Marshall contacted me on radio and told me he was going to abort. He said that one engine was out and a prop was running away and he could not feather it. He then pulled out of formation. It is desired that casualty status of personnel referred to be reviewed. a. In cases where men are declared to be dead, if the commanding officer believes evidence to be reasonably conclusive, appropriate corrected battle casualty report will be submitted. If evidence is not deemed sufficient, then a statement will be made of reasons for presumption of survival. b. If place of casualty shown on original battle casualty report does not agree with statement, corrected report should be submitted for those men still missing. c. Personnel should be reported Captured or Interned only when evidence shows actual incarceration in an established prison camp or safe arrival in a neutral country. d. First two men (Commander & Sundquist) hit in deep water about a mile and a half from any land. Chutes were seen in the water but no activity of the men. DeRosa landed in deep water also but there were a few trees in the area so might have got out of water. Enemy were all about the area so possibly captured if not drowned. Dick wasn t seen by any of us but civilians told us that an officer was taken to the wrecked plane and questioned after which he was shot. Civilians also told us that 3 of the men were shot at in their descent. They weren t heard of by us and we were in the area for 12 days. SE of Kutina, Yugo., from 5 10 kilometers. /s/ LeRoy M. Flood water from a river near Kutina, Yugoslavia. The water was cold. Kutina is about 50 miles southeast of Zagrab, Yugoslavia. We were headed in that direction when we bailed out. Commander, first; Sundquist, second; Martina, third; Hill, fourth. That is as much as I know about the bailing out. I saw the chutes hit the water but when I hit the tree & was rescued, I only found the camera man (Martina) on a 5 by 20 piece of land cold & blue in the face. He didn t know me. After changing his wet clothes & giving him my flying tags & massaging his face, arms & legs, he came to about 2 hours later. It s a damn wonder he didn t have a bad cold.
