Francis Willis Unit Specialist forensic service www.lpft.nhs.uk

What is Francis Willis Unit? The Francis Willis Unit is an NHS low secure inpatient forensic unit. The unit provides assessment and treatment for people (aged 18-65) with a primary diagnosis of mental illness, who may exhibit challenging or high risk behaviours. People may require interventions within a secure environment due to the risk posed to themselves or others. Sources of referrals to the Francis Willis Unit are often from other mental health services, the court system, prisons and higher secure hospitals with all patients detained under the Mental Health Act. Philosophy of care We believe that all service users have the right to the highest possible standards of care and have the right to be fully involved and influential over their care and treatment. We aim to provide a caring and safe environment, within a secure clinical setting, which supports quality and efficiency. The service user and their representatives (with consent from the service user) have the right to be kept fully informed and involved in the planning and delivery of care, promoting independence and enhancing quality of life. Care will be delivered in a professional manner taking into account personal, religious, cultural and ethnic preferences, within a friendly relaxed and non-judgemental environment.

The facilities The Francis Willis Unit has 15 individual bedrooms with access to communal living and dining facilities. An equipped kitchen area is available for service users to develop and maintain living skills as part of an occupational therapy programme. A craft room and gym are also available for creative activities and physical exercise.

What can we provide? A named nurse/key worker with identified associate nurses that form a service user s nursing care team. A comfortable, low secure environment for assessment and treatment of individuals with challenging needs and high risk behaviours. Daily activities provided within a structured environment, with extensive occupational therapy support to meet the individual s needs. Individual patient care planning based on assessment, including social inclusion activities and daily living skills. A multi-disciplinary team approach to the provision of care and treatment. Primary focus on community settlement, supported by community mental health teams, particularly by the community specialist forensic team.

Therapy We aim to reduce risk and promote independence, social inclusion and resettlement skills for life. Francis Willis Unit offers a broad range of therapeutic activities, both on and off the unit, facilitated by occupational therapy, psychology, nursing, gym instructor, social work and medicine. These include: Life skills training (cookery, budgeting, community skills, resettlement courses) Psycho-education/psychological therapies (mental health awareness, substance misuse, coping skills, problem solving, anxiety management) Health education/promotion (healthy lifestyle courses, exercise, smoking cessation) Leisure activities (arts, crafts, sports, cinema, visits to place of interest) Vocational rehabilitation (education, training and preparation for employment) Socially inclusive principles are our guiding philosophy. We encourage choice and promote inclusion through our practice. Wherever possible, we encourage and make use of local community facilities. Staffing Registered medical officer (RMO) Psychologists Qualified nurses (RNMH, RNLD) Nursing assistants Occupational therapists Social workers Educational support Gym instructor

Where are we? The Francis Willis Unit is situated within the grounds of Lincoln County Hospital approximately two miles from the centre of the City of Lincoln. Smokefree site To create a healthier environment for everyone, staff, patients and all visitors are not allowed to smoke anywhere on LPFT sites including wards, grounds and vehicles. There is lots of support available for people who smoke to help them through the change whether they wish to stop smoking permanently or for the duration of their appointment or stay with us.
