b. Web development CampusNet group DTU web page Facebook page c. Company visit: Delta A/S (December 5th, 2011) On the 5 th of December, we visited Delta A/S in Hørsholm with a group of 24 DTU students. Delta has divisions for optics (thin-film filters, reflectometric sensors, photometric test and calibration), electronics (wireless body-sensors, design and test of integrated circuits) and for a wide range of product quality tests. We were welcomed with a lunch in Delta s canteen, followed by a presentation about the company and a tour through the labs and production facilities. We had the opportunity for discussion with the head of the 3

optics division and several other employees, and learned about opportunities for industry-university collaborations as well as a career in industry. d. Invited lecture On 12 April, the SPIE Student Chapter hosted an invited lecture by Prof. John Dudley, since 2000 head of the Optoelectronics and Photonics research section of the CNRS research institute FEMTO-ST at the University of Franche-Comte in Besancon, France. He gave two exciting talks, titled Nonlinear Fiber Optics: New Fibers - New Opportunities and Best Practice photonics building and sustaining a technical research career. During the lunch break and after the talks, many students took the opportunity for a casual chat with Prof. Dudley. e. Company visit: Global Connect A/S (June 1st, 2012) On the 1 st of June, we visited Global Connect A/S in Taastrup with a group of DTU students, both master and PhDs. Global Connect is one of the leading Danish companies in the field of optical networks with more than 12.000 km of dark fiber deployed between Denmark, Sweden and Germany. Furthermore the company offers data storage with more than 7000 square meters of datacenter. The visit started with a general presentation about the company including an interesting discussion on the main costumers. We then continued with a tour through the datacenter and the company s Network Operation Center (NOC), 4

the central room where the whole network is kept under constant control 24/7. We also had the opportunity for a discussion with the CTO and several other employees, and learned about opportunities for industry-university collaborations as well as a career in industry. f. Leadership Workshop in Brussels (SPIE Photonics Europe) Two members of the SPIE Student Chapter, Sebastian Marschall and Viktoriia Babicheva, took part in the Leadership workshop that was held on 15 April at the Photonics Europe conference in Brussels. From Jean- Luc Doumont, expert in effective scientific communication, we learnt the high art of motivating a team and convincing other people of a cause. During the workshop, during the chapter presentation on the conference and during social activities in the evenings (bowling, laser tag), we had plenty of opportunity to make contact with many other students from universities all around the globe. 5

g. Leadership Workshop in San Diego (SPIE Optics + Photonics) Jiri Cech attended the SPIE Student Chapter Leadership Workshop in San Diego and was a representative of the chapter. The chapter participated in the Student Chapter Exhibition by setting up a booth to display our accomplishments and activities. The representative got some inspirations for outreach activities and future planes. The participation was sponsored by officer travel grant of the SPIE Student Chapter. h. Team-build event: barbeque, August 23 rd, 2012 On August 23 rd a barbeque has been organized between the most active members of a chapter as a way to both socialize and discuss plans for future events in an informal context. 6

4. Planning of chapter activities Organizing of event joint with Lund University Student chapter: university visit, lab tour and so on; Plan of next company visit, autumn 2012, likely Ibsen Photonics; Organizing of joint event during Fotonik Friday Bar; Organizing department barbeque; Joint activity with DTU OSA chapter; Booth at Åbenhus (Open-house) at DTU for Bs/Ms students Experimental activity: on-field game with UV lasers and paints. 5.
