Dear All, From the Desk of Fr. Mike Happy May! Some things. 1. Organ Recital and Songfest This takes place today (May 6th) at 4:00 pm here in church. Among others, my own father will be here to play a piece! He is an organist at St. Charles, where I grew up. He has played the 8:00 am Mass there for a long time. Come and enjoy the beauty of our organ and the talent here at St. Joe. Free admission and a reception follows. 2. Festival It s coming! Pray for GOOD WEATHER! And for a great turnout. May 10, 11, and 12. It s going to be great. Thanks to everyone who is helping...we still need more help! Most importantly, come and bring all your friends! 3. Nathan s 5K Run/Walk A 5K walk in honor of Nathan Gibson, a former St. Joseph student, will take place on Saturday, May 12th. 4. Parish Council Nominations Pauline Lancaster and Teri Mackey will finish their terms on Parish Council in June. We need to elect a total of three new members. If you know someone who you think would be a great addition to the Parish Council, or if you yourself would like to serve, please let me know. Email me at frmike@sjsshelbyville.org call or text me at 812-391-0047. If we have more than three people, we will have all their bios in the bulletin and have an election the last weekend in May. 5. Race for Vocations Thanks to all who took part in the Race for Vocations this Saturday. It was a great joy! All in all, we had about 40 people from Shelby County take part. Thanks. 6. Mrs. Fewell By now, you have probably heard about Mrs. Fewell s leaving. Please see her letter on page 5. I am deeply thankful to Mrs. Fewell for all she has done for our school. She has worked long and hard to grow our school, and her efforts have been fruitful. My favorite two things about her: she is DEVOUTLY Catholic and is a get-thingsdone kind of person, with a great vision and the ability to put it into practice. We will miss her very much. The search process has already started for the new principal. Like all schools searching for new principals, we will rely on the help, wisdom, and guidance of the Office of Catholic Schools. That is standard diocesan procedure and I m glad for it. It s too big a job to do on our own, and leaning on them helps us to be objective in our search. Please pray for a good and holy principal. 7. Month of Mary May is the month of Mary. I encourage all members of our parish to pray a rosary every day during May. This Saturday after 5:00 pm Mass is May Crowning for the wider parish. The school will have a separate May Crowning. We need Blessed Mother. My prayers and love! Fr. Mike Ask Fr. Mike Did God create the dinosaurs before He created everything else because no people were alive during the dinosaurs? Sam (Preschool) A: Sam, I am very impressed by your question young man! Dinosaurs lived about 65 million years ago, which was long before people came to exist. (The first human seems to have come to be about 200,000 years ago). The Bible was written a long time after the last dinosaur died, so that s why we can t find any mention of dinosaurs in the Bible. That all said, God did not create the dinosaurs before everything else first he made the land, the water, the sky, plants, etc. Good question sir! Q: Why do churches have stained glass windows? Kale C. A: Churches have stained glass windows for a few reasons. First, they tell the story of what God has done. They tell our salvation history Jesus miracles, the role of Blessed Mother, the saints, etc. Some even tell local parish histories, like at St. Vincent. A second reason for stained windows is that they are beautiful and the Church says that whenever we experience beauty, we experience the Lord. They help us to pray because they help to create a prayer space.. Got questions? Go to www.stjoeshelby.org and click on Ask Fr. Mike or Dcn. Tom. Or write out your question and give it to us in person. Sixth Sunday of Easter May 6, 2018 It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit. John 15:16

Message from Mrs. Fewell Dear St. Joe Families, It is hard to believe that another school year is closely drawing to an end. I am so proud of all that our students have accomplished this year. They are an amazing group of children, and I am so blessed to be their principal. As hard as this is for me to announce, this will be my last year as principal at St. Joseph. Being with you, getting to know your children, and being a part of your faith community has meant so much to me. I cannot tell you the blessings that I have received these past three years. God has called me to a new opportunity to serve Him, and though it is hard to leave, this decision is guided by Him. Please know of my continued prayers for you and for the principal search committee. I know that God will guide this process, under the leadership of Fr. Mike and the Office of Catholic Schools, and bless you with an amazing principal. Yours in Christ, Bethany Fewell Congratulations! Sr. Joan s Corner Dear Parishioners, All three readings this week are all about love. In the first reading we hear that God shows no partiality. God accepts everyone---everyone. Think about that even the ones we don t think worthy, even you and me. The second reading says, let us love one another. And then in the Gospel, Jesus says, As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Many people find it hard to really believe that God loves them. This is the reason God the Father sent his Son, Jesus to be one of us human beings was to show us how much he loved us and to show us how to love one another. This week as you pray, take time to just sit and think about the fact that God who created the universe and is, was and always will be perfectly happy. He chose to become a human being to show us that this God loves us just as we are and wanted to show us how to love each other without bitterness and strife. In this prayer we can ask for God s help because Jesus says, whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another. Sr. Joan We joyfully share our gifts to nourish the community. ---- St. Vincent Purpose Statement April 29, 2018 Sunday Collection: $ 3,566.00 Children Collection: $ 9.00 Catholic Home Missions Coll: $ 581.00 Church of Africa Collection: $ 80.00 St. Vincent News New Parish Council Members A thanks and welcome to John Kappes, Lesa Brinson and Sarah Haehl who were elected to serve on our Parish Council for the coming years.
