Welcome PrevetioSummit 2013 Advacig America s Oral Health From the Executive Director of the America Detal Associatio O behalf of its 157,000 members, the America Detal Associatio (ADA) welcomes you to the 2013 Prevetio Summit: Advacig America s Oral Health. Prevetio is the corerstoe ad bedrock upo which the ADA has built its brad, its image ad most importatly, its coveat with the atio to be the most trusted oral health authority. I its discussios leadig up to the decisio to covee a Summit, ADA ackowledged that oral disparities caot be fixed simply by performig more procedures. The detal health crisis is caused by a failure to prevet disease. We caot drill, fill ad extract our way out of this crisis without a fudametally differet approach; oe that accetuates disease prevetio. I order to make a impact, ADA recogized it would eed to brig together idividuals from multiple disciplies that have a commitmet to prevetio i both cliical ad populatio-based settigs to create a commo visio for actio. As the coveer of the Summit, ADA idetified eleve stakeholder groups ad a key represetative from each group. These represetatives met i November 2012 ad took owership for plaig the Summit icludig developmet of the ageda as well as the selectio of participats ad speakers. Durig the past year, this plaig group has bee meetig bi-weekly via coferece calls. ADA would like to recogize those idividuals who have give freely of their time to esure the success of this Summit. Davis, Ph.D. a pioeer i the field of Health Literacy is a Professor of Medicie ad Pediatrics at Louisiaa State Uiversity Health Scieces Ceter i Shreveport (LSUHSC-S). For the past 25 years, she has led a iterdiscipliary team ivestigatig the impact of patiet literacy o health ad healthcare. Semial achievemets iclude developmet of the Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy i Medicie (REALM) ad creatio of user-friedly patiet educatio ad provider traiig materials that are beig used atioally. Hayagreeva Rao Professor, Stadord Uiversity Professor Rao has published widely i the fields of maagemet ad sociology ad studies the social ad cultural causes of orgaizatioal chage. I his research, he studies three sub-processes of orgaizatioal chage: a) creatio of ew social structures, b) the trasformatio of existig social structures, ad c) the dissolutio of existig social structures. His recet work ivestigates the role of social movemets as motors of orgaizatioal chage i professioal ad orgaizatioal fields. His research has bee published i jourals such as the Admiistrative Sciece Quarterly, America Joural of Sociology, America Sociological Review, Academy of Maagemet Joural, Orgaizatio Sciece ad Strategic Maagemet Joural. He is also the author of Market Rebels: How Activists Make or Break Radical Iovatio, Priceto Uiversity Press. 2009. She has served o Health Literacy Advisory Boards for both the America Medical Associatio ad the America College of Physicias (ACP). Curretly she is a member of the Healthy People 2020 Health Literacy/Health Commuicatio Sectio ad serves as a health literacy advisor to the FDA. Dr. Davis chaired Louisiaa s statewide Health Literacy Task Force, the first legislatively madated health literacy group i the atio. She received the Louisiaa Public Health Associatio s Fouders Award for Sigificat Achievemet i Public Health Research. As a frequet speaker at atioal cofereces, she has itegrated her research fidigs ito practical lessos for providers ad policy makers. Dr. Davis is the Health Literacy Pricipal Ivestigator (PI) o a NIH grat for the Louisiaa Cliical ad Traslatioal Sciece Ceter, a uprecedeted collaborative effort amog eight academic istitutios i LA. She is PI o a five year NCI health literacy itervetio to icrease regular breast ad CRC screeig amog patiets i Federally Qualified Health Ceters. Buildig o this work she ad colleagues from LSU were recetly awarded a ACS grat to evaluate follow up strategies to improve regular CRC screeig i rural cliics i the state. Dr Davis is also workig with ivestigators at Northwester ad Emory o AHRQ fuded studies to improve patiet uderstadig ad actual use of prescriptio medicatio labels i Eglish ad Spaish. Alog with a team from the Uiversity of North Carolia ad Uiversity of Califoria-Sa Fracisco she has bee fuded by the ACP to develop ad test practical self-maagemet guides ad videos for patiets with diabetes, COPD, coroary artery disease, obesity, ad rheumatoid arthritis.
