employee of the month Short Work Bio Kim Ditton Kim joined CBHA in August of 2007, she has been with the company for nine years. She has worked in the nursing field for 13 years, after graduating from the University of Portland in 2003. However, Kim did not always know she wanted to be a nurse. She realized her passion for nursing when a high school friend asked her to volunteer with her at the local hospital. It was during her time volunteering that she realized she had a passion for nursing, especially working with the pediatric population. Before volunteering at the hospital Kim wanted to be a preschool teacher. Kim has always been an RN while working at CBHA, but her job duties over the years have changed. She started as a floater working with all providers and then worked with Dr. Aduan for five years in pediatrics. Recently Kim s duties have changed as she transitioned to a charge nurse. She now handles triage patients, walk-ins, immunizations, and vaccines regularly along with many other duties. Why She Won Kim acts as a charge nurse at three of the CBHA clinics. She uses her years of experience to assist staff and providers daily, especially in reference to pediatrics. Vaccine coordination, managing the nebulizer program, managing synagis and other specialty medication programs, auditing well child recalls, and troubleshooting errors in the state vaccine website are all reasons Kim excels at her job. She has a great work ethic and pays close attention to detail in all she does. Kim is also very flexible with scheduling and often volunteers to cover in The Scoop Kim has three children Jazmine (7yrs.), Brenden (6yrs.), and Amber (17mo.) with her husband Shawn. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her kids. She especially enjoys baking with her little ones. The Ditton family likes hockey and enjoys going to Tri City Americans game together. Kim was extremely surprised when Estella told her that she had won employee of the month. She had no idea she was going to be nominated! She would like to Thank Estella for nominating her and all of the nurse managers for the support they provide the nursing staff. She would also like to thank her co-workers for being so great to work with! 2 Vital Signs

D.I.M.E. AWARD Driven Individual Modeling Excellence Congratulations Valexa Hernandez Angel! I believe Valexa is long due for this award. She always gives 110% of herself when she is at work. She always goes out of her way to help anyone, whether that be a patient or an employee asking for help. When I first stated, learning medical and dental was a big struggle for me. I knew I could rely on her to give me answers and would go above and beyond to help me understand the why s of dental. When she left to Collection Counselor for 6 months, I would always be calling her for questions whether it be billing or dental. She always gave me an answers and if she didn t know the answer, she would find the answer for me. When her 6 months were up for Collection Counselor, she trained me as I was selected as the next Collection Counselor. During the training she was very patient explaining every process. I even witnessed how she would take the extra time with patients to ensure that patients understood their bills and were not confused. I look forward to seeing her get this award. please welcome... Dr. Gabe Barrio! Dr. Barrio grew up in Northern California. He graduated from Stanford University Medical School and also did a pediatrics residency there. He considers himself a water person coming from several generations of Navy people on both sides of his family. We go back several generations in Mexico, he said. I love being around water and have always lived close to water. My mother s great grandfather was a pirate so we have salt water in our veins! And yet here he is living in Eastern Washington! Granted, we have lakes and rivers; however, there are no oceans close by!! Dr. Barrio found himself wondering who might live in Eastern Washington as he made his way over the mountains through Central WA and into Othello for an interview. Turns out he does! It s what you guys have built here with these amazing clinics in this shrub steppe landscape that has led me here! He admits to having to receive a number of phone calls from CBHA before he agreed to take a look. It had been a longtime dream of Dr. Barrio s to serve farmworkers and their families in a community with a largely Hispanic population. I grew up speaking Spanish and I wanted to work with a Spanish speaking population. Spanish was my first language. I discovered an amazing rural health clinic system here. Even though he will miss the practice he co-owned at Pediatric Associates of Whidbey Island, he is excited to begin this new chapter in his life. My wife, Kali, and I bought a house at Othello s golf course surrounded by trees so we can have some shade in our new environment at least until we adapt to Eastern WA living. Dr. Barrio and his wife, Kali, like to play tennis, and go snow skiing as well as sailing. They also like to cook; favorite dishes are Aloo-gobi and Samoza both East Indian dishes made with spices, vegetables and sometimes meat. As a family we all like to go hiking together, he said. Dr. Barrio lists wood working as a hobby. It s really more than a hobby for me. I love to build things from scratch. I raised a timber frame barn using leverage and manual tools and attached it to my house on Whidbey Island, he said. He checked out the internet and looked on the Army Corp of Engineers Website where they detailed things that can be built using ropes and pulleys. His next project is to build a 16 foot sailboat. He already has the plans and can t wait to get started. Dr. Barrio and Kali have four children. They have a 17 year old son who is still in high school, another son and daughter in college and a 23 year old daughter who has graduated from college and joined the working world. Dr. Barrio s sense of humor shines through when he says, Our 17 year old son is the only one of our four children who doesn t know what he wants to pursue in college. He s a happy guy who loves to play basketball. We tell him you should be thinking about what you want to take in college and he replies that he needs all of his energy to play basketball. Dr. Barrio looks forward to getting acquainted with staff and patients alike in his new medical practice setting. 5 Vital Signs
