The Amy Buller PhD Scholarship, named after the founder of the charity based at Cumberland Lodge, is a joint project with Royal Holloway, University of London. The scholar will help host student study retreats at Cumberland Lodge while working on a PhD on a subject in keeping with the Lodge s ethos. A message from a Cumberland Lodge Scholar Adelina Gavrila is one of the first six Cumberland Lodge Scholars, selected from 223 applicants from universities across the UK. The Cumberland Scholarship offers an amazing platform for exchanging ideas and for initiating debates, by bringing together leading thinkers on social and ethical matters. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to take part and I am really looking forward to starting my work as a scholar. Adelina is studying for a PhD at Leicester University, having graduated in Biological Sciences at Coventry University, and her research is seeking to find a more effective treatment for people suffering from severe asthma than is currently available. Adelina has also worked as a volunteer for the Red Cross, in schools to help underachieving children raise their academic performance, and gives public talks on her research through the Leicester Adult Education College.
