FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the Spring Camporee? The Spring Camporee is a time for all Scouts to come together and have a great weekend of camping, competition, recognition, and fun all Pig themed! This Pig-Packed weekend involves overnight camping and lots of fun activities and competitions. Teams will compete at skill stations on Saturday morning in hopes of winning the coveted 2018 Spring Camporee Grand Champion Award!! In the afternoon the Scouts will have Tomahawks, Bow and Arrow (Cub level), and Slingshots as well as games and races. There will also be Ga-Ga Ball and Fishing available during any free periods (Bring your own fishing gear). Saturday night we will host a BBQ dinner consisting of BBQ sandwich w/ slaw, baked beans, and macaroni and cheese. After dinner we will have District Awards and a Crossover Ceremony as part of the campfire program. Be sure to order your event shirt when you register on Doubleknot for only $10.00. Pre-ordered shirts will be available to be picked up at the event. Orders will also be taken during the event, but the price goes up to $15.00. Who can attend the Spring Camporee? All scouts and leaders registered with Boy Scouts of America are welcome to camp for the weekend as well as any parents that have taken Youth Protection. On Saturday all family and friends are welcome to visit to watch the activities and/or the Campfire program (don t forget to bring a chair). Guest are welcome to join us for the Saturday night dinner, but they must be registered and pay the $14.00 which includes an event patch. When is the Spring Camporee and how much is it? The Spring Camporee will be held May 4 th, 5 th, and 6th when there is a good chance of having great weather for the event. The cost for the weekend is $14.00 and includes the event patch and Saturday night BBQ dinner. Page 2 of 6
Where is the Spring Camporee? Red Oak Nursery 22111 Kings Hwy, Montross, VA. Directions Red Oak Nurseries, Inc. is located on Route 3 between the towns of Montross and Warsaw in Virginia s Northern Neck. Visitors can reach Red Oak by taking the following routes: From Northern Virginia: Take 95 south to Fredericksburg, VA. Exit onto Route 3 east and travel 50 miles to Red Oak. From Richmond, VA: Take 360 East to Tappahannock. Turn right at the fourth stop light to follow 360 across the Rappahannock bridge. Turn left onto Route 3 in Warsaw and follow for 7 miles to Red Oak. What are the Spring Camporee Activities? SATURDAY MORNING SKILLS COMPETIONS Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will compete in two separate divisions in teams of up to 7 scouts per team to be the 2018 Spring Camporee Grand Champions SKILL STATIONS Did you say Bacon? Boy Scouts will need to start a fire and cook up some bacon being judge by time. Cub Scouts will be instructed about fire starting and fire safety and judged by knowledge and listening skills. Boar Attack A Wild Boar has attacked a Scout leader. Scouts will demonstrate first aid skills to save the Scout leader. Judged on time and knowledge of care. Keep the pigs out Keep the pigs out of your food by getting it off the ground and out of reach. Judged on time. Shelter your Pig A storm is coming and you don t want your pig to get wet. Build a shelter to protect your pig from the weather. Judged on time and quality of the shelter. When Pigs Fly Work through a series of targets in a golf style play of team members taking turns getting the flying pig (frisbee) into a series of targets. Judged on time. Pig Herding Use teamwork to move your blind pig (a member of your team) through an obstacle course. Judged on time. Page 3 of 6
CONSESSION STAND Bring Cash!!! There will be a concession stand open during the midday activities offering a variety of snacks and beverages. They will also be taking orders for event T-shirts for $15.00 each so be sure to pre-order with registration for $10.00! Scouts will cross the wooden bridge and be welcomed into their new Troops. Check-in and Registration Troop and Pack units may arrive Friday evening, May 4th at 6:00pm to set up campsites. Upon entering, units will proceed to the registration area to sign in, campsite areas will be assigned at that time. Vehicles will be permitted in campsites to unload then immediately proceed to designated parking area. For the safety of participants, your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Parking The following parking procedure has been implemented for the Camporee. We all want to have a safe event. All vehicles must park along the road surrounding the Camporee field. Units may park a trailer at their campsite. Please ensure the trailer wheels are chocked. Camping Campers are responsible for the following: Water for drinking, washing, cooking, & cleaning up (water is not available at Red Oak Nursery) Saturday nights meal will be provided, all other meals for the weekend are the units responsibility. Be prepared for your own trash removal. Bring plenty of trash bags. Campsite cleanup to include firewood removal from fire stands and campsites. Camp safety adherence to BSA policy. Water No one is allowed to enter the water and no watercraft may be used during this event. Fishing is allowed from the shores of the pond. Campfires Depending on local fire conditions, additional restrictions may be imposed. All fires in unit campsites must be in a raised fire pit, no fires on the ground. Firewood should be brought in from an outside source; also, on site deadfall may be used. All fires must be monitored at all times!!! Don t forget fire bucket! General Concerns Vehicle Speed Drivers must exercise EXTREME caution when operating motor vehicles. Passengers are not allowed to ride in back of pickup trucks without seats equipped with seat belts. Please, no sheath knives (this includes adults). Tent trenching is not allowed. Tents must be in designated area of the campsite only. Open flames in tents are prohibited. Liquid fuels, such as charcoal starter, or white gas are not permitted in camp, nor is propane allowed in tents. However, Coleman type cook stove fuel is allowed when used by adults and stored with caution. Firearms and fireworks are not allowed in camp. Radios and electronic devices are strongly discouraged. Alcoholic beverages and illegal substances are never permitted at BSA activities. Offenders will be asked to leave. Secure and store foods to prevent attracting little furry friends. All campers are to stay within the boundaries set forth by the District Leadership. We do not want scouts wandering away from camp! No swimming allowed. Please enforce the Buddy System with your scouts Each unit must have two-deep adult leadership if not see Joe Hendricks with Troop 360 and we will camp you near another troop (not a problem). Please respect others during Lights out (10:30 pm-7am). Scouts are not allowed out of their site after lights out except for to and from the port-a-lets Page 6 of 6
