The course will be presented in two distinct parts. The first three days of training will be devoted to instruction concerning issues such as: operational law, homeland defense, officer misconduct, enlisted administrative separations, administrative investigations, national security cases, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and updates concerning criminal and civil law issues. The last two days will focus on selected ethics topics presented by Code 13 in conjunction with both Office of General Counsel and DoD ethics attorneys. Students may attend either part of the course separately or both. Centrally funded students will be expected to attend both parts of the course. To obtain a quota for the first three days of this course you must currently serve as a staff judge advocate or have orders to such a billet and must have completed the NJS Basic SJA course. There are no prerequisites required to attend the final two days of ethics training. The Basic Operational Law Training Course is appropriate for Marine Corps and (a) Qualification. California Legal Assistance Course NJS, Det TBD TBD The California Legal Assistance Attorney's Course (CLAAC) is a four day, unfunded (1 course offered annually at NJS Det San Diego. Guest instructors are local subject matter experts who handle nearly all blocks of instruction associated with legal assistance, e.g., Landlord-Tenant, Consumer and Family Law issues, Immigration, California Probate Court, Bankruptcy, and California Consumer Protection Tactics. Open to all judge advocates (military and civilians) practicing in California; however, this course targets legal assistance attorneys from all service branches (military and civilian) who serve clients in California. 7 8 9 Computer Crimes (1 11 14 15 16 Coast Guard Judge Advocate Course Coast Guard Legal Technician Course (1 Defending Complex Cases (1 Defense Trial Enhancement Course (1 Effective Courtroom Communications Course (3 Jacksonville, FL NJS, Naples, Italy 10-Oct-2006 13-Oct-2006 A course for accession Coast Guard Judge Advocates. Familiarization with the Coast Guard legal practice relating to operation, marine safety, and other areas of practical concern. 10-Sep-2007 21-Sep-2007 This course provides training for selected Coast Guard yeoman in areas of basic military justice most frequently encountered within a Coast Guard Command. 21-May-2007 25 May 2007 This course provides intermediate instruction on the substantive law of computer crimes and the search and seizure of computer evidence. The course includes comprehensive instruction focused on both defending and prosecuting military crimes using applicable military and assimilated Federal statutes. 16-Jul-2007 20-Jul-2007 This course will address topics of practical concern to defense counsel handling complex cases. This course is designed for experienced counsel who are already familiar with military defense litigation. The guest instructors for this course are all recognized experts in their respective fields and, therefore, this is one of the most valuable training opportunities offered by NJS. Active-duty commissioned Coast Guard officers who are graduates of an ABA accredited law school, and who are admitted to practice before the bar of a federal court or the highest court of a state/commonwealth. Exceptions: (1) personnel ordered in by COMDT (CG-LPD) who have not taken a bar exam but are scheduled to take the next offered bar exam; and (2) Coast Guard civilian attorneys ordered in by COMDT (CG-LPD). Limited to Coast Guard yeoman personnel who have shown an interest in the legal field, or are ordered to a Coast Guard legal office, and are selected by Commandant, Coast Guard (G-LPD) after submission of CG-5286, Short-Term Training Request. Open to all judge advocates; however, individuals who are currently serving or will be receiving orders in the next six months as staff judge advocates, prosecutorial, or defense attorneys will be given special consideration. Selection is made from judge advocates of all services performing or selected to perform duties as defense counsel or appellate defense counsel. Priority will be given to the more experienced counsel who are scheduled to remain in defense related positions for a period of twelve months or more. 8-Jan-2007 12-Jan-2007 The focus of this course is to enhance or refresh the skills of Military Prosecutors Be a Judge Advocate (open to all services) currently serving or soon to be serving in trial billets. This course is taught by veteran currently in or projected to go into a defense defense counsel. Instruction will be provided in opening statements, direct counsel billet. examinations, cross-examinations, use of expert testimony, and closing arguments among other topics. The lectures will be followed by practical exercises where the students can hone their advocacy skills. 4 Dec 2006 26 Mar 2007 30 Apr 2007 8 Dec 2006 4 May 2007 This course trains courtroom practitioners in the various parts of a trial including opening statement, direct and cross-examination and closing argument. An emphasis is placed on the dynamics of persuasive behavior with a focus on eye contact, voice inflection, releasing distracting physical tension, controlling the members and personalizing your client. The course will provide instruction in developing estate plans for clients including the use of testamentary SGLI and credit shelter trusts. The course will also provide instruction on survivor benefits; estate administration and probate; property ownership; and complex estate planning issues including QTIPs, Medicaid trusts, and other advanced trust planning. Judge advocates serving in, or slated to serve in, a legal assistance billet in which they provide estate planning advice and documents. Must be an attorney or paralegal, military or civilian, attached to a billet in the EURSWA AOR.
