Reports from members (written reports invited) 7a Presentation "Case studies by different calculation tools and simplification of calculation scheme" Dr. Shimizu presented case studies on CFP studies conducted in Japan including studies on a book, a magazine, etc. using different calculators (N 0159). The results were very close despite the fact that some of the component results such as production were quite different. Dr. Shimizu recommended that we in the printing industry should participate or even lead the discussion about carbon footprint calculations for e-books.

This will help ensure that the other industry doesn t fix the rules for calculations to the detriment of our industry. Action Item 12-04: Shimizu to prepare a comparison of e-book with printed equivalent for circulation prior to the next meeting 7b Presentation "Proposal on methodology regarding synoptic table and communication framework" Dr. Nakamura reviewed a presentation (N0160) that had been distributed prior to the meeting regarding an example of a carbon footprint study for data collection conducted in Japan. He highlighted the boundary for calculations that comply with ISO 16759 vs. a Lifecycle study. He then discussed a checklist that can be used by printers to understand what needs to be included in the study. He concluded that the data collection and system boundary can be included in an improved Annex D. He then discussed the definition of a print media product relative to package products. He proposed that the molding process and finishing for these products be included in ISO 16759. He discussed the comparison of communication items between ISO/DIS 14067 and ISO 14044. ISO 14044 contains all of the requirements in 14067. He suggested a way of dealing with CFP disclosure report, CFP performance tracking, CFP-PCR and CFP programme (operator). Regarding the elimination of Annex B & C, Ms. Brunner stated that both annexes are informative. She felt people need guidance on functional units and would like to see Annex B stay in the document. She agreed that C&D should be combined. Action 12-05: Orf/Nakamura to reformat Annex D to conform to ISO requirements Action 12-06: Brunner to investigate a liaison with ISO TC 46 through WG 12 of TC 130 Action 12-07: Brunner to provide an introductory paragraph to Annex D by April 27 7c Presentation "Challenges with Product Carbon Footprint Comparisons" (Tim Strecker) Mr. Smythe presented a report provided by Mr. Strecker (N 161) in his absence. He stated that the general point, as stated in the presentation, is not to include comparisons in ISO 16759 because the data collected is generic and is often inconsistent and inaccurate resulting in large differences between print media products. His recommendation is to add an annex to cover this which includes the following process for comparison: Data collection PCF calculation PCF result After discussion the working group agreed to add a normative annex with the removal of the mention of CFP comparisons. Action 12-08: Brunner to draft an annex regarding production comparisons based on Strecker presentation (N161) by April 27 8. Further discussion of the following comments: 8a US 099 clarification of meaning of avoided productions This reference has been removed from the document.

8b DE 090 Calculations of energy use and reporting according to 14067 (6.3.9.3) Members were generally content with calculations of energy and did not feel the document needed to be changed. 8c AU 131 NWI to have a print industry specific standard based on an implementation of ISO 14044 It was agreed that this is a good idea but that ISO 16759 should be completed before commencing further work. 9. ISO 16759 Next steps It was agreed to submit ISO/DIS 16759 with changes made from the resolution of comments and during the meeting to the TC130 Secretariat with a request to initiate the DIS ballot (5 month ballot) with comments to be discussed at the next meeting in October (Chicago). Action 12-09: Orf to prepare ISO/DIS 16759 incorporating changes from for submission as a DIS ballot. Action 12-10: Brunner to submit a request to TC130 to initiate a liaison with TC122 (Packaging) by June 15 10. Review of new Action Items # Action Item 12 01 Brunner to contact the Finnish delegation with a recommendation TC6 develop a document addressing the clarification of ambiguities in ISO 16759 for the paper industry by May 31 12 02 Klein to provide alternative wording for terms and definitions compared to ISO 14067 by May 31 12 03 Penfold to cross reference terms and definitions with WD 16763 and report any changes by April 27 12 04 Shimizu to prepare a comparison of e-book with printed equivalent for circulation prior to the next meeting 12 05 Orf/Nakamura to reformat Annex D to conform to ISO requirements 12 06 Brunner to investigate a liaison with ISO TC 46 through WG 12 of TC 130 12 07 Brunner to provide an introductory paragraph to Annex D by April 27 12 08 Brunner to draft an annex regarding production comparisons based on Strecker presentation (N161) by April 27 12 09 Orf to prepare ISO/DIS 16759 incorporating changes made during meeting for submission as a DIS ballot by May 1 12 10 Brunner to submit a request to TC130 to initiate a liaison with TC 122 (Packaging) by June 15 11. Future meeting plans It was agreed to request one day for WG11 to meet in October 2012. 12.
