news CENTRE WPSH Ribbon weekly newsletter of West Parry Sound Health Centre May 7 to 13 2018 Paris in the spring! French Bistro Day in the Cafeteria! A large team brings care closer to home In the warm spring sun outside the Pointe au Baril Nursing Station a large group of partners from all across our catchment gathered to celebrate care closer to home: nurse practitioners, staff, First Nation leaders, municipal councillors and staff, community advisory committee members, board and staff leaders from the North East Local Health Integration Network (NE LHIN). On Monday 30 April, NE LHIN Director of Primary Care Jennifer MacKinnon announced an investment of $2.6 million to support West Parry Sound Health Centre (WPSHC) in the transformation of Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics by combining and enhancing the health centre s six existing nursing stations. Our nursing stations provide exceptional primary care and improve access for the patients and families who we serve in rural communities throughout West Parry Sound, said CEO Donald Sanderson. We are truly excited about the difference that this significant investment in additional care providers will mean in terms of enhanced care, closer to home. Support was also announced for Wasauksing First Nation to develop a primary care clinic. Investments include: $2.6 million to support additional health care professionals at WPSHC s nursing stations. New on-site service visits will include mental health, social work, physiotherapy, and more nurse practitioner time. Wasauksing First Nation $900,000 to support the creation of an Indigenous interprofessional primary care team to provide services that promote physical and mental health for community members, with a focus on traditional healing. The North East LHIN listens and responds to the health care experience of fellow northerners. By supporting greater access to primary care in these communities, we are helping to ensure the health care needs of northerners are met closer to home, said NE LHIN CEO Jeremy Stevenson. Better care starts here: celebrating Nursing Week With the theme Better Care Starts Here, the Ontario Nurses Association s (ONA) 65,000 registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and registered practical nurses will celebrate their profession during Nursing Week 2018. Scheduled for May 7 to 13, ONA members Nursing Week theme reflects nurses unique, highly developed skills, and the high-quality care they provide to Ontarians. Nursing Week is a much-needed pause during the year, when we put aside the challenges and serious issues facing the nursing profession to celebrate our skills, education, and knowledge, said ONA President Vicki McKenna, RN. Nurses know that we are the backbone of our health care system - as do our patients, she added. We know that better care starts with nurses - in every sector of health care - and that is truly something to celebrate. Nursing Week coincides with the May 12 birthday of Florence Nightingale - considered by many to be the pioneer of modern nursing. ONA members in every sector of health care will be holding events to mark this important week for the profession. Members of ONA s Board of Directors, including McKenna and First Vice-President Cathryn Hoy, RN, will be traveling the province to celebrate at selected member events, conduct site visits, and celebrate the vital profession of nursing. This week we will celebrate our profession and our compassion, setting aside the challenges brought by RN cuts, heavy workloads, increasing workplace violence and other issues, said McKenna. ONA is the union representing 65,000 registered nurses, nurse practitioners, registered practical nurses and health care professionals, as well as almost 16,000 nursing student affiliates, providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics, and industry. From www.ona.org Thank You to all members of our Nursing Team for your skills and dedication to the delivery of Patient and Family Centred Care. Please join us for the Nursing Award event The Nursing Award Celebration will be held on Friday 11 May at 2 p.m. in the Main Lobby. We are pleased to share that Parry Sound Mayor Jamie McGarvey is scheduled to be joining us this year to assist with the presentation. Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate a nursing colleague who met the Excellence Award criteria. The Department of Patient Care would like to congratulate the following award nominees: Christine Marshall Jordan Patten Lacey MacEwen Devon Colmer Winner to be announced this Friday! We would like to acknowledge Jennifer Bishop, Shelby Greenaway, and Cheryl Tranter who were nominated as a group.
May is Borderline Personality Disorder Awareness Month www.borderlinepersonalitydisorder.com Content from the Canadian Mental Health Association - www.cmha.bc.ca In the past, people thought that someone with borderline personality disorder (BPD) was on the borderline between psychosis and neurosis (anxiety/depression). Today, we know much more about BPD, and there is more research on BDP than any other personality disorder. But there is a lot of stigma around personality disorders. People living with borderline personality disorder may be given hurtful labels. But no one is ever just their diagnosis, whether they re living with a personality disorder or any other mental illness. A personality disorder is a pattern of feelings, thoughts and behaviours that may have been with you for a long time. Personality disorders affect the way you understand yourself, the way you react to the world around you, the way you cope with emotions, and the way you navigate relationships. Having a personality disorder does not mean that there is something wrong with your personality it simply means that you have a pattern of feelings, thoughts and emotions for a long time that cause problems. Borderline personality disorder is a mental illness that affects the way to relate to other people and the way you relate to yourself. If you re living with borderline personality disorder, you might feel like there s something fundamentally wrong with who you are - you might feel flawed or worthless, or you might not even have a good sense of who you are as a person. Your moods might be extreme and change all the time, and you might have a hard time controlling impulses or urges. You may have a hard time trusting others and you may be very scared of being abandoned or alone. BPD is made up of five groups of symptoms: unstable behaviour, unstable emotions, unstable relationships, unstable sense of identity and awareness problems.
