN YOU GET TO BWI Once your son arrives at BWI airport he will need to pick up his baggage and then head over to baggage carousel 13 & 14 to meet our staff. We will have multiple staff at the airport who will be either in a blue navy lacrosse coach T- shirt or in their Military dress white uniform. A list of staff names at the airport will be e-mailed to you the day before your son departs for camp. Once your son checks in with us we will hand him a cell phone and tell him to call home. WHERE THE CAMP SHUTTLE WILL DROP YOU OFF AT BWI AFTER CAMP At the end of camp, our shuttle will drop each camper off in front of their airline s departure area. A representative of our camp will direct each camper towards his ticket counter. UNACCOMPANIED MINORS FLYING INTO/ OUT OF BWI Each individual airline has its own policies regarding minors on their flights. If your son will be flying alone, you should contact your choice of airline about their rules governing minors on their flights. In some instances, if your child is very young, your airline will require him to have a designated chaperone. If your son is in this category, he will not be able to use our free shuttle service. Due to the large number of campers flying into and out of the airport for each session of camp, our staff cannot act as a personal chaperone for any individual camper. DELAYED/ CHANGED FLIGHTS If you have filled out our on-line travel form and if your son s flight is delayed for any reason, we will still pick him up!! We will have staff at the airport until every camper is picked up and brought to the Academy. However, if you do not complete the on-line travel form we will not know to wait for your son and may not even have staff at the airport at that time. PLEASE fill out the on-line travel form. EARLY PICK UP For those campers flying in from distant places and wish to arrive the night before camp begins, you may fly in the night before camp starts and we will pick you up at the BWI airport. There is an additional fee of $105 for this service. The fee covers the extra transportation, extra night of supervision, dinner, and breakfast. You will receive a bill for this service before hand. You may also use your son s camp bank account to pay for the service. We ask that you fill out the on-line travel form as soon as possible. Please try to arrange your son s flight so that he arrives as close to 7:00PM on the night before camp. Once your son arrives at BWI airport he will need to pick up his baggage and then head over to baggage carousel 13 & 14 to meet our staff. Camp Cancellation Policy No refunds will be made in the event of interruption or cancellation by any camper or parent after commencement of the camp. Requests for refunds must be made utilizing the online registration site https://register.navylacrossecamps.com or in writing via registered mail to Navy Lacrosse camps 566 Brownson Rd Annapolis MD 21402. Refund processing time is about 3-4 weeks. Enrollments that are not paid in full by the final payment due date are subject to cancellation and in the event an enrollment is canceled, a cancellation fee will apply. No refunds will be given on any camp for no-shows No refunds will be given for any missed days of a camp. Navy Lacrosse Camps Payment and Cancellation Policy is subject to change without notice.
