We hope to develop a strong, foundation to keep the national and global citizenship of our community alive. Of the events planned for 2003 we hope our members maintain their friendships that were cultivated on campus to continue throughout the years to come. It won't be long before 2003 will be in the past and for the future we are already looking for-ward. We are in our early stages but this is what has been slated for 2004: Summer abroad - Travel to Europe The funding of two scholarships In the time our new executive board has been in office, we have established a very intense set of goals and had good success in implementing them. I would like to thank our very active board members on their ongoing support to the board in helping to keep our Marycrest community updated with semi-annual newsletters, the Marycrest Alumni Web site, and other special Alumni gatherings. Please send us your comments or questions and especially your e-mail address. Marycrest to be transformed into senior housing A Davenport developer has acquired Marycrest International University and plans to convert the 20-acre campus into housing for senior citizens. Chris Ales of Signature Holding Corp. purchased the campus' 10 buildings and grounds, including the two mansions, for $2.25 million last fall, according to city property records. The property was assessed last year at $12.8 million. Proceeds from the sale went to the Japan-based Teikyo Yamanashi Education and Welfare Fund, which bought Marycrest in 1990. Chris and Lisa Ales Signature Holding plans to turn the buildings into a mixture of low-income, assisted living, and market-rate apartments for seniors. The first phase of the projects will turn Rohlman and Lawlor halls into 50 units of apartments (2-bedroom). Plans include installing an elevator and atrium between the two. In the second phase, Upham Hall will be converted into 30 below-market rate apartments. Petersen Mansion and West Hall will be renovated in a third phase. Petersen will become a community area, or gathering place for all the residents. West will house additional market rate apartments. Petersen Mansion will house the leasing office. Signature Holding recently received $555,630 in tax credits from the Iowa Finance Authority for the $5.7 million redevelopment project. The gym already is being leased for indoor soccer leagues. Behind the BGB Sports Complex project is Marycrest graduates Brian Schubert and Greg Cotton, as well as Bob Cotton. Marycrest grad Jon Mannall was hired to run the complex. Signature Holding also is talking with senior service agencies about renting out the nursing building for office space. 2002 Gifts We want to give thanks to our current members: The Crest Gift: Laura Marchiori-Brandt Patron: Susan Albrecht-Felt; Linda Eli; Susan Shinners
