Apply NOW for the STUDENT DESIGN & ENGINEERING AWARD 2015. Enter by 30 April 2015 (deadline for applications) and your innovative idea could take home our prize! Call for entries STUDENT DESIGN & ENGINEERING AWARD for Rapid Manufacturing Award Additive and rapid manufacturing processes are no longer in their infancy their unique features have already helped them to conquer the market and win over end users. Alongside the traditional engineering sectors such as the aerospace industry, Additive Manufacturing processes are now also being used in medical technology, gastronomy and the toy industry, lifting the limits on imagination and individuality. The STUDENT DESIGN & ENGINEERING AWARD for Rapid Manufacturing, now in its ninth year, will be awarded as part of the Rapid.Tech 2015 event. It offers creative minds the opportunity to take their innovative ideas from an on-screen design to a physical product. We collaborate with design experts, specialists from within the sector and renowned companies to produce a selection of high-quality submissions. This prize represents a unique opportunity to generate interest within the industry and make important contacts. Potential winners of the STUDENT DESIGN & ENGINEERING AWARD are students who focus on Additive Manufacturing processes while also taking advantage of the resulting opportunities to customize products using rapid manufacturing processes. These students provide an inspiration for this forward-looking technology. Organiser The organiser of the competition is Messe Erfurt GmbH, the host of the rapid technologies trade fair and user conference which enables specific technical expertise to be shared within the sector. The whole spectrum of these technologies, innovations and trends will be on display at the event from 10 to 11 June 2015. Alongside the practical trade fair, Rapid.Tech provides a forum for users, service providers, manufacturers and scientists. Entrants Students of any subject within the fields of design, architecture, construction, engineering and technology are invited to enter, as are young professionals who have graduated within the past 2 years. There are no restrictions on the entries. Anything can be submitted, from projects that have already been publicised to brand new ideas. The only condition is that the work must have started during the entrant s studies. The prize is aimed at those who are focused on Additive Manufacturing processes and the new perspectives they offer for design. Entrants should therefore consider the opportunities that rapid manufacturing processes offer with regard to the customisation of products as part of their submission. Group entries are also permitted. However, no more than three entries may be made per person. 2

Assessment criteria Printed renderings of the key views of the designs with descriptions and substantiation of their particular features will be judged on the following criteria: Quality of implementation Manufacturing only possible with additive technologies, or additive technologies are beneficial to the manufacturing process (differentiation from standard processes) Design appropriate for the material Resource-conserving construction (conservation of materials and machine time) Conception, design, construction Conceptual quality (content, novelty, degree of innovation, product definition) Design quality (originality, consistent and aesthetic design principle) Quality of construction (degree of inventiveness, suitability) High practical benefit, suitable for use Self-explanatory/intuitive to use Relevance Societal relevance (importance for society, meaningfulness) Sustainability of the idea/project Assessment with regard to the current state of the art in technology/knowledge Jury We have assembled an expert jury who are highly dedicated, critical and passionate in their discussions and decisions. The private selection process will take place at Messe Erfurt GmbH in early May 2015. This process will decide which designers products fulfil the assessment criteria for excellent design and which students will receive a monetary prize. Any member directly involved with a submitted entry shall not be allowed to vote. The decision of the jury is final and there is no right of appeal. Winners Winning submissions will be produced free of charge, provided they have not been already, and will be displayed as part of a special exhibition at Rapid.Tech & FabCon 3.D 2015.
