Message from the outgoing CS and CpE UG Advisor: Welcome back, everyone! It s not too early to think about what courses you ll take in Summer and Spring. If you re looking to get elective credit for an internship (and you have passed Data Structures), you should have a faculty member approve an internship contract, which you can find under Department Forms on the CSE website. Also, as Mr. Morgan gets settled into his new position, we d like for more of you to start seeing him with any advising-related questions you have. Please see the first attachment to the newsletter. Message from the incoming UG Advisor: A new semester is under way. I hope you all had a great winter break and survived the first week of the spring semester. I am happy to report that I am settling into my new office in ENB 342B. Stop in and say hi. Advising appointments can be arranged through escheduler. Walkin advising is available. See the hours posted on my door. As always, you can also contact me by telephone but my preference is email. Remember to use your USF email address and include your student number. I look forward to working with you this spring. Message from the Grad Program Assistant: Students graduating Spring 2017, please do not forget to submit a Graduation Checklist and Plan of Work (and Committee Form if you are a Thesis/PhD student) to me as soon as possible. You will also have to apply via OASIS as well as through the USF Commencement website if you will be attending the ceremony. If you were appointed a TA/RA and have not submitted a Tuition Waiver, please make sure you submit this as soon as possible. March 3rd by 5:00PM is the deadline to pay all fees. If you took the Qualifying Exams and passed Fall 2016, the deadline to submit a Candidacy form is April 26, 2017. John is now the Undergraduate Advisor for all undergraduate programs in the Department Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Information Technology. John is replacing Dr. William Hendrix. As many of you may know, John was a pre- Engineering advisor for Engineering Student Services for many years so John is experienced and we are very happy to have him upstairs with us now. John is in ENB 342B and can be reached at 813-974-6006. John has both walk-in hours and scheduling meetings through e- Scheduler (http://usfweb.usf.edu/escheduler/student.aspx). Unless otherwise announced, John s walk-in hours are: * Monday 9:00 AM to 11:00AM * Tuesday 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM * Wednesday 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM * Thursday 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM * Friday 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM The remaining hours in each day are for scheduled appointment through e-scheduler and can include Skype and telephone options. Program: The Data Incubator is an intensive 8 week fellowship that prepares masters students, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM and social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for Fellows and supported by sponsorships from hundreds of employers across multiple industries. In response to the overwhelming interest in our earlier sessions, we will be holding another fellowship. Who Should Apply: Anyone who has already obtained a masters or PhD degree or who is within one year of graduating with a masters or PhD is welcome to apply. Applications from international students are welcome. Everyone else is encouraged to sign-up for a future session. This is a full-time position in information technology management to help support, develop and improve the current infrastructure of the company operations and support business needs. As the Systems Administrator it is important to have knowledge of IT support skills and how to utilize online/software as a service solution to support CTI s IT needs. IEEE Computer Society Global Student Challenge Can Your Students Invent a Better World through Technology?

The IEEE Computer Society Global Student Challenge is an international challenge asking students to create a solution, based on the IEEE Computer Society 2022 Report, that will solve a real-world issue in a smart, fresh, and innovative way. Challenge Propose a solution to a real world-problem and exhibit your ingenuity. The winning submission may receive up to $1,500 and travel expenses to attend and be recognized publicly during the IEEE Computer Society Annual Awards Banquet in Phoenix, AZ, USA on 14 June 2017. To enter submit a PowerPoint presentation, a video or an Illustrated storyboard along with a supporting essay (maximum 1,000 words) on what technologies in the 2022 report are being utilized and why you think your solution will work. The ischool Inclusion Institute (i3) is an undergraduate research and leadership development program that prepares students from underrepresented populations for graduate study and careers in the information sciences. Only 25 students from across the country are selected each year to become i3 Scholars. Those students undertake a yearlong experience that includes two summer institutes hosted by the University of Pittsburgh School of Information Sciences and a research project spanning the year. Introductory Institute: June 11-July 7, 2017 Held on the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh Participate in special-topic workshops that highlight the many specialties and research areas in the information sciences Take part in professional development seminars led by industry and research experts that focus on graduate school applications, mentoring, résumé building, and networking

i3 Scholars explore the information sciences and graduate school opportunities while networking with professionals from across the country What are the Information Sciences? People. Information. Technology. The information sciences focus on helping people to discover better information, design and use better technology, and make better decisions to solve problems. Whether those problems are in business, medicine, education, the arts, or any number of other fields, information professionals are able to grapple with the challenges and opportunities of the digital age. i3 welcomes students from all majors and academic disciplines. The information sciences are incredibly diverse and interdisciplinary. With so many different specializations, students can find a program that meets their interests. Research Project Publications i3 Scholars work remotely to complete their yearlong research projects under the guidance of an advisor. Once they complete the program, i3 Scholars are encouraged to submit their projects for publication at academic conferences. 17 i3

projects have been published in conferences such as iconference, CSCW, and IEEE SeGAH (a sample of past projects is listed below). i3 Scholars receive travel funding to present their work at conferences.
