Tau tales 1 DECEMBER 2014 President Arlene s Message Regular Meeting 10:00 AM DECEMBER 13, 2014 Greetings Tau Members MID-MO REGIONAL MEETING Battle High School, Columbia I would like to take this opportunity to wish each of you a truly blessed Christmas. We have so much to be grateful for and so many concerns that need our prayers. Let us take the time to appreciate our blessings country, family, freedom, opportunities, and the friendship of Tau Sisters. And let us keep those who are ill and hurting in our thoughts and prayers. For Tau Chapter, this is a time when we can take stock of our accomplishments during the past year and make preparations for the year ahead. Our chapter has so many devoted, wonderful members, we are indeed fortunate. We are growing look for exciting announcements in the upcoming months! At our last meeting Delta State President Nadine Horner commented about the commitment and participation of Tau members. Let us remember that we identified membership as the focus of our Strategic Action Plan. Please think about outstanding women educators you know and extend an invitation to join Delta Kappa Gamma. In an effort to continue to grow, please submit a recommendation for membership before the first meeting of 2015. TAU 2 Minutes October 11, 2014 Secretary Julie Martin President Broeker called the meeting to order and shared her inspiration for teachers: the list of rules for teachers from 1872. Song leader Charlotte Parsons led us in the DKG song. Roll call was taken. Cards will be sent to Lori Means and Helen Schulte. Broeker shared more information on former member Pat Buchanan; her write up from the Jefferson City Diocese was included in the recent Tau Tales. Jerena East Giffen, an honorary Tau member, was the first female reporter in MO for the UPI. She authored numerous books. A photo from 1954 was recently shared from Judy Stanford as an addition to history section of our website. Ethel Pawley s husband was honored in the paper about his fraternity planning to honor him for 80 years of service. Broeker introduced our guest Delta State President Nadine Horner who spoke about the upcoming Spring DKG Convention in Independence. The theme is Spice Up Your Life. There are plans for members to wear formal wear at the Saturday evening banquet: a salute to the 20s when DKG was formed. Horner reviewed the awards/scholarships available through our organization. Horner offered each member a crocheted rose pin. Betty Mudd moved and Gloria Fields seconded to approve the August meeting printed in the Tau Tales. Treasurer s report: Paulette Fischer passed out membership cards. Last meeting we only had income, no expenses. Dues are continuing to come in. The treasury stands at $1778.28. Correspondence: none received. Old Business: We will contact Michele Bilyeu to encourage her to apply again for a DKG state scholarship. Alice Van Landyt shared President Arlene and guests Delta State President Nadine Horner and Sharon Jones, Alpha Psi member the goals of our Tau scholarship committee. Van Landyt also shared specifics about each scholarship available to Tau members. Papers were available for each scholarship. Beverly Kincade is applying. Reporting for THAT program: Betty Mudd encouraged members to complete the THAT form so she can report our good deeds. Deadline is our Feb. 7 meeting. Tau Teachers Care: Sherri Carter shared an example of the cups with pencil we prepared for all new teachers in the Tau area. A big thank you goes to Gracie Fields for delivering the cups. We made 78 total. A thank you will go to Karen Blevins brother for the pencil and eraser donations he provided. Carter gave a shout out to all the girls who assisted: Bev, Gloria, Gracie, and Karen. We seem to have lots of extra cups; some cracked and have been donated to Osage art teachers. We probably have enough cups to do the same next fall. Included in the cup are pamphlets from DKG International and from our Tau group. Buddy Packs update: Bev Kincade reminded us that she is on the Central MO Food Bank advisory committee. She mentioned that Osage has added numerous students this year to the point the extra food is definitely needed. Many families are in extreme need. The help is greatly appreciated. New Business: Membership recommendations should be submitted for the February vote. Trying to build our membership is a big part of our strategic focus plan. Program: Amendment 3: Wanting to give the group thoughts on the logistics of this amendment, Broeker began the discussion from the MRTA on what we need to do: a. stand up and speak up, b. let your voice be heard, c. be social and stay connected, d. show up to vote. Broeker then shared a letter published in the Jefferson City Tribune written by a retired teacher. Colleen Abbott shared information she gathered at a local Lion s Club meeting concerning Amendment 3. Educators are fearful voters will see only the word tenure and vote yes. It is a lot more than tenure. If this would become a constitutional amendment, this would be very difficult to change. (continued on page 3)

TAU 3 October Minutes continued The book exchange and silent auction took place. A big thank you was given to our hostesses Connie Wyrick and Collen Abbott. Announcements: Broeker gave us an update on the progression of our Tau website. There are plans for us to have the February meeting at Nichols Career Center to meet with our website designing student. We can offer our insight. The next meeting will be the Mid-MO Council Meeting information will be forthcoming through email. We will be hosting this again in 2016, and Debbie Ferguson has volunteered to chair that event. Reminder: the Delta State Convention is April 10-12. Broeker presented Horner with a copy of the inspiring book, A Teacher s Wisdom. The meeting was adjourned and our Grace song was sung.
