EY Darden Master Class Programme Entrepreneurship: Creating, Leading, Transforming 25 27 September 2017

Programme 25 September 10:30am 6:00pm 26 September 8:30am 6:00pm 27 September 8:30am 3:30 pm Alumni event (Auckland) 3:30pm 7:30pm Please confirm if you would like to join us. Entrepreneurship is a vital ingredient for creating, leading and transforming businesses. It is not just about small business or even about starting a new business. Rather, it addresses the process of new wealth creation through the creation of high-growth potential ventures or new venture units in evolving or renewing industries. Entrepreneurship is about applied business innovation : how to create new value not only through new products or services, but with novel technologies, business concepts, organising structures, transaction/financing mechanisms, distribution channels, and market segmentation. Why attend? In this 2.5 day program, you will be challenged to think about how you can create value and build a productive business organisation with commonly available resources (e.g. intelligence, insight, energy, initiative and personal relationships). Entrepreneurial thinking is also about developing a particular attitude and state of mind; an artful, insightful and innovative mentality rather than just administration. It is a way of perceiving and creating opportunity wherever it may be needed. In a world undergoing continuous change, the ability to think like an entrepreneur has become a core skill of the managerial mind, and entrepreneurial management the quintessence of good management practice. S. Venkataraman MasterCard Professor of Business Administration, Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Research UVA Darden School of Business Faculty An internationally renowned scholar and educator in the field of entrepreneurship, Venkat teaches courses in strategy, entrepreneurship and ethics. As a corporate planning executive in a major Indian firm, he was a part of a founding team that created and developed a highly successful new business venture. He consults with Fortune 500 firms and advises companies, universities and governments on strategy. He has been a speaker and adviser for the Entrepreneurial Forum, a program of the International Trade Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce aimed at promoting trade through entrepreneurship around the world. The Academy of Management, the largest professional body of management educators in the world, has recognised his ground breaking research by awarding him the inaugural IDEA award for Foundational Research in entrepreneurship. EY Darden Master Class Programme

Topics Where you can excel Through cases, class discussions and workshop style exercises, the program asks the following questions in 3 contexts: start-up; growth; and established organisation: 1. Develop an attitude, mindset, and skills that are crucial for becoming a creative leader What makes entrepreneurs entrepreneurial? Is there an entrepreneurial method? How can we learn it? What is entrepreneurial thinking and how is it different from managerial thinking? 2. Be ready to apply these skills and mind-set are applicable either in the context of starting a new unit in a large, established organisation or starting a totally new organisation 3. Learn to leverage the common resources we all possess including talent; intelligence, time, energy, relationships; rather than financial capital to conquer the vicious cycle all start-ups begin with: No product implies no customers No customers implies no revenues No revenues implies no cash for investment No investment implies no legitimacy or credibility No legitimacy implies no resources Where do good opportunities come from? No resources implies no product What decisions/actions are required to convert an idea to an opportunity and an opportunity to a growing venture? Participants What are the critical challenges in creating a new venture from scratch? What are the alternative sources of seed resources and capital? What are the central risks & uncertainties in entrepreneurship & what are some ways of managing them: economically, psychologically? What is failure and how do you separate the failure of the venture from the failure of the individual? How do you fail intelligently in a venture, but succeed in your career and life? What are the different ways of creating something new? What are the attributes of an entrepreneurial firm? What are the attributes of a supportive eco-system for entrepreneurship? This program is designed for executives, business owners, investors, managers and directors from all industries and organisations who want to increase opportunities for growth.
