Taking Control of Depression Do you think you may be having signs of depression? Are you having feelings of excessive guilt, feelings of worthlessness, sleep problems, thoughts about death or dying that keep coming back these may be signs of depression. Make sure you talk about this with your Doctor. Depression can cause you to lose interest in things you used to enjoy and may affect daily living. Ask about a checkup when having such symptoms. Checkup & screenings for depression Warning signs for depression are not the same for each person. That s why your Doctor will check your overall physical health to make sure another medical problem, such as thyroid disease, is not causing your symptoms. Diagnosing depression involves a complete history and physical exam. This testing and initial treatment can be done by your Doctor, who may also refer you to a Behavioral Health Provider to give you the care you need. True depression isn t the same as occasional periods of feeling down. The screening will try to find out: How many symptoms of depression you have How long you have had them How much they get in the way of your ability to live a normal life Ways to help ease depression: Taking part in Intensive Outpatient Treatment Programs, Group Therapy, Individual Counseling, and Support Groups. Taking positive action such as exercising, improving eating habits, getting proper sleep, and joining social support groups. Anti-depressant Medicines Various types of medicines like Citalopram and Bupropion work in different ways to treat depression. Please ask your Doctor about your options for medicines. Also talk with the Doctor or pharmacist about any side effects. If one medicine does not work well for you, ask your Doctor about trying another. There are lots of different treatments available. 5
