B.Tech. programme relaunched in new Avataar Orientation Programme was held on 18 July 2010 for e new Batch of e revamped part-time B.Tech.- Iustrial Engg. & Management (Spl. in TQM) at e School's Mohali campus. Mr. AK Goel, Plant Director, Philips Electronics Iia Ltd., Mohali was e Chief Guest of e programme. 71 working Diploma holders, from 48 different organisations wi experience ranging from 2 to 20 years, have enrolled in is batch. As per new university regulations, e B.Tech.-Iustrial Engg. & Management programme has been converted into a regular, 8 semester programme, delivered in part-time mode, wi weeke classes. CEO presents paper at International Quality Congress at University of Toronto, Canada Mr. Manish Trehan, CEO of e School, presented a paper titled TQM Journey of a Government-run Milk Producing Cooperative in Iia at e 2 Canadian Quality rd Congress held from 23-25 August at University of Toronto, Canada. The paper focused on e adoption of TQM techniques by MilkFed, Punjab. It demonstrated how TQM principles can be used to create an organisation-wide environment of continuous improvement in a cooperative sector organisation, seeped in tradition a facing numerous challenges. It is notewory at Milkfed has saved over Rs. 4 crore per annum by implementing 14 improvement project during e first phase of its TQM journey. The paper highlighted at e project-by-project approach, used in conjunction wi e basic 7 QC tools, is an excellent approach for building a culture of continuous improvement, which is universally applicable across all sectors. It has many important lessons for organisations which are starting eir quality improvement journey. PGSTE appointed Lean Manufacturing Consultant for MSMEs of Mohali & Baddi To achieve sustainable rates of grow a enhance eir competitiveness, SMEs in e norern region are gearing up to apply various lean manufacturing techniques uer a scheme initiated by e Union Ministry of Micro, Small a Medium Enterprises (MSME). The techniques focus on reducing seven types of waste, including over-production, inventory, transportation, over-processing a defects. SMEs at manufacture baroom fittings a accessories in Mohali have come togeer to form a mini cluster, uer e lean manufacturing competitiveness scheme introduced by e Union Ministry of MSME. A similar cluster has been formed at Baddi (Himachal Pradesh) by SMEs at manufacture engineering goods. The consultancy division of PGSTE has been appointed lean manufacturing consultant for e Mohali a Baddi clusters. The programme was kick-started on 7 August 2010 for e Mohali cluster by Mr. Vijay Kapoor (Principal Consultant) a Mr. Naresh K. Chawla (General Manager, Consultancy Services) of PGSTE.

Certified Six Sigma Green Belt programmes for corporates The School has uertaken Six Sigma Green Belt programmes for e following companies: a) Godrej & Boyce, Mohali Showing its tireless fervour towards continual improvement, Godrej a Boyce Manufacturing Company Limited, Mohali kicked off a Six Sigma Green Belt certification programme for e junior a middle managers, which is being coucted by PGSTE. The programme was inaugurated by Sh. Anil Rijhwani, General Manager, Godrej & Boyce, Mohali on 20 August 2010. Total of 23 participants are uergoing is training. USP of e programme is at, apart from e routine Six Sigma's statistical & managerial skills, participants are being trained in Minitab-15 to provide an additional fillip to eir data analysis capabilities. b) Nectar Lifesciences Ltd., Derabassi The only mantra to combat competition is to learn new skills. Nectar Lifesciences Ltd. is also following is doctrine a engaged PGSTE for coucting Green Belt certification programme starting from 14 July 2010. A total of 25 participants from e middle a senior management are uergoing is training. The programme is specifically tailor made to suit e requirement of an Active Pharma Ingredients/Intermediate manufacturer. c) Guru Nanak Auto Enterprises (GNA), Jalahar Auto component manufacturers are reeling uer e pressure of rising input costs a e survival kit is to reduce e defects, variations a e buffers in e manufacturing processes. Management of GNA approached PGSTE to train 30 of eir employees in six sigma meodology. The objective of e management was to develop a culture of data driven problem solving. The programme, which started in September 2009, was inaugurated by eir MD, Mr. Jagdish Singh. Two teams have already completed e projects. The annual savings from ese projects are Rs. 54 lac a Rs. 11 lac respectively. Oer two projects are expected to be completed by October 2010. Six Sigma Black Belt: 2 Batch nears completion st Seco batch of Six Sigma Black Belt commenced on 21 May 2010 at e institute s Mohali campus. 19 executives from 13 different organisations including Federal Mogul Goetze (I) Ltd., Gates Iia, GNA Enterprises, Titan a IDS Infotech participated in e programme. The programme is being anchored by PGSTE's own Six Sigma Black Belt professionals, Mr. Vinod Bhardwaj a Mr. Naresh K Chawla. The final project rd presentations a e certification examination was held on 23 October 2010. The estimated savings from e nine projects, being uertaken by e participants in eir respective organisations, are expected to be more an Rs. 4 crore.

NWQT finalists on a winning spree at Qimpro Convention, 2010 Three teams from e Nor, who were e finalists at e Nor-West QualTech Awards 2009 (held in March, 2010 at rd PGSTE) won e prestigious national QualTech Prize 2010 in e 22 Qimpro Convention held at Mumbai on 23-24 September, 2010. Godrej & Boyce-Mohali, Secure Meters-Barotiwala a Moser Baer-Noida were judged winners in e Improvement Category for Manufacturing. A total of 15 teams from various organisations made it to e finals of e competition. The winning teams competed against prestigious organisations like Apollo Tyres, Godrej a Boyce (Satara), Hialco Iustries (Copper Division), Hiustan Zinc, Larsen & Turbo, Piramal HealCare, Reliance Iustries, Reliance Infrastructure, Sterlite Iustries etc. This is a fantastic achievement for e teams from e Nor-West a will give a tremeous boost to e TQM movement in is region. Forcoming programmes a) Nor-West QualTech Awards 2010 (NWQT) For e past six years, Nor-West QualTech (NWQT) Convention has been a platform for recognition of team excellence in quality. NWQT Awards are a tribute to e efforts of e middle management in an organisation's pursuit for excellence. The awards, instituted by PTU's Gian Jyoti School of TQM & Entrepreneurship in 2004, are presented after a rigorous process of evaluation to improvement teams at are recognized as best-in-class. PGSTE has been at e forefront of e Quality Movement in Nor-West Iia. The School has initiated several initiatives to promote TQM culture in e region. NWQT awards are one such initiative. These awards have acquired a lot of prestige in e Nor-West region. More an 200 teams from leading organisations have participated in last six conventions. The forcoming NWQT convention will be a two-day event, which will be held on 24 & 25 February, 2011.
