SCOTTISH WIDOWS CARE

SCOTTISH WIDOWS CARE There when you need us for more than just financial help

SCOTTISH WIDOWS CARE WHAT IS SCOTTISH WIDOWS CARE? By selecting Scottish Widows Protect you are giving yourself peace of mind and confidence that you ve got the right protection insurance in place to help protect your financial future. An insurance payout can really help to ease the financial burden at a time of family bereavement or critical illness diagnosis but you and your family might need more than just financial support. That s why with Scottish Widows Protect you have access to our Scottish Widows Care service, from the day your policy starts. This service is provided by RedArc who provide you with long-term practical advice and emotional support from a dedicated personal nurse adviser. 2

WHO ARE REDARC? RedArc has been helping people with serious medical conditions since it was founded in 1998. This is a team of personal nurse advisers who provide practical advice and emotional support to individuals and their families at a time when they re experiencing hardship such as the loss of a loved one, being diagnosed with a serious illness, mental health concerns, long-term elderly care and many more. All nurses are highly experienced, registered nurses with a wide range of specialised and general medical knowledge. Emotional support After speaking with a personal nurse adviser it might be identified that the individual would benefit from a second medical opinion and a face to face consultation with a Consultant Specialist is best. RedArc work with Healix Health Services Ltd who employ over 90 fully qualified doctors and nurses and has a database of over 22,000 UK Consultant Specialists. This database of Consultant Specialists covers all major specialities including Cardiology, Mental Health, Oncology, Paediatrics, Respiratory and many more. With RedArc a wide range of therapies and counselling are sourced according to a clinical assessment of the needs of each individual and only accredited professionals are used. HOW SCOTTISH WIDOWS CARE WORKS FOR YOU From the day your policy starts you have access to Scottish Widows Care. You can access support at any time during the life of your plan, before, during and after a claim the service is there whenever you need it. Not only can you use Scottish Widows Care but we make it available to your partner and children too. We understand that everyone s experience and circumstances will be different so we ensure we offer you a flexible service that can be customised to suit your exact requirements giving you and your family the personalised support you need. Anything discussed is completely confidential and never shared with any other party. Once you contact Scottish Widows Care you ll be allocated a personal nurse adviser who will help you and stay in touch for as long and as often as you need. The nurse will provide bespoke support to you over the phone, this means if you re unwell or feeling vulnerable you can speak confidentially to the nurse from the comfort of your own home. There are many reasons why you might use the Scottish Widows Care service, here are a couple of examples: Helping you understand your diagnosis and treatment Your personal nurse adviser can explain medical terminology, help you navigate NHS services and understand what treatment options are available. They can also send you leaflets, books and DVDs related to your condition or illness. Emotional support for you and your family Often the hardest part of recovery is dealing with the emotional impact. Your personal nurse adviser is trained to help you cope with the wide range of emotions you may be experiencing and will be there for you as long as you need them. 4

5

Helping you to recover Your personal nurse adviser will make recommendations for your recovery and rehabilitation based on your individual needs and circumstances, such as Helping you to come to terms with changes you may need to make as a result of your illness or disability and support you to make the best recovery you can Arranging access to cardiac rehabilitation following a heart attack or diagnosis of heart disease Arranging telephone-based oncology nursing support following a diagnosis of cancer Organising access to specialist speech or language therapy following a stroke or brain injury. Helping you and your business Also available when you take out business protection, a personal nurse adviser can work with your business to offer support to co-workers in the event of a bereavement, advise on how to support an employee who may choose to work through treatment for ill health or help a person return to work following their recovery from illness. Helping with bereavement The support given is ongoing and you will speak to the same personal nurse adviser each time. Therefore you benefit from long-term support from a nurse who you ve come to know and trust. The service is tailored to your particular needs, it may be that you need help with lots of practical advice initially but as time goes on you could benefit from some more emotional support. Your personal nurse adviser has contacts with lots of organisations, including charities and support groups that may be of help. A bereaved person may benefit significantly from counselling or complementary therapy and your nurse can organise this option too. Access to a second medical opinion Your personal nurse adviser can help you decide if a second medical opinion would be of benefit. They can then arrange a face to face consultation with a UK Consultant Specialist offering support and guidance both before and after the consultation. 6

7

WHY MIGHT YOU WANT A SECOND OPINION? There are many different reasons why someone might want to seek a second opinion Confirmation of a diagnosis Help in making choices about treatment Concern that a condition is not improving Unsure about information or recommendations from their existing Consultant 8

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Some customers value the opportunity to discuss their medical condition in a face to face private consultation. Some customers may go on to have treatment in the UK with the consultant who provided the second opinion. Consultations can be arranged very quickly with the most appropriate consultant specialist but without long delays in extracting medical records from the NHS. Minimise delays in making important treatment decisions. All medical conditions are included, including Mental Health. The support of the personal nurse adviser is invaluable both before and after the Second Opinion. There is help to prepare for the consultation and deal with the outcome, often involving difficult choices at a very emotional and vulnerable time, including helping people come to terms with disappointing news. We hope you never have cause to use our service but if circumstances change and life takes an unexpected turn Scottish Widows Care is here to support you from day one not just during a claim. Speak to your Financial Adviser if you need any other information. Scottish Widows provides RedArc services at no extra cost; they are not a core benefit of the plan. This service can be amended, replaced or withdrawn at any time. 9
