INTRODUCTION Being a Cal-HOSA chapter officer takes hard work and dedication. You will gain experiences and relationships to last a lifetime. The skills gained help prepare you for future careers, opportunities in college, and leadership roles in other organizations. Chapter officers serve Cal-HOSA members and advisors and can make a positive difference in the lives of many people. This handbook will help prepare you for your candidacy as a Cal-HOSA chapter officer. You will find everything you need to familiarize yourself with the roles and responsibilities to prepare you for the pathway to success. Thoroughly review all the enclosed information as you prepare for the chapter officer selection process. This handbook is the beginning of a great journey! As a candidate, you will need to study the Cal-HOSA information at www.cal-hosa.org in addition to the national site at www.hosa.org. You may also want to ask your family and friends to help you practice interviewing and presenting yourself in order to feel comfortable speaking in front of others. While it will take commitment and dedication on your part to truly prepare for this process, the knowledge and lifelong relationships will be well worth it! Becoming a chapter Cal-HOSA officer is a challenging process, yet a very rewarding opportunity. Through this chapter officer candidate process, you will grow as a person and advance in leadership development and career preparation. QUALIFICATIONS To participate in the Cal-HOSA chapter officer program, officer candidates must meet all of the following eligibility requirements:
Have and maintain an active membership of the Cal-HOSA chapter for the current year 2.0 G.P.A. or higher Have and maintain discipline and a clean attendance record Obtain parent approval Have a completed application on file with the chapter advisor Participate in the chapter election process Have a desire and passion for success Show the Cal-HOSA SPIRIT! DUTIES OF CHAPTER OFFICERS President: Conduct meetings according to chapter bylaws and standing rules Take the leadership role when working with officers and members Develop Program of Work and coordinate activities with chapter advisor Keep chapter meetings and activities on task Appoint committees and serve as an ex-officio committee member Vice President: Assist the president in all leadership functions Preside over chapter activities in the absence of the president Assume the duties of president should the office be vacated Coordinate all committee work Secretary: Prepare the minutes of meetings, chapter correspondence and reports Help develop meeting agendas with the president Record the attendance of all chapter meetings Work with the treasurer in maintaining membership data Read minutes and communications at chapter meetings Treasurer: Maintain efficient management and documentation of chapter funds Help collect state and national HOSA dues Keep financial records neat and accurate Assist in preparing the chapter budget
Historian: Maintain a history of local Cal-HOSA chapter activities throughout the year Compile the local chapter s Outstanding Cal-HOSA Chapter book Reporter: Maintain written records of chapter successes and achievements Submit articles to local newspapers, state and national HOSA Coordinate the publication of chapter newsletters Submit chapter newsletter in the National HOSA Chapter Newsletter event Submit chapter activity articles to Heartbeat (Cal-HOSA newsletter) & National HOSA REQUIRED ACTIVITIES CALENDAR Attendance at the following activities is recommended of all chapter officers. DISCIPLINE The chapter officer is allowed _1 chance to improve their behavior. If improvement does not occur, it may result in removal from the team. Offenses: Not abiding by the Cal-HOSA Code of Ethics Unexcused absences (remember your school work always takes top priority, but if you are unable to attend a scheduled meeting or event you must inform the advisor in advance) Cal-HOSA Code of Ethics: The chapter officer shall not: Use and/or have possession of alcohol or drugs Use and/or have possession of tobacco Steal or have possession of stolen goods Use and/or have possession of weapons Be defiant of advisor, administrator, teachers, or medical staff Have two consecutive grading periods below 2.0 G.P.A. Be involved in fighting or disruptive behavior Have any other incidents deemed inappropriate by the chapter Cal-HOSA advisor
CAL-HOSA CHAPTER OFFICE SUCCESS CONTRACT As an officer of the Cal-HOSA Chapter, I will (initial each) Section One: Be on Cal-HOSA Time I agree to: 1. Be on time for all meetings and activities. 2. Record activities in a calendar or planner 3. Keep our team and office as a priority 4. Attend all officer meetings as scheduled by the Cal-HOSA advisor or chapter president 5. Attend all other activities. If I cannot attend, let other officers/advisors know in advance 6. Be responsible by staying on task and using the agenda at meetings 7. Always support other officer/team members, look for ways to help lighten fellow officer s load Section Two: Show Cal-HOSA Pride I agree to: 1. Be honest and open with each other. 2. Not gossip about fellow officers or advisors 3. Communicate with advisors 4. Keep family informed of what I am/our team is doing 5. Encourage ALL members to participate 6. Take time to get to know members 7. Maintain a positive attitude at all times 8. Be a resource to members Section Three: Share the Cal-HOSA Pride I agree to: 1. Help fellow officers, the members, and our chapter 2. Maintain community focus with activities and/or community service 3. Develop creative ideas to get members involved 4. Set an example - be a role model for chapter members 5. Wear proper Cal-HOSA attire when appropriate 6. Conduct myself in an appropriate manner when representing Cal-HOSA 7. Treat members equally 8. Provide constructive feedback and support in all situations 9. Attend Regional Leadership Conference and State Leadership Conference with my chapter. C. Attend all monthly executive officers and monthly chapter meetings. D. Cooperate with other officers and maintain a friendly attitude with them, Always working as a team. E. Set an example for other members by my positive actions both inside and outside of the classroom and take part in ALL activities. F. As an officer, I understand that I am required to abide by all school/cal-hosa policies. Any violation at any time may result in my removal from the officer team.
