Los Diablos, founded in 1984 is a chapter of the Arizona State University Alumni Association and an affiliate of the ASU Foundation. Los Diablos is composed of Chicano/Latino Alumni who, in partnership with ASU, the corporate sector, community organizations, and dedicated individuals, are united in their commitment to the educational and economic development of the Chicano/Latino community. This philosophy is encouraged in all Los Diablos scholarship applicants and recipients. Los Diablos primary goal is to provide financial assistance and support to outstanding Arizona students who are committed to the Chicano/Latino community and who choose to attend and graduate from ASU. In addition to providing scholarships, we assist our scholars through our Puentes (Bridges) program, in which each scholar is matched with a Los Diablos board member who serves as a mentor for the upcoming academic school year. As mentors, we actively encourage academic success and expose our scholars to potential career paths. Board members become the scholars advocates and liaisons to the university and community at large. Los Diablos also demands academic accountability from our scholars. We attribute this philosophy and the Puentes Program as reasons why Los Diablos Scholars have historically had a higher graduation success rate than the rest of the ASU student population at large. To date, over 2,000 Los Diablos scholarships, valued at a total of over $3 million have been awarded. In 2009-2010, each Los Diablos scholarship was worth the value of 1 year s tuition, or approximately $5,750.50. 1 In 2010-2011, Los Diablos will provide scholarships in amounts varying from a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum of the cost of full tuition. Scholarship funds may be used for educational expenses including tuition and fees, housing, books and other costs of attendance. The Los Diablos Scholarship is more than just tuition assistance. Los Diablos is a comprehensive program that includes mentoring and networking components as well as service projects designed to promote our mission of providing scholarship opportunities to deserving students. This will require an unwavering commitment from our scholars to attend/participate/volunteer in various Los Diablos activities during and in preparation for the academic school year. These events are not only considered requirements in order to be considered for scholarship renewal, they are also excellent opportunities to meet and thank our generous donors, network, develop leadership skills and have fun. As a Los Diablos Scholar, you will be a partner in continuing the legacy of this program. 1 This number was based on an average of 2 different scholarship amounts that were awarded to Los Diablos Scholars based on their respective tuition costs. Future scholarships may be valued differently depending on each student s cost of tuition. Los Diablos 2010-2011 Scholarship Application Instructions iii

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS AND GUIDELINES ALL applicants will be evaluated on an equal balance of the following 3 factors: 1. Display of a legitimate need for financial assistance 2. Display of a commitment to academic excellence 3. Display of a consistent commitment to involvement and/or leadership in the Chicano/Latino community, especially in community service activities. If selected for a scholarship, ALL scholars will agree to the following guidelines: 1. Scholars will agree to complete a Diablo core set of classes, if not already included in your graduation requirements including an advanced English course or business writing course; an advanced communication or public speaking course; and a course on Chicano/Latino culture or history. ALL applicants must also meet the following general requirements: 1. Be a graduate of an Arizona high school or a graduate of an Arizona community college or current ASU student. You must also be classified as an Arizona resident for tuition purposes (residency is determined at the time of application to ASU). Arizona law requires students receiving resident tuition and ASU institutional scholarships, including this one, to demonstrate lawful presence in the United States. 2. Be admitted to Arizona State University as a full-time undergraduate degree seeking student. 3. Maintain enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student. 2 4. Maintain a cumulative, un-weighted G.P.A. of at least 3.0. 5. This scholarship may NOT be combined with other ASU institutional merit scholarships (i.e., the President s Scholarship, the Maroon & Gold Scholarship, etc.) 3 For a complete list of these institutional merit scholarships, visit http://students.asu.edu/scholarships/freshmen. In the event you are selected for more than 1 ASU institutional merit scholarship, you may be automatically awarded the 1 scholarship with the highest dollar amount only. This scholarship may be used toward educational expenses including tuition and fees, housing, books and other costs of attendance. Accepting this scholarship may result in changes to your ASU financial aid package. 6. Dependents of ASU employees who qualify for a tuition subsidy are not eligible. 2 Full-time enrollment constitutes a minimum of 24 credit-hours in an academic year, however, you are strongly encouraged to complete 30 credit hours by the conclusion of the spring semester to remain on track to graduate within 4 years. ASU winter term courses as well as ASU-sponsored study-abroad courses count toward full-time credit-hour requirements. Summer session and consortium agreement courses, Advanced Placement credits, and transfer credits from other colleges/universities DO NOT satisfy full-time credit-hour requirements for renewal eligibility. 3 For a complete list of these institutional merit scholarships, visit http://students.asu.edu/scholarships/freshmen Los Diablos 2010-2011 Scholarship Application Instructions iv
