Hutchinson HS MSU Moorhead Derek Bomstad was voted the DII Outstanding Wrestler at last weekend s prestigious NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at the University of Northern Iowa. Bomstad (18-2) was unbeaten in five matches and helped the Dragons to a surprising sixth place finish. Bomstad also pinned his UMary opponent earlier in the week. This marks the second time this season Bomstad has been named NSIC Wrestler of the Week. University of Mary Jesse Laber (Heavyweight, Sr., Napoleon, ND) made his senior season debut with victories in both his matches of the week. After not wrestling any matches prior to January after playing football for U-Mary, Laber defeated MSU Moorhead s Jon Swart 2-0. Laber finished the week with an 8-0 major decision over Jamestown College s Stacey Mello, the eighth-ranked heavyweight in the NAIA. Dusty Vliem made his collegiate debut this week and earned his first victory in his second match. The junior from Hettinger, ND, who hadn t wrestled since high school, started the week with a 7-2 loss to the nation s eighth-ranked Matt Nelson of MSU Moorhead before rebounding with an 11-0 major decision over Jamestown College s Chris Thoreson. MSU Moorhead Derek Bomstad (141 lbs, Fr., Hutchinson, Minn.) was voted the DII Outstanding Wrestler at last weekend s prestigious NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at the University of Northern Iowa. MSU Moorhead pinned NSIC sidekick University of Mary 43-3 and finished sixth with a 2-3 record at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals last weekend at the Cedar Falls, IA. Kelly Janke, Derek Bomstad, Rockie Stavn and Tyler Tubbs recorded falls in the victory over Mary and Bomstad, unbeaten in five matches at the national duals, was named the Division II Outstanding Wrestler. MSUM finished sixth and posted a 3-2 record at last weekend s NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at University of Northern Iowa. MSUM toppled Ashland College 23-14, fell to Nebraska- Omaha, 37-6, defeated UW Parkside 22-10, defeated Upper Iowa, 22-16 and lost to Western State, 21-12, in the consolation finals. Northern State Northern State s grapplers returned to action following a four-week hiatus only to be overpowered by 18th-ranked St. Cloud State, 33-6. NSU s Corbin Surat started the dual off with an exciting 4-2 to give the Wolves the lead, but the Huskies responded by winning eight of the next nine matches. Surat (125-lb.) overcame a 2-1 first period deficit late in the match. With under 30 seconds remaining, Surat managed an escape and turned around for a takedown to nab the lead and gain the 4-2 win. Phillip Downs(165-lb.) secured NSU s other win of the night. Downs scored the first points of the match with a second period reversal. Late in the final period, SCSU s Anderson tied the score with his own reversal, but Downs earned an escape just before the buzzer to take the 3-2 win. Southwest Minnesota State Greg Frank (Sr., Foley, Minn.) picked up SMSU s only win in a 45-3 non-conference loss to Augustana on Friday evening in Sioux Falls. Frank won by an 8-2 decision over Andrew Sorenson at 174. Leading 4-2 going into the third period, Frank scored a three-point near fall with 38 seconds left to secure the victory and added another point for riding time of 2:17. The senior has a team-best record of 17-8 for the season. Upper Iowa Travis Eggers (So, 157, Monona, Iowa, #8 NCAA) completed a perfect run at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals with a 5-0 record for the Peacocks. Fueled by the sophomore s performance Upper Iowa placed 8th at the National Duals. Eggers defeated Dave Walpole (#11 Indianapolis) by fall (3:44) in the opening dual. Eggers then defeated Jason Leavitt (#3 Central Oklahoma), the #5 ranked wrestler in the nation and last year s National Runner-up, by decision 5-2. The sophomore won his next match by decision 10-5 over Vince Bertucci (Central Missouri). Eggers defeated Tallen Wald (#17 MSU Moorhead) by major decision 15-1 and Mazen Kholi (#6 Pitt-Johnstown) by major decision 17-9. The NSIC is a 10-team, 17-sport, NCAA Division II Conference with teams located in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.
