Funding Opportunities in Horizon 2020 Focus on PhD candidates and postdocs Service Center Research and Technology Transfer,
Agenda 1. Horizon 2020: The basics 2. Programmes for individual researchers 2.1 Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions (MSCA) 2.2 European Research Grant (ERC) 3. Collaborative Projects
1. Horizon 2020: The basics Horizon 2020 is the 8th research framework programme of the EU. Timeframe: 2014-2020 Implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy appr. 77 billion Euros over 7 years Main goals: Economic growth and generation of jobs Competitive European economy through innovation with respect to products, production processes and services
1. Horizon 2020: The basics Bottom-up programmes: no indication of a specific topic, open to all disciplines ERC grants, MSC Actions Proposal / project of an individual researcher, in cooperation with host organisation no other partners necessary Top-down programmes: topic is given, project needs to fit in Collaborative projects Consortium of at least 3 partners from 3 different EUcountries, call-specific further cooperations (industry, third countries)
2. Programmes for individual researchers
2.1 Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions Purpose: Promoting (young) researchers mobility General rule of mobility: Applicant must not have stayed in target country for more than 12 months within last 3 years Individual and institutional actions Goals: Attracting high potentials to Europe Supporting European researchers Enhancing knowledge, networks, excellence of European researchers
European Fellowship (EF) MSCA- Individual Fellowships EF Reintegration Panel EF Career Restart Panel Global Fellowship (GF) Research stay in a host organisation located in a EU country (including associated countries). Open to researchers from all over the world For European researchers returning to Europe from a third country For European researchers after a break (of >/= 12 months) to resume a career in research Research stay in a host organisation located in a third country. Open to European researchers / residents of a EUcountry for at least 5 years Duration: 12 24 months Special mobility rule: Researcher must not have lived / worked in the target country for more than 3 years within last 5 years! Duration: 24 36 months (last 12 months return phase) Researchers with research experience of at least 4 years / postdocs Living allowance, mobility, lump sum for research, management, overhead Next deadline: September 12, 2018 http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h2020/topics/msca-if- 2018.html
Excellence Impact Implementation Quality, innovative aspects and credibility of the research Enhancing research- and innovation-related human resources, skills, and working conditions to realise the potential of individuals and to provide new career perspectives Overall coherence and effectiveness of the work plan, including appropriateness of the allocation of tasks and resources Clarity and quality of transfer of knowledge/training for the development of researcher in light of the research objectives Effectiveness of the proposed measures for communication and results dissemination Appropriateness of the management structures and procedures, including quality management and risk management Quality of the supervision and the hosting arrangements Appropriateness of the institutional environment (infrastructure) Capacity of the researcher to reach or re-enforce a position of professional maturity in research Competences, experience and complementarity of the participating organisations and institutional commitment 50% 30% 20% Service Center Research and Technology Transfer, University of Würzburg, Angela Esgen
2.1 MSCA Proposal Part A: Administrative data Part B: 10 pages for description of excellence, impact, implementation + CV / infrastructure description etc. Important to describe: What project? Why now and here? Benefit for young researcher and host organisation? Feasibility and innovation?
2.1 MSCA - Summary In summary: Interesting, innovative research project Adequate host organisation, experienced in EU programmes Scientific excellence of researcher and supervisor Convincing proposal - and good luck: competitive programme with 8 10% success rates More information: http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/
