The course consists of units of competency and a workplace clinical practice unit. At the end of your theory component at TAFE NSW you will be asked to complete a learner survey. 1. ROLE OF THE ENROLLED NURSE The enrolled nurse is an associate to the registered nurse and an integral member of the health care team delivering nursing care to clients. Under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse, the enrolled nurse provides nursing care in institutional, community and health care settings. This involves preventative, curative and rehabilitative care, which takes into account the individual needs of health care consumers. 2. UNITS OF COMPETENCY HLTAP501A Analyse health information HLTEN507A Administer and monitor medications in the work environment 17591A Workplace clinical practice Registered nurses who have 2 years post registration experience either full-time or equivalent, or is a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) or clinical nurse educator (CNE) AND be approved for supervision and assessment of medication administration and be on the medication administration database with current experience in administering medication will directly supervise the on-the-job component of the course. The minimum standards of professional practice are expected to be met by the student when under supervision in clinical practice. Version1.1 Page 5

COURSE OUTCOMES To receive the Statement of Attainment in Medication Administration for Enrolled Nurses learners must complete two (2) units of competency from the Health Training Package HLT07 and one (1) workplace clinical practice unit. HLTAP501A Pre-Requisites Analyse health information HLTAP401A Confirm physical health status Hours 55 Unit purpose This unit of competency describes the application of in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, which will enable the learner to analyse and problem solve available health information to plan services. The learner will: analyse health information plan action(s) to address identified health status implement services. HLTEN507A Administer and monitor medications in the work environment Pre-Requisites Hours 62 HLTAP501A Analyse health information HLTEN502A Apply effective communication skills in nursing practice HLTEN509A Apply legal and ethical parameters to nursing practice Unit Purpose On completion of this unit of competency the learner should have developed the knowledge and skills required of enrolled nurses to administer and monitor medications and evaluate their effectiveness for clients within a health environment. The learner will: minimise potential risk to safe administration of medications prepare for medication administration within the scope of practice of the enrolled nurse administer medications within legal parameters monitor and evaluate client response to administered medication monitor peripheral intravenous therapy develop strategies for pain management. The learner will: minimise potential risk to safe administration of the medications prepare for medication administration within the scope of practice of the enrolled nurse administer medications within legal parameters monitor and evaluate client response to administered medication monitor peripheral intravenous therapy develop strategies for pain management Flexible Delivery Package Learners will be required to complete a flexible learning package to support the acquisition of higher level of understanding and knowledge required for medication administration. Learners will receive this package on enrolment to the course, and this package must be completed prior to undertaking the workplace clinical assessment unit. 4. OVERVIEW OF ASSESSMENT SCHEDULE HLTAP501A Analyse health information Assessment Events There are two (2) assessment events for this unit of competency. Assessment Method 1: Knowledge/Application Test = 50% Assessment Method 2: Holistic Skills Assessment = 50% Version1.1 Page 7

HLTEN507A Administer and monitor medications in the work environment Assessment Events There are three (3) assessment events for this unit of competency: Assessment Method 1: Calculations test with 100% mastery. A calculator can be used for the HLTEN507A calculation test. Note: Only TAFE NSW supplied calculators may be used. Assessment Method 2: Clinical skills Checking of S8 drugs with an RN, administering of oral, IMI/SCI and IVI medications in the simulated setting. Assessment Method 3: Category C Examination Prescribed examination. This is a Category C exam which is centrally set, locally marked and will be developed/ provided by the Nursing Unit, TAFE NSW Training and Education Support Industry Skills Unit. 17591A Workplace Clinical Practice Assessment Events The aim of this unit is to provide opportunities for the learner to practise clinical skills and demonstrate competence in administration of medication in the workplace. Assessment Method Workplace clinical assessment of competency. Clinical Skills Assessments oral/enteral intramuscular/subcutaneous 5. POLICY ISSUES Must Pass Competent/not competent 5.1 Entry Requirements You must be an enrolled nurse with current authority to practise with the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW. You must have one of the following TAFE NSW qualifications or equivalent: the Advanced Certificate in Nursing (Enrolled Nurse) or, Certificate IV in Nursing (Enrolled Nursing) or, Certificate IV in Conversion/Refresher (Enrolled Nurse). In addition you must be either employed as an enrolled nurse in a service/health care facility/institution or be eligible for employment as an enrolled nurse in a service/health care facility/institution and having practised within the last five years.
