Course Information The Millennium Centre is proud to be the only school Sixth Form Centre in Derby to offer this level 3 Diploma Course. The Course covers four major occupational areas offering a large and varied range of potential careers in four sectors, Health Sector, Adult Social Care, the Children and Young Peoples Workforce, Community Justice and Health. This Diploma offers the opportunity to gain entry to degree programmes at university or commence work or further training in one of the four sectors. The Diploma in Society Health & Development is a two year full time course providing a specialist and work related programme of study. It covers key skills and knowledge alongside exciting and interesting work placements and employer engagement. The course includes two weeks of work experience in the 4 sectors as well as visits to hospitals, care homes, schools and the Courts. Guest speakers will be regular visitors to the classes and conferences on key issues will replace some whole days of teaching. This course is for you if you have a genuine interest in people providing support and care for those that are most in need. If you want to learn the skills needed to enter a rewarding profession and gain vital knowledge and experience to kick start your career, the Diploma will give you opportunities to develop not only your knowledge and skills but also yourself, as an important part of our community and society. Syllabus Content This course will be taught by specialist teachers in new classrooms and simulation rooms and consists of six units:- 1. The Society, Health and Development context. 2. Principles and Values in practice. 3. Partnership working in Society, Health and Development. 4. Communication and Information sharing in Society, Health and Development. 5. Personal & Professional Development in the Work Environment. 6. Working to Safeguard & Protect Individuals across The Society, Health & Development sectors. Qualities You will require 5 A*-C in 5 different subjects including Maths and English at GCSE. A real interest in people is essential along with wanting to develop the practical aspects of caring for them within the 4 sectors. Method of Assessment Units 1 and 2 are assessed by external examination. Units 3-6 are assessed by controlled assessment In Year 12 the Unit 1 examination will be in June. Units 4 & 5 will be assessed by controlled assessments carried out throughout the year to be completed by April. In Year 13 the Unit 2 examination will be in June. Units 3 & 6 will be assessed by controlled assessment carried out throughout the year to be completed by April. In addition an Extended Research Project will be undertaken in the second half of Year 12 to be completed by December of Year 13. This will add additional valuable points to the qualification, which will be useful for University applications.
Future Prospects This course is widely recognised by Universities and Colleges of Higher Education and can lead on to degree courses or advanced training in a very wide selection of careers. Health Sector - job roles include nursing, midwifery and health visitors. Allied health professions, for example art/music/drama therapists, chiropodists/podiatrists, speech and language therapists, ambulance paramedics, nursing assistants, secretaries, clerks and occupational therapists. Adult Social Care Sector - employment opportunities include care assistants, social workers, care coordinators, counsellors and boarder control. Community Justice - offers the Crown Prosecution Service, Probation Service, criminal Justice (Courts) and the Police. Children and Young Peoples Workforce - includes teachers, teaching assistants, nursery nurses, nursery workers, childminders, youth work, children s centres and children s social work.
