A Future Vision for Textiles & Clothing & EU Support for Research & Innovation Lutz Walter Secretary of the ETP Governing Council R&D Manager of Euratex Textile Industry Forum, Vila Nova de Famalicão, 25 Nov. 2010
ETP The rationale of its existence Industry-led initiative launched in 2004 Mission: Ensure long-term competitiveness EU Textile & Clothing Industry through collaborative, market-oriented research & innovation Key-objectives: Establishment effective EU-wide expert network Development Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) Implementing the SRA (e.g. Projects, Financing) Bringing results to the industry Promoting a positive, innovative industry image
Vision 2020 Textile Innovation for a better Europe Global Growth Markets Buildings & Interiors Protection & Healthcare Mobility & Energy Ressource-efficiency & environment protection Fashion & Creativity
Future Vision Major Long-Term Industry Trends Move from commodities towards specialty products from high-tech processes; fibres, filaments, fabrics and final products with highly functional, purpose-targeted properties based on high tech processes etc. Establishment and expansion of textiles as material of choice in many sectors and application fields (transport systems, construction, medical applications, consumer electronics ) End era of mass manufacture of textile products, move towards the new industrial era characterised by customisation, personalisation, as well as flexible, ondemand production coupled with intelligent logistics, distribution and services Sustainability & CSR: ensuring resource efficiency and low ecologic impact in production and promoting consumer health and safety and full life cycle approaches in products
Strategic Research Agenda Implementation of 8 Priority Research Themes (2005-09) 1. New speciality fibres and fibre-composites 2. Functionalisation of textile materials and related processes 3. Bio-based materials, biotechnologies and environmentally friendly textile processing 4. New textile products for improved human performance (Protection, healthcare, sports & wellness) 5. New textile products for innovative technical applications (construction, transport, energy, geo, agro, industrial ) 6. Smart textiles and clothing 7. Mass customisation & new design and product development concepts and technologies 8. Integrated quality and life cycle management concepts Textile Research Priorities Identified in the Strategic Research Agenda

European Networking Results - Largest European-wide textile research network of industry & academia (650+ members) - TEPPIES System to build EU textile research projects more effectively and successfully - Well-established annual conference as central meeting point, last edition in March 2010 in Brussels, next on 31/3-1/4/2011 - ERA-Net project CrossTexNet should lead to better regional/national programme coordination across Europe
Cross-sector Collaboration Objectives: - Textile ETP as highly regarded partner for joint research strategy development with any related sector - Professional communication of joint research strategies to EC and other policy makers Successful examples: ManuTex PPE Consumer Goods
Practical Advice EU Funding Programmes Main EU Research Funding Programme is the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) 2007-2013, 50+ billion, composed of 10 thematic programmes & several horizontal programmes Most relevant thematic part of FP7 for textile/clothing research is NMP Programme (Nanotechnologies, Materials, Production Technologies), approx. 500 million/year Opportunities also exist in other parts of FP7 (e.g. SME research programmes, Environment, ICT, Marie Curie-IAPP...) Each sub-programme usually publishes 1 call for proposals per year, submission deadlines 3-4 months later, info at www.cordis.eu Average funding levels: 50% of project costs for large companies, 75% for SME s & research organisations Average time from project submission to project start 1 year
Practical Advice Joining EU Projects TEPPIES System: The ETP s system to support EU project preparation Available to all registered ETP experts Excellent results during 2007-2009 Ensures transparency & confidentiality Positively viewed by the EU Next call expected in June 2010 for NMP programme 2011
Practical Advice Joining European Networks - The key to successful collaboration at EU level is KNOWING PEPOLE & KNOWING WHAT s HAPPENING - The European Technology Platform is an excellent place to get to know people to learn about events, projects, funding programmes... - EU research projects are an excellent way to experiment with collaboration in a pre-competitive environment and at very low financial risk, current calls just closing, next calls in mid-2011 participate in the TEPPIES system - Look for an innovative technological solution to a company problem? Watch for the launch of the European Textile Technologies Marketplace coming soon.
The Future? - Europe 2020 Innovation Union FP8... - Importance of research & innovation maintained - More focus on big societal challenges (health, climate change, energy, food, water...) opportunities for textile solutions - More combination of EU & national/regional funding learning from ERA-Net experience, overcoming financial challenges - More combination of research & innovation closer to market, public private partnerships - More focus on non-technological innovation & creative industries expoiting the Consumer Goods initiative A lot of work for the European Technology Platform to get a maximum out of this for the textile & clothing industry
