MPVA (3/3) Scholarship for UN veterans descendants Provide assistance for the descendants of the Korean War veterans in lowincome countries to help them complete their basic education (elementary, middle- / high-school curriculum) Period : Jan 2012 ~ Dec 2013 Applicable Nations : Ethiopia, Philippines, Thailand, Colombia Fund Raising : Encourage government officials to donate a small portion of their salary (below 1,000 Won) * 280 Million Won raised for 3,815 beneficiaries * In line with the initiative to promote the national brand from a recipient nation to a donor nation Build UN Peace Memorial Hall in Busan Teach the post-war generation on the horrible scenes of war as well as the importance of peace while promote sense of patriotism Period / Place : 2012 ~ 2013 / DangGok Park in Busan Budget : 29.2 Billion Won * Built in conjunction with the world s only UN Memorial Park 21

Honoring the War Veterans and Units (1/4) Victory Ceremony for the Battle of Nakdong Period / Host : Aug-Sept 2012 / ROKA 2OC Consolidated event commemorating major battles near the Nakdong river defense line DaBooDong, YoungCheon, ShinRung, AnnKang / GiGye, PoHang Battle, and etc Hold a 3-day event at the Nakdong riverfront, the actual battlefield during the Korean War Security awareness event for 2 days (open to students and civilians, raise security awareness) Battle reenactment and victory ceremony for 1 day (in honor and appreciation of the war veterans) Have the US 19th ESC servicemembers and local residents near Camp Carroll to participate in the battle reenactment events Associated with the `Nakdong River Peace and Patriotism Park project 27

Honoring the War Veterans and Units (2/4) Victory Ceremony for Battle of Incheon Period / Host : Sep 2012 / Navy HQ Commemorate the largest combined amphibious operation by the UN forces (8 nations participated) For 3 days, at the actual landing site in Wolmi-do Sep 13 ~ 14 : Encourage participation of students and civilians and raise security awareness by holding a public event Start with the KLO commando unit s lamp-lighting event in Palmi-do (Sep 14) Sep 15 : Wreath-laying ceremony at the MacArthur s statue, and battle victory ceremony on ROKS Dokdo * Honor the war veterans through various events including the reenactment of the landing operation Invite and show appreciation to representatives from the military attache offices of 7 nations that participated in the landing operation 29

Honoring the War Veterans and Units (3/4) Victory Ceremony for the Battle of Chuncheon Period / Host : Oct 2012 / 2nd Corps Remember the battle in which we gained victory through joint Civ-Gov-Mil efforts Provided the environment for the UN forces to participate in the war by holding back North Korean forces for 3 days For 3 days, at Subyun Park along with Chuncheon Cultural Festival Security awareness event for 2 days (open to students and civilians, raise security awareness) Battle reenactment and victory ceremony for 1 day (in honor and appreciation of the war veterans) Battle reenactment based on war history Display roles played by the 16th Artillery Battalion and Chuncheon citizens 31

Promoting a culture of patriotism (2/3) Prepare musical performance produced by the ROK military in both Korea and the US Jointly coordinate with the Korean Musical Theater Association to prepare for performance in both Korea and the US Featuring both active duty servicemen and musical theater professionals Performance in the US in 2013 will be held in conjunction with the commemorative ceremony for the 60th anniversary of the 7.27 armistice agreement * Invite US veterans and servicemento tours in 6 major cities Identify families bereaved by the Korean War Identify bereaved families of those killed in action and provide them with veterans benefits and exalt honor * 1,925 out of 18,631 identified (Goal: identify 2,000 in 2012) Integrate the efforts with the activities of the Remains Excavation & Identification Group in order to maximize the outcome 43

Project Direction for 2013 Prepare a project to promote the significance of the 60th anniversary of the 7.27 cease-fire ROK Armed Forces and 60 nations around the world joined their efforts to defeat the communist invasion of North Korea Recognize that the national security can be maintained only through the ROK US alliance and robust military readiness Recognize the fact that collective efforts of all the citizens were crucial in overcoming the ruins of war to achieve national prosperity Invite a large number of Korean War veterans to show appreciation and pay respect on the government level Strengthen the military alliance with the UN participating nations through joint events 47
